the government has been induced
to sound odicial and liuaucial sen
linient in this country relative to
such a proposition by a number of
circumstances, and chief among
these is the rapid withdrawal of

a id other sources of supply and
its shipment, to the United States.
Secietary Greshain, of the state
department, needs $100,000 to
pay the expenses of his office. A
good part of this deficit is due to
the expense incurred in the enter
tainment ot foreign visitors, nola-
i bly the Duke of Veragua. While
the duke was in Chicago being
luxuriantly provided for. he wrote
to the president expressing his re
gret that he would be delayed in
reaching Washington to pay his
respects to the chief executive,
lie was informed in reply that the
president would release him from
any obligation he might feel ii
that direction. lie was further
advised that arrangements had
been made for Ids return to Spain.
Oi course the duke was left to fix
the date himself, but there was no
mistaking the anxiety of the de
partment to have his visit come to
an early end. The expense of the
entertainment of the duke will not

tion the entertainment by private

peal of the Sherman law, but says
the tariff must not be disturbed;
for the present, lie knows that
any meddling with the tariff will
be disastrous, but has not Ihe
c -urage to say so. The way he
p its it leaves the friends of Ihe
trade to hope for ''tariff reform,"
while the manufacturers can re
main with this uncertainty, with
the machinery idle and the future
in doubt. Either revise the -tariff
at once or say it shall aot .be dis
turbed for three years, and the
business of the country will re
vive. The repeal of 1he Sherman
law with tariff legislation in doubt
will not revive business and cause
factories to resume operations.
