That railroad from Brownsville here
nay be built.
The railroad companies just now are
troubled by too many banks snow
banks.
There is one thing very evident just
at present this is not the june-bug
season in Oregon.
Should the Brownville road be
built to Corvallis the Willamette will
be spanned by another bridge.
There is one thing Corvallis doesn't
want and that is the 1592 world's fair
but she does need an annual county
fair.
There are six bridges across this
"Willamette river at different points
and only two of them are free struc
tuies.
If you know anything about build
ing street car lines, just end in your
bid to the Corvallis street railway

This is tough on the young medical
students who will tackle the old chromo
in some dissecting room.
In the article "to kill the grain
weevil," in the Gazette, of the 10th,
in speaking of remedies the word
"avoid" was omitted, in the seventh
clause; it should read: and avoid a high
temperature by every possible means.
Jefferson Davis never came north
after the war. In 1867 he was invit
ed to deliver an address at a fair in
Jtockford, 111., by Charles Kim
bull, secretary of the agricultural so
ciety, but the proposition was so un
popular that the invitation was can
celled.
In these days ot puffing and blow
ing about the products of the farm,
orchard and herds, the miner who is
delving in the out of the way creeks,
in deep canyons surrounded by dense
forests, with only a trail leading to his
place of business, is not often seen in
print, yet nevertheless he keeps at
work and is unearthing thousands of
dollars every week. Exchange.
In a little town near Chicago there
is a school house close to the tracks ot
a trunk-line railroad. The consequence
of this juxtaposition of the two things
is one that never would occur to any
but the boyish mind. The boys got un
a game which consisted in their seeing
which one should b- the last to jump
across the track in front of the express
train that passes there at fifty miles an
hour just after school lets out. This
game has already cost at least three
lives. The other day a railroad em
ployee went to the mother of one of
the boys to tell her what her son was
doing. She told him she could take
care of her own children and wanted
no interference by tattletales. She
gave him a scolding he will never foi -get.
One reason why he will never
forget it is that the boy was killed by
the express train one week afterward.
The engineer said he saw the boy
standing by the track, but never
dreamed he meant to try to cross it
ahead of the train.
PROTECT THEM.
Perhaps there is no industry in the
United States whose importance is
greater and which is more worthy of
the fostering caie of the protective
system than is that of wool-growing.
That the, country is especially adapted
in many portions to this industry has
never been denied, and is especially
demonstrated by the fact of its great
and rapid growth under a system of
partial protection.
The Boston Commercial Bulletin's
annual telegraphic canvass of the wool
supply of the country shows a heavy
increase over that of last year, and
with further protective legislation the
future of the wool industry in the
United States should be a bright one,
in view of the additional fact that
more careful business methods are be
ing pursued by the great dealers, re
sulting in a large , dimunition of the
failures reported during the year. , "

REDUCING THE DEBT.
The debt of the United States is be
ing rapidly reduced. Twenty-two
years ago it was over $2,700,000,000
next to that of England, at that
time the gte test national debt in the
world. December 31, 1889, it had
been reduced to nearly $1,610,000,000,
with about $527,021,000 in the na
tional treasury available for the reduc
tion, leaving the net public debt at
$1,083,548,053. Of the total debt only
$829,897,462 bears interest The in
terest bearing debts are $121,367,700,
paying 4 per cent, interest and due in
1891; 629,795,700, paying 4 per cent,
interest, and due in 1907; 164,723,515
Pacific railroad debt, paying 6 per
cent, interest, and redeemable at vari
ous periods within the next ten or
eleven years; $14,000,000 of the navy
pension fund, and a few thousand dol
lars of outstanding refunding cer
tiScatea, issued by Mr. Windom v hen
he was previously secretary of the
treasury under the Garfield-Arthur ad
ministration. The debt bearing no in
terest amounts to $768,580,522, con
sisting mostly of greenbacks and gold
silver certificates. Tne cash in the
treasury consists principally of $100,-
000.000 held as reserve for the re
demption of greenbacks; gold held for
notes actually outstanding, $122,985,-
889; silver held for silver certificates
actually outstanding, $283,949,078,
and two or three smaller items. Dur
ing the entire time this great reduction
was being made and the surplus accu
mulated, the country has enjoyed the
greatest prosperity. Ibere is at this
time no cloud on the future, and con
tinued prosjverity will result in a con
tinued decrease of the public debt.
Kate Field is getting in her
work. Here is a sample: We
ought to establish in the United
States a school deportment for
public men. And the first motto
I should hang up over the door
would be: "Don't sit on your
spinel" I couldn't help thinking
of that as I sat in the gallery of
the house of representatives the
day the chief justice delivered his
oration. In marched the presi
dent and Mr. Blaine, followed by
the other secretaries, and sat
down in the first row of the am
pitheatre. Sat? Yes, sitting is
what it is called. Within live
minutes every mother's son of
them, with perhaps one exception,
had slid down so that his body
was supported by his shoulder
blades and the small of his back.
The justices of the supreme court
followed, and down they went in
the same way. So did-the rest of
the dignitaries, as bevy after bevy
filed in. In contrast with them,
there sat the foreign ministers and
the delegates to the .two inter
national conferences, as upright as
ramrods.
AXOEKOOS PURGATIVES.
A City FoUceman'i Experience.
Mineral pills and drastic purgatives so irritate
the mucous coatings of the stomach and bowels,
that they often leave the system in worse con
Jition than before. In fact their cathartic ac
tion is due to their Irritation. The danger at
tending their steady use is apparent. The new
laxative principle in Joy's Vegetable Sarsaparilla
rets Its cathartic action by Increasing the mu
cous secretions and gently stimulating the stom
ach, it is purely vegetable, does not lose its
effect, is effective and absolutely safe to be taken
occasionally or contlnously by the most delicate

king it, and never bad my system so thoroughly
regulated. By increasing or diminishing the
dose one has absolute command over himself
with this valuable remedy."

Pitcher's Castoria.
A civil engineer surveying in

100 arastras were found grouped
about patios of immense size,
overgrown with lorest trees four
feet in diameter. At the mouth
of the shafts and tunnels are im

Baby One Solid Rash
Ugly, painful, blotched, malicious. No rest
by day, no peace by night. Doctors and
all remedies failed. Tried Cuticura.
Effect marvellous. Saved his life.
Cured by Cuticura
Our oldest child, now six years of aee.
when an infant six months "Id was attacked
with a virulent, malignant skin disease.
All ordinary remedies failing we called our
family physician, who attempted to cure it;
but it spread with almost incredible
rapidity, until the lower portion of the little
fellow's person, ftoin the middle of his back
down to his knees, was one solid rish, ugly,
painful, blotched, and malicious. We had
no rest at night, no peace by day. Finally,
we were advised to try the Cuticura Kkme-
dies. The effect was simply marvellous.
In three or four weeks a complete cure was
wrought, leaving the little fellow s person
as white and healthy ns though he had
never been attacked. In my opinion, your
valuable remedies saved his life, and to-dov
he is a strong, healahy child, perfactly well,
no repetition of the disease having ever oc
curred. GEO. B. SMITH,

Boy Covered with Scabs
My boy, aged nine years, has been
troubled all his life with a very bad humor.
which appeared all over his bxly in small
red blotches, with a dry while scab on
them. Last year he was worse than ever,
being covered with scabs from the top of his
head to his fet, aud continually growing
worse, although he hau been treated by
twe physicians. As a last resort, I de
termined to try the Cuticura Remedies,
and am happy to say they did all .that I
could wish. Using them according to di
rections, the humor rapidly disappeared,
leaving the skin fair and smooth, and per
forming a thorough cure. The Cuticura
Kf.mrdies are all yon claim for them.
