; Matilda Moore of Greenfield Springs,
Col., Has killed three mountain lions,
ean ride as. well as any cowboy, and. is
an accomplished pianist, says the Phil
adelphia Inquirer. Her father took
her west four years ago from Boston to
save her life. She is now healthy and
nappy :
Tillie McCready of Mississippi de
termined nine years ago never to mar
ry a man who either smokes, drinks,
swears, chews,-or uses slang. She is
not married yet, and thinks of making
a compromise if she gets a chance.
Ethel Sanderson of Boston is the
daughter of a wealthy commission
man. She is highly educated and has
traveled in Europe, and is an accom
plished linguist and musician. She
can cook an eight-course dinner with
out aid, " and can keep house better
than her maiden aunt, who has done
nothing else for forty years. -
Marie Bullock ot London was en
gaged to a young man. He camd to
see her one night under the influence
of liquor. A row followed. He prom
ised to reform after marriage. She in
sisted that he reform before. He ob
jected. She dismissed him, and is now
the wife of a prosperous attorney.
Jane Detheridge of Kingston, Ja
maica, has refused thirty-seven offers of
marriage. Jane has $1,000,000 and is
. an orphan. She does not -think she
can afford a husband who cares only
for her money.
Martha Tullidge of Dakota is 19
years old. This year she plowed,
sowed, and reaped forty acres of land
and has sold 600 bushels of wheat. All
this was done without male assistance.
. Catharine Macey has 175- pairs of
woolen socks which she knitted with
her own hands in the . last ten years.
When she has two hundred she will
sell them for the benefit of an orphan
asylum.
Agnes Dcvereaux is to be married
Christmas day! She fell into the Mis
sissippi river . and was Tcscucd by ' a
young man with, a blonde mustache,
who took the liberty of doing so, al
though he had not the pleasure of her
acquaintance. He has $10,000 and she
hasn't 10 cents of her own.
Carlotta Banks of Sacremento saved
hor three young brothers from death
while the paternal mansion was on
lire. It is feared she will lose her eye

A Mad King's Strange Ways.
The Hamburger Correspondem pub
. lishes a description, purporting to come
from a "very reliable source," of tht
state of King Otto, of Bavaria. "Ir
appearance King Otto is robust. Hit
enormous beard, which he never .per
mits to be cut, extends down to hif
breast. His eyes generally gaze intc
vacancy, and he only rouses himsell
- sometimes when his old ' servant, Misf
Mary, who nursed him as a boy on hei
knees, approaches him. Then, in t
sonorous baritone voice, he calls out tc
her tearing him something, perhaps a
glass of beer, but when it arrives he
immediately throws it . away. Othei
persons he passes by as if he never saw
them. - - .
"Strict orders are given that no one
' shall bow to him, nor address a word
to' him during his walks'. Frequently
the unfortunate King, under the influ
ence of his hallucinations, stands in a
corner, violently gesticulating and
speaking ' of. imaginary personages.
After such an attack complete apathy
usually sets in, which lasts for hours.
His Majesty is a' passionate smoker,
-consuming twenty to thirty cigarettes
a day. The number of lucifer matches
be uses is enormous,' as he generally
lights a whole -box at once and . enjoys
throwing it s.wa!y while in flames.
"His manner of life is regulated witb
strict care, his diet being lixed by the
Ehysician on service. Dr. Sncll and
r. Kanke take a month's duty alter
nately, and every Sunday a visit is paid
by the Director of the district lunatic
asylum. Dr. Gasley, who revises the
. medical reports. At meals the King
sits at the head of the table, and ' at a
certain , distance the adjuncts, the
physician and the Court Marshal. The
King eats with a hearty appetite,drinks
a few glasses of beer, and now and then
calls in a sharp tone of command for a
glass of his favorite wine. He insists
on being completely unobserved, and
he himself takes no notice of his guests.
What he wishes for is brought-at a sign
' from the physician. The King uses
knife and fork like every one else, buf
he often scorns to use a table napkin,
'. and he makes his coat serve the . pur
pose." Hints For Onr Girls.
Girls should be taught to cook well.
Much, misery comes from bad cooking.
A young man marries a girl who can
not cook a decent meal. Then - mis
chief begins. He works hard, earns
money, gives most of it to her. She
takes the money, buys victuals, cooks
them badly. He and she eat them.
The victuals are so badly cooked that
tbey will not sustain the fires of in
dustry. He seeks stimulants, drinks.
She. poor and ignorant creature, gets
consolation from the nearest sewing
society. She can't understand the
change that has come - over him. ' He
knows ft will do no good to acquaint
her with the truth; it would be straugei
than Action to her. - .
There are thousands of cases em
braced in this outline, all caused by the
prevailing inability to cook well. Boys
are trained for practical duties of life.
Girls need a more comprehensive edu
cation. They should be taught how to
cook a decent-meal, one that sustains
the tires of application, without which
no man can succeed in the tattle - of
of life. Every girls1 school should hava
among its faculty a competent cooking
teacher.
Monte Carlo.
The profits of the tables at Monte
' Carlo last year were greater than in
any previous year; in fact, they were so
satisfactory that the company decided
to enlarge the Casino,' and thework
has been proceeding rapidly all through
the summer. - So far there have 'been
very few visitors to Monte Carlo" this
season; and " only five - tables in .. the
-Center room are being played at. -;
