Dr. Allen Griffiths, Pacific coast lecturer on

ing in authority, hearsay or because of

accepting or rt-jectiuK anything.' This atti
tude yields largest returns in newly discov
ered tiulh and prevents mental slavt-ryt
' The theosnphical society was organized
in New York city in 1875 by 11. P. Blavots
ky, Col. H. S. Olcott and Win. Q. Judge,
and has three objects: First, to form the
nucleus of a universal brotherhood of hu
manity w.thiiut distinction of race, creed,
sex or color; second, to promote the study
of oriental literatures, religions and teiences
and demonstrate the importance of that
stuly; third, to investigate unexplained
laws of nature and latent powers in man.
The society is a body of studemts entirely
unsectarian, and its members are tamest
men and women of all beliefs and nationali
ties. It is legally chartered under United
St ttes and state laws. The supreme court
of Missouri in granting a charter stated
that the theosophical society was equally en
titled to legal recognition with any othir
body since its objects tended to the moral
and educational elevation of any community.
Such eminent scieutistd as Prof. Crooks, F.
R. S. of England, E. Flamarion, the French
astronomer, Prof. James of Harvard col
lege, Thomas Kdison, the electrician and
scholars in literary and scientific circles and
in all departments of human thought, are
members of the society. Bnrnouf, the great
orientalist, says the theosophical society is
one of the three principal factors of en
lightenment and progress of this age. The
osophy has existed in all ages. In the past
and now it is the pure transmitted wisdom
originally imparted to infant humanity by
adepts of other hiid previous humanities.
From it sprang nil religious and philoso
phies of all times and peoples, the only dif
ference between them being changes and
misinterpretations of basic truths of man,
natuia and deity, made by priestcraft of
past ami theologians of present times.
Study will demonstrate this fact. In our
time theosophy was heralded by Mtne. H.
f. Blavatsky, who claimed to bear a mes
sage from a high order of adepts that have
always nxisted in the east, and are custodi
ans of v.ist stores of wisdom as the result
of study, investigation mid past experience
extending over ages. This message pro
claimed the common origin, age, develop
ment and destiny of all men, reincarnation
and Karma, and shed light upon many
problems hitherto ignored, denied or as
cribed to the unknowable, an inscrutable
power, or that apothesis of weakness, a
'special pn-vidence.' Mine. Blavatsky's
claim for the existence of and association
with this or.b;r of adepts (great souls,) was
sulst.ii'tiated by possession of vast knowl
edge contained in her hooks ' Isis Unveiled '
and the ' Secret Doctrine,' not found else
where. These adepts, M;.halinas, are but
more advanced men, who by special training
and insight into nature's finer forces, are
able to in'iMluur what appears miraculous to
the ignorant, but which is the ellect of nat
ural law. They are imbued with altruism
aud a desire to assist the race progress, and
do so in the nl true way by imparting at
favorable times greater knowledge, thus
helping mm keup himself. Auy other
course could but produce a race of weak
lings. Man must exert himself to progress.
To carry him would not effect that end.
Cycies of activity aud inactivity sway
over man aud naturs. The last quarter of
each century is a period ot activity. It is
the world's spring time. We are in the last
quarter of our century. Great enterprises
on all lines are begun and consumated witb
amazint; rapidity. These opportunities will
greatly lessen at the close of the century.
Adepts utilize thexe favorable times by giv
ing out more knowledge, sounding the key
notes of iner forces and leaving man to
w rk out and test them by individual expe
rience. Some of the knowledge first given
out by Mme. Blavatsky was ridiculed, but
since has been demonstrated by scientists as
tt ne. New truths usually share this fate at
fi st; but being truths, Inter are accepted.
j Theosophical literature is replete with
knowledge not found elsewhere. Advanced
scientists are delving in its archives and
there discovering solutions to problem .else
where and otherwise unsolvable. Theoso
phy applies to every conceivable racial and
; individual condition, and appeals to think-
esand students who are dissatisfied with
current conceptions of man's origin, age,
development and possible destiny, and
search for more light thereon. The condi
tions for attainment of real progress aud
true happiness are: right motive, right
knowledge, right action. With these, fail
ure is impossible; with less, success can be
but partial. The individual' has to snpply
moti?e and action; theosophy is the right
knowledge and lifts man from the plane of
'dumb, driven cattle, to that of master
and weaver of his own destiny. Man also
has his periods of activity and rest, minor
terms of which are the days and nights of

lives and deaths or' interims between each
life, which are the days and sights of the

higher ego, the spirit, the thinker of man,
is eternal both as to future and to past,
though the personalities, as earth lives are
called, are only transient expression's of the
thinker. , The thinker, likeyan actor, plays
many parts, and each earth life is a part.
In the last life the thinker may have as
sumed the soul of Smith, Jones, in this, and
Brown in the next; but the individuality
remains always the Same. The three chai
actersa are but three different parts, all er
acted in the drama of changing life for pur
poses of further development of the one and
only true man, the thinker. There is no
retrogression, but always progress. The
soul of man on death of the body never en
ters the anim.il or any lower kingdom of
nature'. It has long since evolved up
through them. On death of the body the
wisdom evolved during the life just closed
is added to the vast store acquired in all
past lives, so that the succeeding life will be
au advance upon its predecessor. Karma,
the law of cause and effect governing human
thought and action, connects all the earth
lives of each thinker iu an unbroken series,
as an individual thought and acted in past
lives he is now happy or unhappy, for
thought aud action of other lives were
causes whose corresponding effects now ope
rate. Man has thus made himself, and is
now making his future by deeds of the
present. Karma and reincarnation thus ra
tionally and justly accouuts for the appar
ently unjust suffering of many, and the
seemingly unmerited happiness of others.
The former, violated law in past lives and
now suffer; the latter conformed to law
then and arc now happy. There is no es
cape from consequences of thought aud ac
tion, good or bad. Man receives his just
merit of happiness or mode of uubappiuess,
to the last ioti. It is an inexorable law.
Thus, it is perceived that vicarious atone
ment as commonly taught, is a fallacy un
substantiated by kuowu laws or the analo
gies of nature, all of which prove the con
trary. Man can not reasonably blame an
gels, gods, men or devils for his own condi
tion; expect them to relieve him of distress,
or do for him what he can and should do for
himself. If ever man is Christ, it is the
higher ego, the deitic spark, the thiuker.
When man yields to his lower nature, he
crucifies the Christ within himself; when he
rises to the promptings of the higher he hv
comes one with his 4 Father in Heaven,' as
Jesus said. While man cannot escape ef
feets of past misdeeds but must pay to the
last farthing, yet knowledge that he brought
it upon himself by violation of law, gives
him fortitude to bear it. Furthermore, it
causes him to leurn and obey law now, aud
thus avoid repetition of present suffering in
future earth lives. This is the supremacy
of theosophy: That it throws light upon all
problems by placing Hie truth before all
men; imparting laws that govern all alike,
and that the only way to attain real progress
and true happiness is to help others by im
parting that knowledge to them, and thus
heip them help themselves. Theosophical
literaturo is a storehouse of knowledge to
which all students and thinkers are referred
who desire to attain it."
Speaker Crisp announced the
standing committees on Monday.
It is said that no one was prepared
lor the radical changes made in
the personnel of some of the com
mittees. Ilolman, of Indiana, the
venerable watch-dog of the
treasury," is deposed from the
committee on appropriations and
is given the head ot thecommittee
on Indian affairs. The removal of
Ilolman from the head of the com
mittee on appropriations is inter
prfted by some to mean that the
speaker favors more liberal appro
priations in the Filly-third con
gress. Wilson, of West Virginia,
succeeds Springer, of Illinois, as
ch livman of the ways aud means
commiltee, and the former gets
the chairmanship of the committee
on banking and currency. Refer

Lieutenant Charles E. Nelson of
Company A, first regiment O. N. G.
who was shot in the back in the
sham battle at Camp Compson
last Saturday afternoon died at
Good Samaritan hospital Suuday
afternoon. The wound was at
first deemed unimportant, but it
rapidly became serious. It was
found after death that the wad
from a blank catridge had hit Nel
son in the small of the back with
sufficient force to fracture two
bones of the vertebrae and make an
opening in the abdominal cavity,
into which much blood escaped.
He was an unmarried man, 25
years of age, and very popular iu
Portland society.
