In considering the matter of
further improving Yaquina bay
there is one point, and an import
ant one too, that should not be
OTerlooked. When it is consider
ed that Yaquina is the only sea
port on the Uregon coast witn a
railroad penetrating the interior,
which railroad with its connecting
line of steamships affords the only
competing rail and water route of
the state, it is all important that
this -competing line should be fos
tered and encouraged From the
present altitude of the secretary
of war it seems that he is either
unfamiliar with the situation here,
or else is rather disposed to foster
a monopoly than encourage com
petition. This is the real point in
the controversy, -
Unless Yaquina receives atten
tion the whole state will suiler.
The entrance to the ' Columbia
river having been rmtda accessible
for deep draught vessels through
the expenditure of government
funds, a single transportation
comDanv. ooeraline lines of
steamships via the Columbia river
from Portland to San Francisco
and other points, now practically
controls the com mere of the
state. It goes without say in
that the bet interests of the stata
wiii be secured by the building up
of competing transportation lines.
Sinee the Yaquina route was op
ened twelve years ago, CorvaUis
and Albany have been the best
grain markets in the state. A very
conservative estimate of the sur
plus grain grown in the counties
contiguous to this route would be
2,500,000 bushels annually and
at lesst four cents has been saved
on every bushel during each of the
past twelve years, or 1100,000. In
other words $1,200,000 have been
ad.ded.u.lo the profits of Benton,
Lann, I'gIk, L.ane ana Marion
cuptSeBTaring the past dozen
years,, and the laquina route is
entitled to all the credit for this
splendid "saving. Besides thiS, the
reduction on incoming freight has
amounted - to a large sum prob
ablv not less than $250,000. To
these sums should be added $200,
000 collected at the'port' of Ya
auina as duty on the steel rails
tieed in building the Oregon Pa
cific railroad, which would uever
have been built but for the assur
ance that Yaquina would be im
proved and eventually- made i
harbor for deep draught vessels.
The completion of the O. C..&
E. railroad to an eastern connec
tion depends upon the further im
'provament of the Yaquina bar.
With a railroad across the state as
eohiemplated by the original pro
moters of the road, a vast terri
tory, rich in agriculture, timber,
mineral and other resources would
opened up. In fact the future
(growth and development of the
(State depends largely upon the ex
tension of"the O. C. & E., and" the
extension of the O. C. & E. de
pends upon the completion of the
contemplated improvements at
Yaquina bay.

with one eye open so long as the
great, healthy pumpkin pies sit on
the shelf just inside the open
pantry window, and who can
blame him? We like to make
"half moons" in those kind of
pies ourself, anyway they .smack
of something good to eat.

- The jurymen supcened for the
November term of the circuit
court were discharged yesterday,
after fonr days attendance with
nothing to do. Judge Fullerton
remarked that thre was no jury
case in sight and no reason to
incur further expense. The
grand jury has listened to num
erous complaints, but has re
turned so far only one true bill
the case of Ed Scott. D. B.
Farley, of Wren, is forman of
the grand jury, and the other
members are J. D. Howell,
Marshall Allen, W. M. Children,
Chas. Blakeslee, John Coffee and

A Christian Gentleman.
In lhe death of Rev. Ezra C.
:Wyatt, Benton county has lost a
valuable citizen Mr. Wyatt was
thrown from his wagon recently,
while going from a quarterly meel
iug at Waterloo, Linn county, to
Plainview, where he was to preach
in the evening. His injuries were
fatal, and he never recovered con
sciousness. He died the second
night after he was. hurt. His fam
ily and two brothers were with
him and he received every atten
tion .-.and was given all the care
and medical aid that loving ones
eould summon, but the good Lord
siw- best to call him from his
earthly cares and place him on a
throne in heaven, where he is free
from all sorrow and pain. The
funeral sermon was preached ' by
Bishop H. L. Barkley, to a large
concourse of sorrowing relatives
and friends.
Ezra O. Wyatt was born in
Henderson county, Illinois, Octo
ber 26th, 1844, and with his par
ents crossed the plains to Oregon
in 1374. He died at the age ot
52 years, 11 months. He was con
verted at the early age of thirteen
years and ever after lived a chris
tian. He was called to the min
istry about 1 9 years ago. Most of
the time he has been Dresidinsr
elder in Oregon conference and at
one time was pastor of the Salem
church. He has preached over
the greater part of western Ore
gon. He was always found at the j
