CORVALLIS, OREGON. Aug. 27, 1897.
RAILROAD FOR MONROE.
With the development of the
fruit industry in the southern
portion of Benton county, a rail
road through that section is no
longer a mere possible conven
ience, it is an absolute neces
sity. Grain can be hauled long
distances to market, but fruit de
mands better shipping facilities.
A railroad from Corvallis to
Eugene would accommodate a
remarkably fertile section and
secure a large and profitable bus
iness. The distance is only
about 40 miles and the route is
along comparatively level ground
Two feasible propositions pre
sent themselves. The Southern
Pacific might be induced to ex
tend the westside line to Eugene.
or the O. C. & E. persuaded to
run a leeder to that city. Proper
organized effort on the part of
the people interested will hardly
fail in securing one of these
lines.
It is natural that the
should regard the O. C.
proposition with more
The citizens of Eugene,
people
& E.
favor,
espec-
lally, would rather encourage
competition to the Southern Pa
cific, but either line would
bring the farmers nearer the
market and sivc them better
prices for their products.
The Gazette - will refer to
this important matter again. It
is expected that an active cam-
paiTi will be commenced after
harvest.
A friend wishes to know why
the Gazette did not reply to the
charge made by the Oregonion,
that this paper "knowingly made
a false statement an intentional
ly false statement" Had the
Oregonion contented itself with
the expression "knowingly made
a false statement," it would have
been honored with a polite an
swer, but the " accusation of
"knowingly making an inten
tionally false statement," is too
serious for mere words. But it
might be said that the Oregon-
lan is altogether too sensitive,
X ne LtAzette did not say nor
did it insinuate that Editor Scott
owned stock in the Oregon Na
tional batik when it failed. It
was not deemed necessary to add
. the words' "which he did not"
to the expression "even did he
own stock. ' ' Of course any one
who has followed the pleasant
little tilt between Scott and
Thompson knows that the former
was in no manner interested in
the Oregon national bank at the
time of its collapse. The Ore
gonian cannot gather thistles
from figs. . -
For all the -criticism-, reason
able and unreasonable, directed
at the Oregon state fair, we
should remember that if the peo
ple of Oregon take the proper in
terest in the fair, the money
spent in maintaining it will be
by no means wasted. The fair
is great in possibilities for use
fulness, and the management
seems to possess the right spirit
The exhibition, this prosperous
fall, is " bound to attract many
thousand visitors.
As the farmer mops the sweat
from his brow and views with
satisfaction the grain quotations,
he feels that the populists have
made a slight mistake. It is not
wheat and silver that fall and
rise together, but wheat and
quicksilver. -

Congressman Tongue's Tour
Hon. Thomas H. Tongue, representa-
tiye from the first congressional district,
was in town Monday for a few Honrs, on
his way home from Coos bay. Some
time ago he was invited to deliver an ad
dress t Myrtle Point before the G. A. R.
encampment and accepted the invitation.
The trip to Myrtle Point is a long and
tiresome one, but he made it safely ana
delivered- the address last Thursday, as
agreed upon. The next day he inspected
the government works on the Coquelle
river and at Coos bay. Saturday he
came uo to Yaquina on the Truck.ee. re-
there, familiarizing himself
with the needs of the harbor, until Moo
day morning. Between now and the
convening of congress it is Mr. Toague's
intention to make a thorough inspection
of the river and harbors of the state and
make a careful study of the needs of Or
egon so far as national legislation is con
cerned. He says that the Willamette
river and Yaquina bay will receive his
especial attention. He will accompany
General Hooker, chairman of the com
mittee on rivers and harbors, over the
line of the O. C. & E., and hopes to get
something handsome doae for Yaquina i
at the coming session of congress.
Mr. Tongue says there is a wonderful
revival in trade throughout the east since
the Dingley bill went into effect; that
many manufacturing establishments,
which., have been idle for months, are
beginning to start up full handed and
that there is a tendency all along the
line to increase wages. He feels confi
dent that next year will witness one f
the greatest commercial eras in the his
tory of the country.

There's the rub! You can measure mountain height and ocean

.:But then do yoa need to test it? The World's Fair Committee

that Ayers was the only sarsaparilla admitted to the World's
