OSEOON SHORT LINE.
The engineers of the Oregon Short
Line hare already located their road
down Snake river about 80 miles be
low Old ferry. One week ago last
Monday H. Hawgood, chief of the
party, had reached to a point below
Urowulie's ferry, and was progress
ing rapidly in the location. T. A.
Clark, chiet of the locating engineers
of the west, under Blickenstaff, chief
at Omaha, is now here and started
a party this week under R. J. Moscrit
chief of the party, to locate from this
point hp Snake river for the purpose
of meeting the party coming from
above. It is the full intention to di
vert the course of the Oregon Short
Line down on the east side of Snake
river to Lewiston. Mr. J. Edwards
is the transit man and Mr. Matthews
is the levellet of the rarty going from
Lewiston up. Another party will
soon be here for the company, for
other purposes."- Lewiston Teller

On Christmas day the iron was
laid on the Oregon Short T ine to a
point 11 miles west of Pocalello, and
to within 33 miles of Wood River
Junction. Track was being laid by
200 men at the rate of one to one and
one quarter miles rer day. Jne
gradinz was completed to Wood
River Junction except three or four
days' work. Wood River Junction
ia 125 miles from Bo-se, and grading
ia going on along the entire distance.
The company gives lree transporta
tion from all points on their lines

SCIENTIFIC MISCELLANY.
Written eiprewlr for the Gazette bj a celebrated
E&sUth Scientist.
The concealment of some animals
ia easily effected on account of the
adaptation of their colors to those
of surrounding objects in their na
tive wilds. This adaptation is the
mimicry of animals, and seems to be
a wise- provision of nature for the
protection of some of her creatures.
In the course of "a lesson in com
parative loology," Dr. II. W. Mitch-1
ml says that the giraffe has, perhaps
the most astonishing mimicry of any
animal. Its great size, which en
ables it to feed upon lofty tree
boughs in its native African forests,
makes it also a most conspicuous
object to its enemies, of which the
most dreaded a.-e the lion and man
Such is its mimicry, however, that
the most practised eye has failed to
distinguish the giraffe from one of
the dead and blasted trees which
abound in the hauuts of this animal.
Reliable evidence assures us that
lions have been known to gaze long
and earnestly at a motionless giraffe,
and, being unable to decide that it
was not a tree, to turn and skulk
away. '
Messrs. Pasteur, Chamberland
Roux and Thuillier have been inves
tigating rabies. They find that all
forms of it come from the same
virus. Death after inoculation with
rabid saliva may be either from an
organism existing in the saliva,. from
formation of much pus, or from
rabies. The investigators have now
four dogs which cannot take rabies.
Whether this is because the animals
have had a mild form of it and re
covered or because they are. natur
ally refractory to the disease is no
yet known.
A bone of contention is still found
IB sun-spots aud the question of
their influence upon our weather.
It has been asserted that any effect
produced upon our planet by an in
crease in the activity of the sun
must extend over the wholej world
and be felt in the same way in all
places. To this conclusion Mr. J.
A. Westwood Oliver, of Glasgow,
replies that the only way in which
the sun can affect the meteorological
conditions of our globe is by inten
sifying phenomena, and so render
ing the unlike conditions in differ
ent parts of the world more widely
aivergent tnan ever, weather re
cords prove, to Mr. Oliver's satis
faction, these five facts, viz: that in
certain localities of the earths sur
face a connection between the stale
of solar activity and the weather
(at least as regards temperature, rain
fall and atmospheric disturbance)
is apparent; that in other localities a
a connection is apparent, but of a
precisely opposite character that in
yet other localities no connection of
any kind is traceable, which may be
due to local circumstances, npon
which the weather often largely de
pends; that the connection is roost
obvious in tropical or sub-tropical
latitudes; and that, as a consequence
f the foregoing, combined records
frem ill parts of the globe fail to ex
hibit the' eonneetion, the two op
posite effects cancelling each other.
Archaeological researches have
shown that the ancient Egyptians
were familiar with dental processes
which are commonly regarded as
modern innovations. In tombs of
this people Belzone and others have
found artificial teeth of ivory or wood
some of them fastened upon gold
plates. Teeth of mummies filled with
gold have also been found, it is sta
ted. Observations of the solar corona
the bright halo which encircles the
sun and extends from it to a consid
erable distance in snaee have loner
been confined to the rare and brief
intervals when the sun itself is to
tally eclipsed. It is now announced.
however, by Wm. Huggins, F. R. S.,
that the corona has been successfully
photographed by him in th-s full
glare of the uneclipsed sun. Some
twenty plates have thus far been
obtained. With such a means of
observation within our reach as Mr.
Huggins has thus developed, it be
comes possible to keep a daily record
of the appearance of the corona and
to note its chancres as they occur.
Mr. E. J. Stone expresses confi
dence that the British contact ob
servations of the transit of venus
were so successful tbat they will re
duce the possible error in our esti
mate of the sun's distance to 300,000
miles or less.
From experiments by Herr J.
Moritz, it appears that a temperature
of from ten to twenty degrees below
zero may be readily produced by
mixing equal quantities of alcohol
and snow. The absence of any salt
or acid it! this freezing mixture may
sometimes be a point in its favor.
Regular observations of the rain
fall in Great Britain are made by1
more than 2,000 persons, the result
beinuj forwarded to Mr. G. J. Sym-
ons, the eminent meteorologist.
A remarkable shooting star was

The apple crop of the United
States, according to the census report
of 1880, in that year was worth SllS,
000,000. An experienced dairyman says that
he has by experiment demonstrated
that steamed food for milch cows is
25 per cent better than dry food.
The relish of food by livestock has
much to do with fattening. Only
when it is thoroughly relished is it
thoroughly digested, and fattening
depends on good digestion.
The annual harley crop of the
United States has gradually increas
ed during the past twelve, years
from 1871 to 1882, inclusive from
27,7i 8,500 bushels, in 1871 to 83,

Farmers who are raising bogs
should plant a 'few acres to arti
chokes. When once seaded they
need no re planting, and will make
the most feed for the least monev of
any crop that is raised. All who
have tried it speak in highest terms
of the artichoke.
The Minneapolis Tribune says that
goats' are the best land cleaners
known. It mentions that a herd of
1,600 entirely cleared a piece of brush
land, consisting of 600 acres in three
years. So complete was the work
that not a vestige of undergrowth
was left.
In 1872 the Elgin (111.) Board of
Trade for the sale of butter and
cheese was organized. The sales for
that year reached $87,000 only. Last
year the sales amounted to $2,219,
600. In one day in 1882, December
4, the saies reached $157,775.
A Fi ench scientist recently made
some experiments which go to show
mat most classes or insects, m pro
portion to their size, are from fifteen
to forty times as strong as a horse.
Those who doubt this can have their
doubts removed by testing the mat

One of the results of the late Com.
missioner Le Due's experiment in
tea raising at the South, has been
the adoption of the tea plant in some
localities as a hedge plant, for which
it is admirably adapted when soil
and climate are congenial to its
growth. It grows, low, bushy and
wellbranched, with dark, glossy,
evergreen leaves, and in autumn is
decorated with large, pure white
flowers.

One Secret.
Don't live a singh hour of your
life without doing exactly what is to
be done in it, and going straight
through it from beginning to end.
Work, play, study, whatever it is,
take hold at once and finish it up
square and cleanly; then do the next
thing without letting any moments
drop between. It is wonderful to
see how many hours those prompt
people contrive to make in a day; it
is as it they picked up the moments
that the dawdlers lost. And if ycu
find.yon have so many things press
ing you that you hardly know how
to begin, let me tell you a secret:
Take hold of the first one that comes
to hand, and yon will find the rest
afll into file and follow after -like a
company of well drilled soldiers; and
though work may be hard to meet
when it charges in a squad, it is easily
vanquished if yon'can bring it into
line, x ou may have seen the anec
dote of the tnan who was asked how
he "accomplished so much in his
life." "My father told me," was the
