What the Southern Pacific is going
to do this coming summer in the mat
ter of building additional lines is a
mystery to all. But all Corvallisites
and westffcide people very much desire
is the extension of that company's
west line from Corvallia to the now
main line. What reason they have
for constructing the bridge across the
Willamette river at Ray's landing
cannot be understood, especially when
only a few more dollars, above the tost
of this bridge, would complete the
afore-mentioned road. Let's fee patient,
though. Probably the S. P. officials
will decide yet to do this.
MISTAKES
Whatever may be the general be
lief concerning mistakes made in news
paper offices, it is a fact that, for every
error made, a dozen, made by outsiders,
are corrected, and if the matter of
spelling was included in the estimate
the proportion would be nearer 100 to
one than 12 to one. A great many
people who send paragraphs for publi
cation seem to believe that the worse
the manuscript looks the more it con
forms to that to which the printers are
accustomed. This may have been true
years .ago, but to-day the professional
newspaper writers furnish, in a large
majority of cases, neat and legible
"copy," and the average is much better
than that sent "in from outside. The
pains taken to correct evident or pos
sible mistakes would cause surprise to
anybody not acquainted with the
workings of a printing office. Fre
quently there is a date which must be
incorrect, inasmuch as the day of the
week and the day of the month do not
conform.
TEE NATIONAL WEALTH.
The percentage plan of figuring the
growth of-the national wealth is " de
ceptive. As a nation grows in wealth
and population the percentage of in
crease : uniformly diminishes." Take,
for example, the growth of a city in
population. It has, we will say, a
population of 10,000 to start, with.:
At the end of ten years the growth of
5,000 is shown; ten years later 6,000
more have been added; and . at the
close of the third decennial period a
further increase of 7,000 is exhibited
That would seem to be a very satis
fato'ry growth. " But, according to the
free trade percentage cranks, that towu
has been los'ng ground the whole time.
How sot Because the growth the first
ten years was fifty percent., the second
ten years forty per cent., and the third
only 33 per cent. The gain during the
third period was 2,000 more than dur
ing the first, and the city has grown
from 10,000 to 28,000 in the thirty
years, an i yet according to the free j
trade figures it must have been losing
all the time. According to the per
centage plan New York, Chicago,
Cleveland, and all the great cities are
losing ground, and yet everybody
knows they are growing enormously. -
The New York World has made a
good deal of noise about comparative
percentage of growth. ' Under its
management it claimed an increase
from 25,000 to 100,000 copies daily
the first year or about 300 per cent.
The next year it claimed a circulation
of 150,000, an increase of 50 per cent.,
while its increase last year, the largest
in any year, according to its own theory
applied to itself, the World will have
to suspend and go up the spout in
about two years more. ' v
It is the actual growth, not the per
centage of growth, in which the people
are interested. The actual growth in
national wealth from 1850 to 1860,
according to the census, was nine
thousand million of dollars. ' The actual
growth from 1870 to 1880 was thirteen
thousand millions of dollars. Dividing
the national wealth among all the peo
ple equally at each of the four periods
named and we find that the average
wealth of each man, woman and child
was $308 nv 1850, $514 in 1860, $780
in 1870, and $870 in 1880. These are
the census figures, but the census of
1850 was notoriously incomplete, and
the values of 1870 were swollen by
monetary inflation about 20 per cent.
Making due allowance for these facts,
the average for each of the four periods,
would, on a gold basis in each case,
stand about as follows: 1850, $400;
1860, $514; 1870, $650; 1880, $870
an increase of 28 per cent per capita
from 1850 to 1880. The wealth of
the country is growing: faster than its
population, and the wealth of each
citizen increased more in the second
period under tariff for revenue only,
and what more could the fiee trade
cranks desire?
The future of the railroad system in
the northwest can hardly be told. It
is certain that it is yet in its infancy.
What will come, time alone- can tell.
During the next two years, Oregon and
Washington will in all probability see
such an extension of present, and con
struction of new ones as were witness
ed in Kansas a few years ago. There
re so many projects on foot and so
many towns clamoring for railroad
connections that much must result.
The mileage for these two states is very
small considering their area and re
sources, and comparing them with
eastern states. The fact that we are
lacking is not due to any failure to ap
preciate our opportunities, but the con
dition simply arises from ours being a
new countiy. There are no states in
the Union offering better, rewards for
railroad investments. -Astorian. -

WHY HE DIDN'T RIDE.

both Justices of the Peace, were

(at that time a beautiful country
road) when they saw in the dis
tance the Rev. Mr. Thorn, minister
of the latter perish, coming toward

solved to have a joke at his ex
pense. When they came to the
minister one of them accosted him
