Over the Fails .
"Three gone over the falls!"
How we were thriller! as the news
flashed to us; and how quickly the
cry "God help the mother's!" was
wrung lrom many a sympathizing
heart on hearing it.
It had been a matchless day, a
midsummer day in all its perfectness.
Lured by its beanty, three young
men had launched their little skiff"
some miles above the falls, and gone
out for a day of pleasure, Not a
thought of harm came to them in
that glad bright hour. There was
scarce a"ripple upon the watees be
neath tnem, nor cloud in the blue
skies above them; and as to the falls,
they were miles away. Satiated at
last with enjoyment they leaned up
on their oars and let themselves drift
with the current. Thus inactive,
sleep stole-down and laid its hands
upon them, and one after the other
yielded and slept heavily.
"A boat is drifting toward the
rapids!" began to echo alone the
shores, and feet to httrry anxiously.
The boat had now left tl calm wa
ters upon which it had been launched
and the rapids were around it; but
the ones within heeded it not. "Ho!
tiiere!" came from the shore, from
those who saw the danger.
"The rapids! Up with youthe falls
are nearing you !"
Still not a movement within the
little boat. The waves- splashed
round it mockingly, and the ones
lining the river's- bank grew wild
with excitement. At last a voice
clearer and sharper than the others,
broke through the heavy slumber,
and the sleeping ones started up and
with one look took in their situation--
A moment of frantic endeavor to
turn their course and the next the
boat lies bottom apwards, and two
of its late occupants are shot like- ar
rows over the falls and are seen no
more. The third is seen to catch at
a young sapling in the midst of the
roaring flood, and then to draw him
self tip om to a decayed tree-fcnink.
But can a boat reach him there?
Eagerly the ones beyond set to work
But each of their attempts falls back
a failure. Two-days and nights he
clings and the ones on shore work,
and then a boat touches his resting
place, and a murmur of relief" rises
from the waiting crowd. An in
stant of suspense, and then like a
knell goes out the cry, "Lost at last!"
Loosening his grip upon the tTee
to slip within the boat, benumbed
with cold and perfectly exhausted,
the 'unfortunate man had" made a
misstep, and slipping into the water,
the long cheated waves caught him
up and hurried him away as- though
hungry for thir prey.
Three young men in all the
strength of their manhood, swept
over! Three homes left desolate!
uthow about the young men
who, in the freshness of their bud
ding years, are swept over into ruin
by the waters of strong drink? Over
the falls th3y go! Who mourns thni?
And how of thousand of others
who to-day are drifting to take their
places, drifting with the current
with no thought of harm how of.
them, we say?
Gaily they launch their little crafts,
with blue skies above and clear wa
ters beneath them; no thought of
harm comas to them. If they think
of the foils below thenv into which
some are precipitated, it is only to
remember how far they are above
them; and to--rejoice in their security.
Lulled by beauty upon every hand,
the strength of the current they are
upon is forgotten. They allow their
oars to-lie quietly beside them while
they drift with the current. Perhaps
same cautious one along the shore
calls to them that they are drifting,
but only a mocking laugh is thrown
back for answer. With every manly
resolution lulled to slumber, theyd rift
on, unconscious of how the smooth
waters are being left behind, and the
o iy her ones are nearing them.
Those along the shore call out again:
"Hold on there! You are drifting too
near the falls !" But no-answer comes
from the little boat.
"Let them alone," comes from the
lips of indifferent ones among the
crowd.. "Let them alone. 'Tis a free
country!" And when they see their
words unheeded by the eager,. anx
ious ones, "Fanaticism" is thrown
out upon therm like a sting-. But
still the unselfish make efforts to
arouse the ones in danger. At the
last moment, when the seething floods
are upon them, the sleeping ones are
aroused to a sense of danger. But
the demon of strong drink lashing
around them rises now in. all its fury
to demand its prey. Nature abused,
has no power to resist, and down the
seething voitex they are plunged.
Lost! a thousand times more lost
than though the roaring Niagara had
engulfed them.
Young man, drifting even at this
momont with the current of tempta
tion around you, be warned in time;
the falls are below you over which
many have been swept! Stop now
before it is too late ! Yonr, oars of
strong manly determination are un
used beside yon, they are needed at
this moment, for the currents are
stionger than you think, and they
are tending in but one direction
your ruin ! Rouse, and assert your
manliness. You can resist now if you-
witt. Further on it will be impossi
ble. Say within yon: "One soul
shall be saved from ruin one moth
er's heart from breaking."

II. Kains Jackson has recently ex
pressed his opinion on the wheat
crop of the world as follows:
"The British crop, if reconed up
from the most divergent estimates,
willl be over 9,000,000 and under 12,
000,000 quarters, so as to take 10,
000,000 as the probable home supply
of wheat cannot much mislead the
buyer. Such 10,000,000 will be of
fered by the farmer n terms that
the position of affairs abroad will im
pose. Beyond home production, an
import of 14,000,000 quarters may
be admitted as necessary. Surplus
eountries are beleived to have: Amer
ica, 22,000,000; Russia, 7,000,000 In
dia, 4,000,000; Central Europe, 3,000
000; Australia and Chile, 1,000,000;
and to other countries may be as
signed 3,000,000 total Kingdom
will want 1 4,000,jBO leaving 26,000,
000 for France, Holland, Spain and
Portugal and those other coun
tries whose maximum imports f
wheat and flour rarely exceed 1,000,-
OOo qua it -rs each. Now if 16,000,-
ooc quarters be alio wed for wants out
side of England and the quantity is
liberal estimate there should still
remain 10,000,000 quarters of wheat
to replenish the stocks of the world.
Such 10,000,000, if fairly distributed
and lodged iu the mills andf grana
ries of Europe, need not create ful
ness in a single market. Ten million
as an extra reserve, over and above
present stocks, might ' sit slightl j e
nough in our farms and as stock in
private hands; but when such 10,
000,000 are not distributed, b it are
kept in bulk Jpy the chief holders of
America, India and Russia, the
wheat trade remains exposed to the
to the imminent danger of such
heavy surplus being pressed on the
market."
This gives a surplus over" needs of
eighty million bushels, and is a con
servative estimate. This, therefore,
is the lowest possible surplus of the
year. It is based on an American
crop less than five million bushels.
It is very evident, however, that the
American crop will reach at least
520,000,000 and may be much larger.
Here is an error of at least eighty
million bushels, varying according to
estimates of consumption in the
United States.
Then France this year will have
enough for her home consumption.
thus adding 8.000,000 bushels more
to the surplus. This inabes & total
of 88,000,000 bushels more thus al
lowed by Mr. Jackson.
It would appear, therefore, that
the world has an actual surplus- of
wheat this year of 168,000,000 bush
els; much more if the estimate of our
New York contemporary as to the
crop of the United States be taken
as the basis.. This is a large- surplus,
but It is nothing to-the annual con
sumption, which reaches close to two
thousand million bnshelsv We may,
therefore, look for lower prices, but
not for panic prices.

one of the mnrvels in this branch of
industry, the hrst Hour mill was-
built there in-1860, and-in that year
the shipments of flour were 30,000
barrels, and in 1831 3,142,97-T bar
rels. The quantity of' wheal ground-
into flour in 1881 was 16,500,000
bushels, b?ing 2,500s000 bushels more
than the entire receipt-at ChicaEfO'in
that year. The foreign- export of
flour from Minneapolis'befran in 1S78
with 109,183 barrels, and amounted
in 1881 to 1,181,324 barrels. The
products of the manufacturers for
L881- were valued at' $ls5,O0f,0OO.
