ABSOLUTE! PURE
The Lady Who Fished.
She was full of cunning crinkles, little tricks,
and wily wrinkles, to catch crabs and
periwinkles in the waters of the bay.
She knew all the leading jobbers in fish tackle,
reels, and bobbers, and she always
caug-bt the robbers that would steal her
bait away.
She could see without her glasses how to catch
the trout nd basses, and she gathered
in by musses victims of b r wily skill.
Only one thing was the matler; she could flsh
but couldn't flatter; and that made the
young men scatter; she could never fill
the bill.
Railway Advocate.
A Dade's Modus Operandi.
"It is not the thinsr for a young man
.who wishes to cut a figure with his em
ployers to lire in a boardinr-house, but
it is the cheapest way of getting along,
if you know how to work the racket,"
aid a brokers clerk last evening.
He explained that he expected to get
into "society" and marry an actress.
His capital consisted of a good address
and cheek.
"Appearances count for everything,"
he said. "The young man who plead
ed poverty will meet with little favor,
. while the man who keeps up a show of
prosperity and has plenty of 'go1 will
find friends. My salary is only $1,200
ji year, yet people think my income five
times that amount, consequently I am
sought after. The great scheme is to
make an impression. I live where
there are no other boarders and have a
small bedroom. The family do not
know their neighbors and no one
knows of my economy there. I invite
no one to call on me. Every evening
when not otherwise engaged I go in
evening dress. Now, this helps won
derfully. I. can saunter about the
big hotels for an hour or so at an ex
pense of a quarter. The chances are
that I will meet my employers. They
will keep a sharp lookout for some
time on my accounts; and, finding them
all correct, come to the conclusion that
I have means of my own. Bv and by I
am invited to dinner and i get ac
quainted with the ladies of the family.
"My promotion to an important position
follows, Then, again, I make friends
with rich young fellows about town.
This costs little and often leads to
great things. The fact that I dress
well and spend nothing makes them
think I am rich. Then, again, it is a
jrood thi.og to be seen riding in a
-oupe occasionally. This should be
.done when one is sure that he will be
observed by people of account. Dine
conspicuously at first-class restaurants
at least -once a month. Above all,
never be familiar with menials; hold
tip your head, and even if it be your
last dollar in the world, don't hesitate
to let it go for the sake of appearances."
.Aw York I'dcgram.
'Young man," he said, solemnly,
"do you know we are liable to be
called at any time?" "Yes, sir," re
sponded the young man, "we are liable
to, of course; but I made three men lay
down on a pair of deuces last night."

U. S. Gov't Report, Aug. 17, 1889.
Paralyzed at the Throttle.
"These fast trains have played the
mischief with engineers," said a rail
road man yesterday. "It is a fact that
almost daily you hear of one of these
royal knights of the Jever suffering
from a paralytic stroke. The rapid
time made puts every engineer on such
a strain that it is only a question of a
few months until the nervous system
collapses. I remember seeing the
statement sometime ago, and I do not
doubt its truth, that there is a train
running from St. Paul to Stillwater, on
the Omaha, that is called the hospital
train, for every man who runs with it
has either had a stroke of paralysis or
has been injured in some way or an
other. But in this day and age, when
everything goes at lightning speed, on
railroads and in business alike, I sup
pose little heed is given to these poor
fellows who drop by the wayside, in
reality victims of the greed of their
fcllow-jnen. " Chicago 2 ribune.
Fancy Cook: Books.
Some young ladies who have at
tended cooking schools during the
winter have collections of their favor
ite receipts. The little books, made by
their own hands and illustrated in
water color, are quite unique. The
cover of one has a picture of still life,
apples, nuts, raisins, and a glass of
wine, while another has the portrait of
a dainty cook, with sleeves rolled above
the dimpled elbows and tumbled curls
peeping out from beneath a lace-frilled
cap. In one book the picture that il
lustrates salads is a lobster and lettuce
leaves beside a pot of mustard and a
bottle of pepper, with a teaspoon lying
near filled with salt. Slices of lemon
and curled lettuce leaves form a bor
der, in and out of which receipts are
written in rhyme. The picture of a
salmon in another book is a genuine
work of art. Curious little designs ac
company each receipt, and the pretty
affair shows so much skill one naturally
wonders if the same hands can produce
a real appetizing dish of escalloped
oysters or an old-fashioned apple pie.
Mrs. Blunt I can't abide that Smith !
woman; I believe I actually hate her. j
Mr. Goode But, my dear Mrs. Blunt,
you ought not to feci so. Doesn't the
Bible tell us to love our enemies? 'O,
yes, it is all very well to say love your
enemies; but how can one love them
when one's enemies happen to be one's
dearest friends." Boston Transcript.
Moses Meyers, of Athens, Ga., has
received a novel gift from over the
seas. The gift consisted of about six
ounces of white sand in a linen bag,
and was sent all the way from Pales
tine. It is said to be the belief of cer
tain Hebrews that this sand, if placed
under the head of a corpse insures the
return of the spirit to Jerusalem.

HOW A SPIDER SNARES ITS PREY.
Trapping Its Game In a Scientific Manner
Preserving Fresh Meat.
Having an old fern case, with sides
and top all glass, we filled the bottom
with earth, niacins: a few sticks firmly
in the soil, so that the spiders would
have some projections to secure their
webs to. The first spider we placed in
the case was a very nne specimen,
marked on the top of the abdomen.
We took her from an old laurel tree in
which there were several young ones.
The first day she remained crawling
about on the ground; but on looking
next morning we found a penecc weo,
epun horizontallv across the case,
about half way up; and on magnifying
the ends of the web that were fastened
to the glass which was very smooth
we discovered the spider had frayed
out the ends of the weblines, and had
fastened them to the glass by means of
a gummy substance, thus giving it a
greater power of adhesion than' by
trusting to a single cord. We placed
a small house-fly in the case, where it
soon became entangled in the web, the
spider immediately rushing down, seiz
ing and killing it. ihe then carried it
to the top of the glass, and in four
minutes had sucked all the moisture
out of it. She then wrapped it loosely
round with web, leaving only one line
to it, by which she carefully lowered it
for about two inches through a space
in the net; then, cutting the line with
her hind feet, she let it fall to the
ground.
After this we placed four flies in the
case, three of which were speedily
caught The spider having evidently
eaten enough, she disposed of these
flies in a different manner from the
first. Running to each in turn, she
turned the fly rapidly round and round
with her front legs; at the same time
two distinct webs kept winding: round
the fly from the spinnerets, until it was
incased in such a bag of web that the
fly could not be seen. She then hung
them in different parts of the web. eat
ing two of them the same night.
Thinking the flies so wrapped up
would be air-tight, we detached one
from the web, leaving it exposed to the
air for three days. Although the
weather was very hot we found on
carefully opening the case that the
dead fly was quite fresh, and, when
smashed between the fingers, was in a
perfectly juicy condition. This clearly
shows their wonderful instinct in pre
serving food for future meals.
One day we placed in the case a
large meat fly, which immediately flew
through the web, tearing it in a de
structive manner. The spider at once
came down and repaired it, and in a
few minutes the fly was once more in
the web, struggling hard. This time
the spider came within about half an
inch of the fly, made a strong cord fast
to three of the outside lines of the net,
and then running quickly over the
back of the fly she made the cord fast
on the other side. On this cord we
noticed tiny beads hanging, of a clear
looking substance, which, as the fly
struggled, adhered to its wings, im
peding its movements. Leaving the
fly for nearly two miuutes, by which
time he was nearly exhausted, the
spider once more drew near, and
quickly had him by the back. Sway
iug her body from side to side, at the
same time she soon bound him with
three cords, which she guided about
over the fly with her hind feet in a
wonderfully rapid manner. She then
pierced him on the side of the .trunk,
from which place she did not again
loose until the fly was dead. Making
a slight repast, she bound the remains
securely iu the web for future meals.
