Juniatta Co., Fa., says his wife is subject

Supreme-Judge-Elect Wolverton attended
court in this city this week, and also re
ceived congratulations from his many
friends.
Bev. P. W. Donwood, a noted Baptist
minister, will preach in the parlors of the
hotel Corvallis Sunday morning at 11
o'clock.
"It" Saunders, who has been in the county
jail pending an examination be for the grand
jury on a charge of burglary, has been re
leased on bail.

The Masonic grand lodge and the grand
chapter U. E. S. which were to have met
iu Portland next Monday, have postponed

A contract has been let by the county
eourt to J. B. Tellotson for $100 for the
erection of a bridge across the Albany road
near the residence of Dan Bain water.
Two new Presbyterian churches have re-
jcently been built iu Lin county. Dr.
Thompson baa been invited to preach the
sermon at the opening of both of these
churches.
H. V. Gatet, formerly superintendent of
the O. P., residing in this city, was elected
to represeut Washington county in the leg
islature, on the republican ticket. His
friends congratulate.
They say that the water is so high in Port
land that the poor people can't afford to use
it. Although this may be true, Spencer &
Case are still doing all kinds of tonsorial
work at popular prices.
Miss Zella . Woods, sister of Arthur
Woods, now a student of the O. A. C, who
hx been attending school in California,
returned home to Allmny, in company with
her mother on last Tuesday's O. P. train.
Miss Gnssie Turney, one of the popular
young lady teachers of the Corvallis public
whools, was last wek presented by her pu
pils with a beautiful gold chain, which she
highly prizes as an evidence of true friend
ship. Miss Ada Sharpies has returned to her
home in Eugene for. the summer. During
the past uiue mouths she has been engaged
iu teaching 'one of the departments of the
public school, and was very successful with
her work.
The celebrated White Sewing Machine
Co. has established an agency for Benton
county, at the Ladies' Bazaar, and the first
invoice of machines was uuloaded there
this week. Those in need of a first class
machine take notice.
Mrs. J. W. Moore, of The Dalles, is visit
ing her daughtes Mrs. S. N. Wilkins. Mrs.
Moore and her daughter Mrs. Vineyard
Brock, who resides at Sherman, Eastern
Oregou, are detained here on account of the
high water on the Columbia.
At a business meeting of the local Y. P.
S. C. E. union, the following officers were
elected for the ensuing 9 ear: President, M.
R. Johnson; vice president, Addie Bristow;
sec., Gussie Casto; cor. sec , Nellie David
son; treasurer, Milton Stemler.
There will be a special meeting of Cor
vallis Grange, No. 242, P. of H., next Sat
nrday, Jnne 9th, at 10 a.m.. for the pur
pose of conferring degrees. The fourth de
gree will be exemplified and a full attend
ance is desired. Mosbs Craig, Master.
Mr. C. H. Gleim spent Sunday and Mon
day with his family in Portland. He sayn
that seven-eights of the business there is
suspeBded and the loss to merchants, trans
portation lines and loss of business by rea
son of the flood will aggregate many mil
lions of dollars.
Children's Day will be observed by the
Congregational church and Sunday school on
Sunday. Special sermon in the morning.
At 7:30 a series of excercises will be render
ed by the children. The junior endeavors
will also take part; giving sal ate and drilL

The result of last Monday's election was
a victory for the Tammany hall ticket, and
Spencer & Case, in consequence, have hard
ly been themselves since the result was
learned. This, however, has not deterred
them from shaving their customers' in the
most careful and easy manner.
The young ladies' republican club, 13 in
number, accompanied by their young re
publican gentleman friends, were out last
evening to pay their respects to the G. 0.
P. candidates. At the residence of Judge
Elect Hufford the serenadcrs were iuvited
in and served with a sumptuous lunch.
Mrs. M. A. Nelms (nee Johnson) is visit
ing at the residence of her parents in this
city, She will not return to her home in
Walla Walla until regular rail communica
tion is again resumed over the Union Pacific
which, owing to the high water on the
Columbia has been entirely suspended.
A boon has been discovered for bald

A land office business was done in divorces
this week by the circuit court. Altogether
three was granted, and in each instance the
wife appeared in the complaint as plaintiff.
The suits were as follows: Eliza Jennings
vs. Wm; F. Jennings; Bhoda Haley vs.
James H. Haley, and Carrie Case vs. E. R.
Case.
A horse belonging to the Irish -Burleigh
outfit who have been camped on the flat
nbove town, became scared the other day
and attempted to run away. In doing so
the horse struck its head against a project
ing timber which, owing to the speed at
tained, crushed its skull frnm the effects of
which death was instantaneous.
A special train will leave here at 7 o'clock
this evening to accomodate those who de
sire to participate in the grand republican
ratification and torchlight procescion that
occurs in Albany tonight. Round trip tick
ets have been placed at 50 cents. Several
hundred intend takiug advantage of this op
portunity. The train will return at 10:30.
Everybody should go.
Next Sabbath is children's day at the
Presbyterian church. The exercises in the
morning will connsist of music, songs, rec
itations and an exercise prepared especially
foi the occasion. There will also be the
baptism of children at this service. Iu the
evening at 7:45 the young people of the
Christian endeavor society take charge of
the service and have pre.pared an excellent
program for the occassiou. All invited.
The teachers of the Corvallis pub'ic
school were pleasantly entertaiued Wed
nesday evening at the residence of Mr. and
Mrs. F. M. Johnson. Recitations, music
and conversation were the order until 10:30
when a dainty lunch was served. Those
present were Miss Leon Louis, Miss Gussie
Turney, Miss Maude Brenueni.m, Miss
Mollie Bergin, Miss Newton, Miss Casto,
Mrs. M. A. Reims, Mr. S. I. Pratt and
Mr. and Mrs. F. M. Johnson.
