Yes- terday the contract for the hauling and delivering of the material for the stfeet railway along" the line was awarded to the City Transfer company, of Corvallis. This will be quite a job. . . . The first lot of ties for the road will arrive here to-morrow from the mill of Brown & Son on the Santiam. . , . The iron is expected to arrive in Portland at any day now and will be brought to the city by the Union Pacific boats. ... J. E. McCoy, of Salem, who has the contract for construction, will begin work-just as soon as the rails arrive. Great Advantages. We visit ed the sound country last week but we saw no place in Washington that is better than Yaquina bay in beauty, scenery or natural location. The advantage the sound country has over this place at the present time is in the rush of immigration which creates business activity. The remains wore taken to Mon mouth for internnent on Wednesday. HURD.- At Friiitvule, Benton county, Oregon, . March 28tli. 1890, Mary Ann Hnrd, wife of Moses . Hurd, aged 68 years, 11" months and 27 days. She was laid at rest at Fruitvale where she has lived nearly fourteen years. The cause of her death was la grippe and career on her face. BEACH. At the farm residence just across the -river from Corvallis, on Sunday, April 6, 1890, at 12:10 a. m., Hiram P. Beach, aged 64 years, 10 months, and 23 days. The deceased had been ill but a short time a physician being called on Wednesday preceding bis death. He has been a resident of thi vicinity for the past six yearsj was a gooid cifi- zen and a hard-working man. He has been twice married, and is the father of ten children, eight of whom are liv ing.' Oue child was by his first wite. The announcement of his death was a great surprise to this community owing to the short illness. The remains were interred in the Masonic cemetery by the members of that order and also the Corvallis grange. . . LOCAL AND GENERAL. Roads are fast drying up. Pipes has been appointed a notary public by the governor. There are now about 300 scholars in attendance at the Coivallis public school. A choice assortment of materials for fancy work, novelty braids, etc., at the Ladies'. Bazaar. The Southern Pacific can now begin the west side extension. The right-of- way has all been secured. A wodden building is being con structed, just north of the brick livery stable, by M. W. Wcins. It is said that the Anacortes boomers pay the Oregonian $3,000 a month for the "specials" that that paper daily publishes from that headquarters of wind and gall, as regular telegrams. Astorian. Prof. Loisettte's memory system is creating greater interest than ever in all parts of the country, and persons wishing to improve their memory should send for his prospectus free as advertised in another column. Evangelical church. Preaching at Beulah church on Sunday at 10:30 a. m.; at Evergreen fit 2:30 p. in.; here in Corvallis at 7:30 p. m. Prayer meet ing each Thursday night at 7:30 o'clock. Choir practice each Friday .night at 7:30 o'ciock. Quarterly meeting will be held at the M. E. church in Corvallis next Saturday and Sun'lay, April 12th and 13th. Rev. S. P. Wilson, P. E., will be present to preach and conduct the meeting, First service Saturday at 2 p. m. followed by the nsual service. . The Presbytery of Ofegon has been in session the past few days in Port land. Dr. Thompson and J. H. Wil son have been in attendance. They expect to retiifn to-day and Dr. Thompson will occupy his pulpit as usual on Stimlay morning and evening. A CALL. On Tuesday lasf the stockholders of the national bank, which, will soon be opened in Corvallis in the room of the "Benton county bank," held a meet ing and elected the' following officers: M. S. Woodcock, president; Z. H. Davis, vice president; J. F. Yates, cashier; W. T. Wiles, and M. S. Woodcock',- directors. The name adopted is the First National Bank, of Corvallis.
