Editor and
Business Manager.
CORVALLIS, OREGON, May 7, 1S97.
Quit grumbling. Stop turn
ing up your nose at promised
prosperity. That is bad for the
nose and does not worry prosper
ity. But your grumbling does
delay the onward march of good
times. If you want to be mis
erable, no law of man or nature
can prevent it. But if you want
to, keep it to yourself. Don't
try to share something you have
and like to have with people who
do not want it. If you do," you
are a nuisance and ought to be
abated.
Some people would rather
have their own prophecies of
evil fulfilled than have other
men's predictions of good come
true. This country of ours has
been alive of late with "come
calamity" croakers, whose po
litical theories are proven false
by the return of prosperity.
They say they cannot see pros
perity. Of course they can't.
One can raise smoke enough to
hide the sun in the brightest
day. But the sun is not to
blame.
Prosperity is here. It is no
an idle fancy, but an actual con
dition. It will not make spend
thrifts rich nor make good busi
ness men out of poor managers.
It will not return that which
you have lost during the hard
times. It will not turn back
the hands of the clock. But it
will give you a profitable mark
et for your labor. It will give
you a chance to pay your debts
and earn a decent livelihood by
your industry.
Stop blaming the "lnouied
powers' ' for your poverty. Take
your Cleveland badges off the
vinegar keg at the grocery.
Keep your eyes open and . rustle.
Stop raising a smoke and you
will find the sun of prosperity
shining for all of us.
If Mr. Uren is correct, and he
ought to know, the Oregon pop
ulists who hold office are pecul
iar in their corruption practices.
He says that the populist mem
bers of the legislature received
from 3Uo to $80 apiece from the
'enemies of Mitchell," (i. e.
Corbett) when Mitchell offered
them from $2,000 to $5,000. As
the fact that they took bribes at
all, precludes them from claim
ine: auy consideration of honor,
it is evident that they were idir
ots in not taking the larg
amounts or that they lie in
claiming that the larger amounts
were offered.
A locally-published leaflet, en
titled "The New Dispensation,"
has been distributed. It is to
appear monthly. It's purpose
can not be learned by perusing
it and the writer, indeed, disa
vows any desire to lead or in
struct. It breathes heavily of
Dooulism " and discontent and
seems to assert that human deni
.zens of this earth are undergoing
some mvstenous chanee in
thoughts and actions. . It is a
sort of "saw-an-airship" affair
The taritt bill . has been re
ported b' the senate committee,
Senator Jones voting with the
republican members. The vote
to report stood 5 to 4. The bill
will be called iip May 18th.
The committee hvjs made some
charge, but the bill, as it will
be returned to the house, will
not differ so radically from the
original measure as newspapers
with free-trade tendencies would
have us believe.
Mr. Hanna is evidently an
unusually liberal man, as well
as a prodigiously wealthy one.
He has now, according to the
democratic papers of the state,
bought the populist party in Or
egon and induced it to declare
against future fusion. His ex
cessive liberality is shown in the
fact that he did not buy up the
smaller faction of the fusion-
ists.
The earlier that Secretary of
State Kincaid discovers that he
is not the attorney general, the
legislature, nor the supreme
court, ths better it will be for
"himself and the people of the
state. He is certainly not gain
ing public approval by magnify
ing his official prerogatives. -
Henry Corbett, in his attempt
to be senator from W. P. Lord,
presents the world with an un
dignified spectacle. His cause is
as hopeless as it is unrighteous
and costly.
The "Sick Man of Europe"
is evidently not bed-ridden.

PHILOMATH PUBLIC SCHOOL.
The Philomath public school
closed last S iturday with a very
appropriate and entertaining liter
ary program, which was highly ap
preciated by the large and intelli
cent audience which was present.
After the literary program had
been completed, a number of

winners, as follows: or highest

dred enrolled durins the eight

ty. The year has been excep
tionallv quiet and satisfactory to

desired, all the pupils having
done exceptionally well.

The Ins and Outs of It.
It you get best wear out of a coat, best work must
h?ve gone into it. You can't get good . bread ' out of
poor flour. Sl - -
Moral : You can't get the best out of anything, unless
the best is in it ; and the best has' to be put in before it
can be taken out. Now, we have a rule to test those
sarsaparillas with a big "best" on the bottle. "Tell us
what's put in you and we'll decide for ourselves about
the best." That's- fair. But these modest sarsaparillas
say: "Oh! Ava' can't toll. It's a secret. ; Have faith in
the label." . .'. . Stop ! There's one exception ; one sar
saparilla that has no secret to hide. It's Ayer's. If you
want to know what goes into Ayer's Sarsaparilla, ask
your doctor to write for the formula. Then you can
satisfy yourself that you get the best of the sarsaparilla
argument when you get Ayer's.
