FKIDAY MORJilKG. APR. 6, 18S3 SCIENTIFIC MISCELLAKT. fWrttten expressly for the GiZRrri! by a celebrated hlUsri Scientut. A Freuch and an American party the latter accompanied by two English astronomers hope to wit ness the total ecKpm: of May 6th from mall israoda in the South Pacific. A special effort will be made to dis cover any planet which may exist nearer the tun than Mercury, and the unusual duration of this eclipse nearly bx. minutes will greatly favor the observers in their search. After a series of intciesiing ex periments in Paris, Moo. P. H. Deherain has concluded that while the radiations from an electric are lamp may maintain mature plants in vegetation for a considerable time without aid from the sun. the liyht is not sufficiently powerful to cause the growth of germinating see'ls or to How of the maturing of fruit on the older plants. Mons. Jaussen has found the high desert plateaux of Algeria to have an atmosphere so remarkably clear that the moons of Jupiter arc vif ible to the naked eye. A now book of Siberian travels mentions that the native winter fish ejrmeu stir up the sturgeons, which lie congregated in the muddy hollows of the river Irtish, by dropping red hot lumps of clay through holes in the ice. The heat rouses the fish, which rise, swim up the stream, anil are caught by ppring-lines previously set for them. A prize of about $250 has been offered by the Agricultural society of Breslaw for a cheap, easily applied aud effective destroyer of field-mice, proposals to be sent in befjre Sep tember. Baroc Nordenskjold is to under take an Arctic expedition to Xoith Greenland this year. The excavation of Pompeii was begun in 1748, and about two fifths of the cily have since been brought to lig'at, giving to the mod ern world a remarkable monument, of civilization. This work has also shown something ot the nature and extent of the catastrophe which over whelmed Pompeii. The destruction was not, caused by lava, but by bm- ial iu a rain of ashes and cinders from Vesuvius. The larger part of the inhabitants had time to escape, but there is good reason to believe that at least 1100 perished about 450 bodies having thus far been found. It was a happy thought of Fiorelii, some twenty years ago, that by pour ing plaster of Paris in the moulds left in the soft ash casts might he made ot the victims iu the attitudes in which they met -their death. This plan has been carried out since then whenever human remains have been discovered, and tho result is that an extraordinary collection of protrails statues of the meu and women of eighteen centuries ago is now being made. The archaeologists aro not only restoring tlietago but they are also bringing before us the actors in the terrible Romau tragedy ot Au gust, '79. Ilerr Wagner has found that the a; plication of phosphoric acid to soil already rich is not always desirable; and an excess of the acid may, espec iallyina dry soil, prove actual I v injurious, probably by hastening the death of the pouts' organs of nutri tion. Tyndall has anpposad the color of the sea to bo due to a reflection by the water of ths blue rays of jrtfnlight red rays being transmitted: Were this view correct the light which passes through the water mnt be red, but Mods. Spring of the Belgian Academy finds that such is not the case, a distinctly blue color being een through a long tube of pure water. Attemps have been matle by va rious delicate experiments to measure the time which elapses between the movement when a person's sense of touch, sight or hearing is excited and the luomeat when he indicates by a signal that he has become con scious of the sensation. Hons. Bea nnis, of Nancy, has of late been try ing to determine the length of the interval or "reaction time" so-called in the case of smell. With ten substances he has obtained deiermiu ations ranging from 75 hundredths of a second for ammonia, and 40 for acetic acid, to 63 for mint, and 67 lor carbolic acid. With musk he has been unable to fix precisely the mo ment of the smell-sensation,- although he has repeatedly attempted to do 60. Dr. Buccola, of Turin, has also been experimenting on smell, using different apparatus, and his results agree in-main with those of Mens. BcHiu.is. From a compiuison !' these observations with those which have been made on other senses, it appears that wo are slower to pre- ceive smell than either touch, sight or hearing. A systematic medical inspection of the eyes, ears and teeth of pupils in the public schools ot Paris is pro posed by the Muncipal Council, with the object of studying and treating any constitutional or chronic diseases which may be manifested. Consiilersble popular interest in astronomy exists among our English cousins, and the amateur students, are snowing growing dispositions to organized observations of CW heav ens. A wide field for effort such as comet seeking and study of sus pected variable stars is open, in which observers of little experience and small means may, by systematic work, do science real service. TLMPESANOE COLUMN. AGRICULTURAL NOTES. Dampness iu hen-houses, rains upon tlie coops, neglect in watering aud feeding, and vermin everywhere these are prime causes in produc ing disease among the poultry. With a little extra care early chickens can be raised as well as the later hatchings. Then, too, it is the early "spring chicken that brings the highest price, while the early pallet lays the most fall and winter Farmers should rise with the larks, now that spring lias come, and bow their clover seed before the winl rises. If any have neglected to sow their grass seeds, timothy, orchard, herd, bluegrass, etc., now is the time to sow. Not a flitting day or hoar should be uegiected from this busi ness. The good farmer house w'fe can take linn by the foretepjnst now by having her Ned or "the boys" pre pare chicken coops and nest boxes for sitting hens, before they start the plow. Then, too, the henhouse will need an over-haulirg, cleaning up and whitewashing for the spring season. In the management of poul try, as in everything else, cleanliness is next to godliness. In a recent lecture at the Lowell. Mass., Institute, Pro. George L. Goodale, the well-known botanist, stated that a.sunflower three and a half feet high, presented an evapo rating surface of thirty-nine square feet, and that the roots of such a sun flower had been found to aggregale fourteen hundred and forty-eight feet iu length. According to the same authority, grasses and similar plants, on a hot day in summer, evaporate their own weight of water. . POINTED AND PITHT. A Delaware woman in scratching a match on her shoe set her clothing on fire and was fatally burner!. This is a strong arsnmint why women should wear pints. Untii thev can scratch matches on the hip they'll never be safe. 0 "Man," says Victor Huso, "was the con undrum of the eighteenth century." An Americau editor adds: "We can't guess her but will never give her up no never." A man has invented a chair that can be adj-isted to 800 different positions. It is designed for s boy to sit in when he Roes to churen. An exchange contains an article on "Yoans Women Who Die Earlr." This frequently occurs; but the cnies of old wo men v.-ho die early are very few indeed. the coat tail flirtation is the latest. A wriaiiled coat tail bearing dusty toe marks means, "I have spoken to your father." Can a lover be called a suitor when he don't suit her? "Is your father a Christain?" said a gen tleman to a littie boy on one occasion. "Yes sir." said the little boy; "But I ljlieve he has not worked much at it lately." "What are yon doinc;," said a father to his son, who was tinkering on an old watch. "Improving my time," was the reply. "I'm not in mourning, "said a young lady fr.vikly to a querist, "but as the widows are letting all the officers nowadays, we poor girls must do something to protect our selves. " "Hauna," said a landlady to her servant "when there's any bad news always let the hoarders know it before dinner, such little things make a great difference in the course of a year." (Written by a special correspondent.) TIPPLERS. Society can be divided into bnt three errand divisions in its relatious jto the temperance question. The first division embraces the totat abstainers, the second the tipplers, and the third the confirmed drunk ards. In the first division we finri the young, those supposed to be un der parental authority, also we iini included iu this department those ot maturity, who from a sense of duty to themselves, to their posterity, ami their creator, have determined to live a life of total abstinance. The tipplers compose the second and by far the largest division. Their numbers are iegions. They are in every society, political, social sad religious, as well as those who are not directly allied to these organiza lions. The grand army of tipplers has hi its ranks men aud women. Church members and non Church members, Masons, Odd Fellows, Mormons, Grangers, and to the humiliation of the nfer, it must be admited that some Good Templars are found iu this army. The tipplers are a very numerous horde and it they cou.d be marshaled in doable tiie they would encircle the earth, and what a motley mess of humanity they would present to the beholder. It ought to Rend a blush of shann over the cheeks of every man and woman that Ins any refined sensi bilities left in them, to suffer them selves to be placed in such a classi fication as a tippler. Look at the rippierand what is he? Just one step from the total abstainer, and on more step ahead of him and he i with the drunkard. Very often the man that is reported to be a tippler is a drunkard. He may not be a boisterous loud mouth drunkard, bus ho is one nevertheless. It is not necessary that one should steai an elephant to make him a thief, he may steal some smaller animal and be en tuled to that character. So a man need not get drunk ofien ami go on a big drunk at that, to be entitled to lire character of being a drunkard. The tippler sustains the relat.ion to the drunkard that the tadpole does to the frog he is the unaevelope? frog every tippler is an undevel oped drunkard; he is tile materia! out of which the drunkard is evolved Tho conclusion is, then, in the firs place, that the human race is natur ally on the side of total abstinance. In the second place, they that In come drunkards are raads so by habits, and in the third place if tin practice of tippling is avoided the drunkard would find no place in our social system. Which is the best fo every person to observe total absti nance or tippling ? Let revelation, history, experience, observation and conscience answer. STEAM POWER !
