Adam Assefl has rented the build

burg's grocery store and is having it
fitted up piepartory to moving his res
taurant into- it. He will also run a

great circus-is in Oregon arranging a
tour of the state for the show. They
will give an exhibition in Corvallis
sometime during the month of Sep

George Eglin of the Willamette Val
ley and State Land and Loan Co., sold
160 acres of land off of Judge Kelsay's
farm between Corvallis and Albany,
this week, to Eugene Palmer, of Beuna
Vista.
H. F. Fisher of the Corvallis flour
iirg mills,-purchased, the first of this
week, 17,000 bushels of wheat at Beuna
Vista, delivered free on board of the
boat at 95 cents per bushel. This will
keep his mills running for a little
while. The first excursion of the season
from Albany to the bay will be given
next Sunday, the train will leave
Corvallis at 7:30 a, m., arriving at
Newport at 10" a. nr., returning it will
leave Newport at 7 p. m. arriving in
Corvallis at 9:30 p. m.
Last Saturday was a busy day in
Corvallis. Farmers from all sections
were in towff doing their trading, and
our streets presented a lively appear
ance, notwithstanding the fact that
many of our people- were out ef the
city: Business- in all lines is picking
up and the outlook for the fulure is
bright.
Mrs. S. J. Bryant accompanied by
Dr. Farra's mother ami neice, arrived
in Corvallis from New Market, Mis
souri, last Tuesday on a visit to rela
tives. Mrs. Bryant came to Corvallis
with her people in 1864 and returned'
to Missouri fiho following: year, where
she has since resided. She is the
daughter of James Hamilton;-

from Corvallis and- 250 from Albany
went on the excursion on the Oregon:
Pacific railroad to Lyons. The fea
ture of the day was a game of base
ball between1 the Coi-vallis and Albany
ibs,. in which the former club was
badly defeated. The score at the end
of the eighth inning stood 11 to 22 in
favor of Albany. Our boys say they
will do better next time.
The steamer Wm. M. Hoag passed
Corvallis on its way up the river last
Saturday shortly after 1 o'clock, hav
ing; on board about lot) excursionists
from Independence. After a lengthy
stop at Smith's grove about two miles
above bown the boat returned to Cor
vallis, where a stop of one hour was
made to give the party a chance to' see
our citv. As the steamer pulled out
from the wharf the- Corvallis band
gave them a parting send of which
was responded to by the Independence
band.
Improving-their Mill. Owing to
the increasing demand for their lam
ber, the Niagra Mill, on the Santi-
am, in which several Corvallis capital
ists are largely interested, it has become
necessary for the company to increase
the plant to nearly double its present
capacity. The company are putting a
100 horse power engine, with twin1
boilers in; the mill and making numer
ous other improvements.

Beat The Record. On the last"
trip up from San Francisco the steam
ship Willamette Valley beat the re
cord from San Francisco to Yaquina
City. The time consumed in1 making
the trip from dock to dock being just
48 hours. The steamer arrived at
Yaquina- in the evening and unloaded
her perishable freight during' the
night, and it arrived m Corvallis the
following morning in time to catch the
river boats for Portland and way
stations.
Very Low. Hon. T. E. Cauthorn
who went from1 here to California
about two months ago for the benefit
of his health, has returned to Portland,
having arrived" in5 that city on the.
Overland train last Tuesday. His
many friends here will regret to learn
that his health is in a very critical con
dition' and his recovery is- doubtful
At his request his father AV Cauthorn,
and children went? to Portland yester
day to attend his bedside. , Mr. Cau
thorti is one of the early settlers of
Benton County and is highly respected
by all who know him;

of a small box of large and delicious
strawberries frors the-' agricultural col
lege farm through the kindness of Prof.
H. T, French, last Wednesday, being
the first of .the-' season. Among the
numerous varities of strawberries grow
ing on the farm, the following eaily
varieties are ripe: ' Mitchers Early,
Haverland, Hampdon, May King,
Van Detuan, Pearl, Henderson,- aad
Jesse. The May King, Haverland
and Jesse are the varieties left at this
office and they axe considered to be the
bestr
Union Meeting; There was a
union meeting .of the Literary-Lyceum
and the "S". W. C. T. U. of this city,
last Tuesday evening at the residence
of Prof, and Mrs, .BerchtoW. The
programme that follows, which was
rendered during the evening, testifies
to the fact that whert wisdom and
charity combine there is strength irt
the combination. The following pro
gram , was1 ably carried ottt: Instru
mental solo, Miss Lucy Wiles; essay
a synopsis of Shakespeare's comedy,
"As you like it," Miss Diana Newton;,
vocal solo, Miss Carrie Hitchens es
say, Shakespear's plays. Miss Olive
Horning; vocal solo, Miss Kate How
ard; paper on W. Y. C. T. TJ. duties,
by Mis. Brown of Albany, read by
Miss Minnie Osborne; instrumental
solo, "Farewell to the Piano," Mrs. M
C. Berchtold; instrumental solo, Miss
Maud Hoffman. The above program
was well rendered in every respect and
much appreciated by those present,

We Celebrate. Itbegintfto look
as if Corvallis will be "in it" on the"
4th of July, A meeting of the citizens
was held in the court house last Tues
day evening and it was decided that
Corvallis should be patriotic this year
and celebrate the 4ttt in a manner ap
propriate for the occasion. J udge W.
S. Hufford was elected chairman of
the meeting and Sol Stock secretary.
After some discussion as to" the plans
of celebrating the following general
committee was appointed with power
to appoint sub committees: Sol Stock
B: R. Job, J. C. Taylor, S. L. Klino
and Mayor Burnett. The sub com
mittees will b appointed at once and
they will endeavor to get up a lively
celebration and make things hum gen
erally. Let our business men sub
scribe liberally to the sum when called
upon.
Seeking Volunteers. Frederick
A. Tripp, 2nd lieutenant 1st infantry,
of Angel Island, California, in company
with three other soldiers of the regular
army, arrived in Corvallis last Friday
and have established an office' in L. G.
Kline's brick. They are seeking
volunteer recruits for Uncle Sam's
army. They came overland and' their
first stop- was at Corvallis, wheie up to
date' they have succeeded in enlisting
only one' volunteer, although there has
been' several applicants. Monday
they go to Independence, visiting all
the- West Side towns- as far as Port
land, where they will be joined by a
detachment who are doing the East
Side towns.
Not the Right Man. Last Tiies
day Sheriff Mackay received a telegram
from She' marshal at- Albany to the ef
fect that the burglar supposed to have
recently robbed Nolan's safe had been
captured near that city. In response
he in company with John Strafford
atid Pete Callahan went over to Albany,-
but an examination" of the stolen
goods in possession of the prisoner
failed to furnish- any clue or evidence
by which he could be identified' with
the robbery here. The officers have
sufficient proof, however, to identify
the man as having a hand in' other
safe roberies in the" valley.
Colt Show. On Saturday, June
I3th, a coif show will be held in Cor
vallis. The street parade will take
place at 2 o'clock. All farmers and
others- who own colts and" are in
terested in raising stock should be on
hand. Th3 parade will be divided into'
two divisions, draft and' driving horses.
Intending exhibitors are requested to
furnish a full descripti en and the names
and ages of their colts at as early
date as possible to Ralston Cox. Colts"
up to two' years will be admitted.
Social Session. The Social Ses
sion Company wa greeted with a'
large audience at JoW's-Theater las
Wednesday evening. The music by
the Starr oschestra was fine, especially
the cornet solo by Edward Nickersp.
The play was truly as the name of the
company suggems "a Social Session."
