KOOSKVELT ON BEER.
Theodore Roosevelt, the young
member of the civil service com
mission, was in Milwaukee and
has gone again. When the com
mission went to Schlitz's park Mr.
Koosevelt declined to go into the
theatre, saying that he would give
more for five minutes under the
trees than a whole evening of
grand opera. So they sat down
and talked of literature while
drinking lager beer.
"Do you know," said Mr. Roose
velt, holding up his glass and look
ing through the amber hued liquid,
"that there is not a thought in a
hogshead of beer, that there is not
an idea in a whole brewery? I
mean," continued the New York
politiciad, "that nothing of merit
was ever written under the inspi
ration of lager beer. Ii stupefies
without invigorating, and its effect
tipon the brain is to stagnate
thought. Do not imagine that I
am a temperance orator. I am
a temperance orator. I am simply
comparing stimulants. Some of
the brightest of literary efforts have
been made while under the in
fluence of spirituous liquor taken
by the poor, overvverked author to
avoid a complete physical and
mental collapse. I shall wait to
see if and man can write anything
who has a drop of beer in his sys
tem." Milwaukee Sentinel.
FEARFULLY AND WONDERFULLY
MADE.
An old preacher, after service
on Sunday, announced his reading
lor the following Sunday. During
the week some mischievous boys
obtained his Bible and pasted two
of the leaves together, right where
he was to read. Sunday morning
the aged divine opened his book
and read as follows: '-And Noah
took unto himself a wife who was"
and here he turned the leaf
uforty cubits broad, one hundred
and forty cubits long." With a
look of astonishment he wiped his
glasses, re-read and verified the
passage and then said "My friends,
alshough I have read the Bible
many times, this is the first time
1 have ever seen this passage, but
I take it as another evidence of
the fact that man is most wonder
fully and fearfully made." N. Y.
Mercury.
THE NAVY YARD.
It is understood that the selec
tion of the site on Puget sound for
a navy yard has been indorsed by
the secretary of the navy. The
yard which is to be established is
to meet half way the improve
ments in Great Britain's navy yard
at Esquimalt, and will be the
largest and finest in the country.
It will be equipped with the fullest
plant for ship-building and repair
ing, and will, it is said, include ex
tensive furnaces and forges for
steel and iron works, and it is a
matter of general congratulation
that a navy yard is to be establish
ed somewhere on this northwest
coast as it will be of mutual aid
and benefit.
The Rev. Edward Everett Hale
asks the legislature of Massaohu
setts to grant the right to pension
school teachers who have served
fifty consecutive years. Were this
done, the list of pensioners would
Bot be a very long one. In the
west there are comparatively few
teachers of great age. The men
usually grow weary of their calling
and seek other employments and
the ladies are retired on marriage
certificates. Com. Gazette.

A gentleman in Craig county
named Brickey has three children
whose names are, respectively,
Jailey Green Bird Mayflower
Brickey, Oregon Texas Georgian na

taw Sebilla Teotater Brickey. Our
informant, P. B. Abbott, assures
us that theso are the names of the
children as recorded in the family

about it. But the longest name
yet announced is also borne by a
Craig county man, John William
