Jerry Simpson has come out for

tle chance poor Springer had in
the race.
It is hard to reconcile the oft re
peated statement in the democrat
ic newspapers of bitter enmity ex
isting between the President and
J. S. Clarkson and the fact that
Mr. Clarkson was recently a guest
for several days at the President
ial cottage at Cape May Point.
H. Seton Karr, a member of
the English parliament, has been
investigating the Harney Peak
Tin Mining Company, and he
found the outlook so favorable that
he made the prediction that the
United States would soon be ship
ping, tin to England. Tin's is ter
rible news for those who are op
posed to American industry.
Ex-Representative Kelly, of
Kansas, who is charged with hav-ifig-left
the republican party to become-
a- member of the People's
party for the purpose of getting
the geat now so ably filled in the
United States Senate by Preston
B. Plumb, will not only have to
wait a long while, but he will have
to do lots of growing, before he
can fill tlie seat.
The world is getting upside
down. Ex-Senator Ingalls has
been most cordially received in
the South, where he has been lec
turing; and the- fire-eating news
papers which have for years repre
sented him as a sort of nineteenth
century political Mephisto, ever
ready to devour the Southern
Gretchen, received his lectures
with the most fulsome praise,
several of them declaring, in the
flowery language peculiar to the
editorial columns of that section,
that he was the ablest orator of
the age:
The alleged friendship between
Governor Hill and Mr. Cleveland
does not' prevent the friends of
these gentlemen from rapping
each other over the head just as
often as a chance occurs, and there
aTe reasons for the belief that each
of the gentlemen named has in his
possession a large and keen knife
which he proposes to use upon the
other next year, if it becomes
necessary. The knowledge of
these facts is the foundation of the
Gorman boom; his friends calcu
late that Cleveland and' Hill have
killed each other's opportunities
and that both sides will support
Gorman. But will they?
The English newspapers are full
of wails because of the trade lost
to that country and gained to the
United States through the McKin
ley. tariff law, but the democratic
newspapers of this country still
persist in their absurd efforts to
convince people against the evi
dence of their owTt eyes, that the
law is injuring the United States.
Prosperity was ever the poison of
the democratic party, and for that
reason - its newspapers oppose
everything calculated to make this
country more prosperous. On the
contrary" the republican party has
ever thrived on prosperity ancVftas
every reason- for believing that the
present wave of prosperity will in
1892 put it again in control of all
Branches of the government.
INVEST NOW.
The Northwestern Financier
gives a little timely advice in the
following:
Now is the time to invest in the
west. In twenty years active ex
perience in the investment busi
ness we have never seen better
opportunities for safe and profit
able investment in Western secu
rities than are to be had at this
time. There is no inflation of
values. Real estate valueations
are now on a conservative basis
much more so than for two or
three years prior to 1891. The
present good crops all over the
west are sure to improve prices
and create more demand for real
estate. The depression has culmi
nated. We do not look for any
rapid recovery, but firmer prices.
There will be less property offered
for sale and more buyers. Farm
ers who are unable to meet pay
ments will be able to sell their
farms. At the present time,
when all speculation and inflation
are eliminated, there is absolutely
no excuse for accepting insuffici
ent securities. The investor buy
ing securities now from any of the
leading and well-known reliable
investment companies takes less
risk than at any previous time
during the past five years.
The demand for money is good,
and by a class of borrowers who
want money, not for speculative
purposes, but for legitimate im
provements, and who have the
ability to pay interest and princi
pal. Many good school, and other
municipal bonds, are being offered
throughout the Northwest, which
are sate as Government bonds.
The laws are stringent governing
these issues, and only a limited
amount are authorized by, law.
No instance of default in this class
of securities in the Northwest has
come to our knowledge.
The Financier will take pleasure
in answering any inquiries on this
subject, and give more definite in
formation to any one interested,
or refer to reliable parties who will
do so.

OREGON WEATHER REPORT.
FOR WESTERN OREGON, FOR WEEK ENDING
SATURDAY, AUGUST 22. 1891.
Rain fell on the night of the
17th and on the 18th, throughout
this section in amount of from .10
to .20 of an inch except in Jose
phine and Jackson counties where
only a few drops fell. The tem
perature was below the average
in tha fore part of the week, but
rose rapidly towards the close un
til to-day when it was from 90 to
100 degrees, except along the
coast.
CROPS.
The rain did no damage to the
grain, but delayed harvesting and
threshing for one daj There was
some slight benefit in the rain to
corn and vegetables. Winter
wheat is all cut and most of it
threshed; spring grain i3 being cut.
Some smut exists in Douglas and
Jackson counties. " Grain is yield
ing better than was expected in
every county; 56 bushels per acre
from a 16 acre field is reported
from Yamhill county; in Polk
county the wheat generally aver
aged over 30 bushels per acre;
most counties have an average
yield of from 25 to 35 bushels per
acre. The wooly aphis is doing
damage to orchards in Yamhill
county. The onion crop was in
jured by lice in Washington coun
ty, but as the acreage was increas
ed the total crop will be above the
average. Hop growers expect to
gather a very fair average crop. In J
Douglas, Jackson and Curry coun
ties the first crop of figs are over
and the second crop is now setting.
The early peaches are about over
and the second crop will be ripe
next week, several car loads a day
are being shipped from Jaekson
county. Josephine county is ship
ping three car loads a day of wat
ermelons. Fruit frying is in pro-
i;it.-ss.
Generally speaking it would
make little, if any, difference to
the average republican or to the
party at large whether Wilkinson
Call be recognized as a senator
from Florida for the six years be
ginning with the 4th of March '91,
or whether it be some other demo
crat, but circumstances have given
Mr. Call's case an unusual interest
The governor of Florida has stated
that he proposes refusing to issue
a certificate to Mr. Call, taking
the ground that he was not legally
elected to the senate, although he
received a majority of the whole
number of votes cast at a joint ses
sion of the Florida legislature held
on the 26th of last May. Mr,
Call's election is claimed by him
under the federal statute of 1866
governing senatorial elections.
The hearing of this case by the
senate committee on elections, of
which Senator Hoar, an able con
stitutional lawyer, is chairman,
will be one of the interesting
events of the next session of Con
gress, and its decision will doubt
less serve as a precedent in settling
future disputes of a similar nature.
