Monday nominated by the republican
county convention for state senator.
Hon. L. D. Thoman, civil service
commissioner has tendered his resigna
tion to president Cleveland, which has
been accepted to take effect November

Hon. Geo. H. Williams to the United
States Senate. His distinguished abil
ities, as well as those great public ser
vices by which he shed lustre upon the
name of Oregon, are so well known
and appreciated as to leave nothing to
be added, touching the proprietr and
policy of placing him again in the
Senate. While republicans of eastern
Oregon are not entirely unanimous in
their preference for any particular can
didate, it may be safely said that the
election of Judge Williams would give
general satisfaction east of the moun
tains, and go as far as any action of
the legislature could go toward consign
ing to oblivion those personal animosi
ties which have heretofore been so dis
astrous to the party- "a consummation
devoutly to be wished."

of the immense range of opposing forces
that are preparing for the winter's cam-

cent massacre of Chinese at Rock
Springs.
Des Moines Register: The spirit of
the great fight in 1888 is in the air
All republicans feel it and are respond
ing to it The party is beginning in
1885, the contest for restoration to
national power in 1888. All republi
cans are on their mettle. The cam
paign for the next presidency has be
gun now and in earnest and no Iowa
republicans are going to be missed at
the first roll calL It is a national tight
now, and every republican is in line,
and any a recruiting officer for the par-
time he has made no preparations. He
is alienated, to a certain degree, the
leaders of his party among the demo
cratic senators, nearly all of whom have
some grievance against the president
They are his allies as yet, but they are
not cordial on es. It would be very
easy for him yet to make them his
friends. A prominent republican sen
ator who called upon the president the
other day, was asked to give his opin
ion of Cleveland. This is what hesaid:
I think the president is an honest,
upright, well-meaning gentleman, but
he is more in need of information con
cerning public affairs than anybody I
know of."

Is the administration freezing them?
Too many of the oldest and most hon
ored men of the party have been com
pletely frozen out. Seven months after
the inauguration of a democratic presi
dent many of the high offices of the re
public and a large majority of the res
ponsible positions at the disposal of the
administration remain in republican
hands: and still there is no sign of
change. The questions to be considered
are these: How manv thousonds of
democrats in Ohio sat down on election
day disappointed and disgusted! How
many are going to sit do vn with the
same feeling in New York and Massachusetts)
The special session of the Oregon
legislature will convene tt Salem Nov
ember 9th, 1885. Each individual
member should be anxious to get an
other chance at legislation, in order to
undo the blunders that were, in part at
least, of his doing last spring. Twen
ty days, the period allotted to the spec
ial session, unless indeed the abound
ing philanthropy of members should
induce them to stay beyond the limit
without- pay, is time sufficient for con
sidering the measures oi "vital impor
tance to the people" which induced the
governor to call the legislature togeth
er, and if judiciously, temperately and
carefully used will do mnch in the way
of expunging, if not from the records,
from the public mind the factious action
of the forty days' session that involved
the republican party of the state in
disgrace, to the great comfort and de
light of its enemies. Of course, the
legislature of the state was called at
this time for a specific object the elec
tion of a United States senator. Bal
lot ing upon the names of candidates
for this position cannot take place nn
til the second luesday of the session,
hence there will be seven days in which
to attend to matters of minor detail be
fore the balloting for senator begins.
Republicans, being in good working
majority, will be held accountable by
the public for the errors that may be
committed, and will be accredited with
the good that may result. If the lead
era of this party in the legislature are
sagacious enough and magnanimous
enough to put personal preferences and
petty spite resolutely under their feet,
and work as legislators rather than as
individuals, the session will result sat
lsfactonlr and beneficially, lnere is
every incentive to action of this kind.
Everything is to be gained by it, and
everything upon which a party can go
before the people and ask their suf
frages m this state at the next election
is jeopardized, if not lost, by the op
posite line of conduct. Statesmanship
is not particularly required of Oregon
legislators at this time, but common
sense and temperate judgment is in
great demand. Telegram.
A three days' session ef the Mutual
United Brotherhood of Liberty associa
tion has iust closed in Baltimore. This
association is organizing in every state
and territory, and its object is to raise
money to test in the courts all infringe
meats of the rights of colored people, as
guaranteed them by constitutional and
statute laws.

Osawatomie, is taking a new lease of
life through Sanborn's memoirs, the
man who struck him down in tbe en
gine house at Harper's Ferry twenty
six years ago, is this month honored
with an office under the federal govern
ment, says a Washington dispatch. Is

of Ohio, spoke to a large audience in
New York recently. He contrasted
the causes which led to the going oat
of power of the democratic party twen
ty-five years ago and the republican
party of a year ago. He said that the
achievements of the republican party
met with universal approbation now,
and asserted that had there been a free
ballot and honest count in tbe .South it
would still be in power. He defended
the bloody -shirt policy. He said this
policy did not operate to revive the
memories of the war, but it was neces
sitated by occurrances since the conflict
and he con t lasted it with Fits Hush
Lee's campaign in Virginia. The dem
ocrats, he continued, promised to look
over tbe books, count the money and
restore prosperity. The former two
promises they have performed, but the
latter vas unredeemed. The country
was looking to president Cleveland for
his policy. If he pronounced for pro
tection this third promise would be
performed, but free trade would inten
sify the present depressed condition of
business.
