FRIDAY MORNING, MAR. 9, 1883.
SCIENTIFIC MISCELLANY.
rWrltUn expressly for theXUzETTl by a celebrated
Eastern Scientist.
A remarkable botanical specimen
is reported to exist in Peiur, India,
in the form of a date palm which
changes its positioo morning and
evening. The tree is eleven feet in
height, and' in tho afternoon ia in
clined so near the ground that chil
dren may pluck its fruit from branch
es which in the morning are far
above their reach.
Mons. Vajlin has made some ex
periments upon the virus of of tuber
culosis to determine the action of
various disinfectants. With the tu
bercular substance he obtained, dis
ease could be readily produced in
animals,' but exposure to sulptmr
fumes, boiling water or a solution of
corrosive sublimate destroyed the
power of the virno to produce such
an effect. The result of the experi
ments prompts Mons. Vailin to sug
gest that it would be a wise precau
(ion to give prisons, barracks, hos
pitals and schools a yearly purifying
by sulphurous fumigation.
The Desert of Sahara, according
to an address by Prof. Guido Cora
to the Italian Geographical Society
has a total area of 3,700,000 square
miles, not more than one-fifth of
which is covered by sand; The mean
elevation of the desert is from 1300
to 1650 feet above sea-level, but its
mountain chains attain a height of
from 655a to 8200 feet, In some
parts rains occur only once in some
twenty years, while in others there
is a regular rainy season. While
the temperature rises to 122 degrees,
It sometimes falls below 20 degrees
and snow and ice cover the highest
mountain summits during several
months of the year. The animals
and plants are of much Interest and
importance. The human population
numbers some 3,000,000, and the
desert contains towns of from 500u
to 10,000 inhabitants.
Sir William Thomson finds that
'sunlight has about 70,000 times the
intensity of the light of the full moon
at any place on tle earth, and about
53,000 tiroes that ef candle-flame.
The latter result differs widely from
that obtained by Arago, who found
the light of the sun to have about
15,000 times the intensity of candle
flame. It the assumption that nitcher
plants eat the insects caught by their
leaves is correct, there is no reason
why the plants should not, like meat
eating animals, experience ill effects
"from over-gorging themselves; and
by an exhibition 0f Sarracenias be
fore the London Royal Horticultural
Society, Mr. Veitch has shown
that moderate eating seemed to ben
efit them, while injury resulted when
dead insects accumulated on the
leaves.
Mons. Bacle's investigations have
convinced him that changes of tem
perature have little eflect upon the
strength of railway tires. If accidents
to ties are more frequent in cold
weather than at other times, it is due
probably to the increase of rigidity
and irregularity of the road, which
adds to the violence of the shocks
received by the tires.
The advantage of planting trees in
the streets and open spaces of towns
has been a recent topic of discussion
among Swiss scientists. In the opin-
rr. Ti i -i . . .
ou ui ur. fiacnaua, me trees im
pede the circulation f the air to
such an injurious extent as to moxe
than counterbalance any good effects
they may produce. To this view
Prof. Goret replies that trees temper
the heat and serve as a protection
from dust, while the evaporation
from their leaves helps to keep the
air oool and moist. He contends also
that the roots of trees absorb much
fiilh which would otherwise render
the subsoil of streets dangerous breeding-places
of disease.
Dr. Alex Mayer proposes the use
of burial cases of glass in place of the
ordinary wooden coffins. Such cases,
when hermetically sealed, would ef
fectually prevent the escape of un
wholesome gases to pollute the sir
of cemeteries. By replacing the air
in the cases with an anti-putrid gas,
the bodies might be indefinitely pre
served from decomposition, all the
advantages of embalming being in
expensively secured. ' Hermetically
sealed caskets are much more likely
to meet with widely extended ap
proval than are crematory fnruaces.
Noticing that the little spiders
which live in flowers and prey upon
various insects are sometimes yellow
and sometimes white. Mr. James
Angus suspected that their color
changes to correspond with that of
(be flower in which Ibey Bay be
making their home. Experiment
proved this to be so, white spiders
being found to turn yellow in two or
three days after being placed on a
sunflower. This change in color of
course adds to the facility of these
creatures in concealing themselves
from their intended prey.

TEMPERANCE COLUMN.
PROHIBITION DOES PROHIBIT.
Prohibition does prohibit or else
every man that manufactures, sells or
drinks, would not be so bitterly op
posed to it. It is claimed by the
opposition to the prohibition that
this method of dealing with the liquor
question is unconstitutional, and that
tis imw-actable. We must maKe
this measure constitutional, State and
national, never let up untill prohibi
tion is inscribed on the statute of eve-
v Stats and also made the voice of
r.nr nation uttered in a clause in the
constitution of the United States.
We can prohibit, for we do; we
prohibit selling on election days,
selling to minors, selling to. Indians,
selling on Sabbaths and selling to
drunkards If we have the right to
prohibit on the above headings,
where do our legislators obtain that
rights as to the- impractibility of pro
hibition we can make the same argu
ment against a law that forbids mur
der, stealing gambling, opium smok
ing aud seduction; our statutes pro
vide severe puuishment for these
crimes, yet every court in our nation
has its list of culprits. Men that deal
in selling liquors breakw the law by
selling to minors, to drunkards and to
Indians and selling without a gov
ernment license. We nnnish them
when detected and caught. We don't
pretend to talk, of licensing them
because they will do these things.
We must asitate nntill we obtain
prohibition; pay no attention or re
gard to the old whiskey croakers,
and time serving demagouge who
whine and say that we cant enfor-oe
such a law if we had U; give the Amer
icau people the law first and we will
see to the enforcing of it; if men will
violate the law we can punish tbera,
we can punish a man just as easy for
selling or giving to a full grown and
of mature aged white man as we can
for selling to a'minor or an Indian.
If the officers of the law can't enforce
the law the people can and you may
depend on it.
First, To license is to protect the
sale of liqnor, not to stop it. 2nd.
To tax it is virtualy the same as to
license. 3rd. We are- notjustified mor
alv in renulatinsr an evil. 4th. An

MONTGOMERY WARD & CO.

Oneonta. New York. Jan. 6th
Earl v last summer Messrs. B. J. Kendall & Co. , of
Enosburch Falls. Vt. . made a contract with the cub-
li&hers of the Press for a half column advertisement
tor one -year setting forth the merits of Kendall's
Spavin Cure. At tne same time we secured rrom tne
firm a Quantity of books, entitled Dr. Kendall's
Treatiso on the horse and his Diseases, which we are
Kiving to advance paying suDscnDers to tne fress as
a premium.
About tho time the advertisement first appeared
in this paper Mr. P. G. Schermerhorn, who resides
near Colliers had a spavined horse. He read the ad
vertisement and concluded to test tne emcacy ox tne
remedv. although his friends laugbed at" bis creci
ulitv. lie bought a bottle of Kendall's Spavin Cure
and commenced rising it on the horse in accordance
with the directions, and he informed us tn.s week
that it effected such a complete cure that an expert
horseman, who examined the animal recently could
find no trace of the spavin or the place where it had
been located. Mr. Schermerhorn has since secured a
copy of Kendall's Treatise on the Horse and his Dis
eases, which he prizes very highly and would be
loth to part with at any price, provided he could
not obtain another copy. So much for advertising
reliable articles.
