Heart Disease not so Fatal.
When an individual is reported
to have died ot disease of the heart,
we are in the habit of regarding
it is an inevitable event, as some
thing which could not have been
seen or prevented, and it is too
much the habit, when persons sud
denly fall down dead, to report the
heart as the cause. This silences
all inquiry and investigation, and
saves the trouble of a post mortem
A true report would have' a ten
dency to save many lives. It is
! through a report of the disease of
the heart that many an opium
eater is led off into the grave that
covers at once his follv and his
crime; the brandy-drinker, too, fre
quentiy slides arouna trie corner
thus, and is heard of no more; in
short, this report of disease of the
heart is the mantle of charitv
which the polite coroner and sym
pathetic physician throw around
the graves of generous people. At
a scientific Congress at Strasburg
it was reported that of thirty six
persons that had suddenly died, an
immediate and faithful post mortem
showed that only two persons had
any heart affections whatever ono
sudden death only in thirty-three
from disease of the heart. Nine
out of sixty died of apoplexy one
out of ever seven, while forty-six
died of long affection, half of them
from congestion of the lungs, that
is, the lungs were so full of blood
they could not work. It is then,
of practical iuterest to know some
of the causes of congestion of the
lungs; these are cold feet, tight
shoes, light clothing, costive bowels,
sitting still until chilled through
after having warmed up by hard
labor or a long, hasty walk. Hall's

of mashed potatoes, one-half a cup of
flour and half a teacup of sweet milk,
two well-beaten eggs, and a little
salt; mix well together, shape them
small nd drop them into hot lard,
or roll them into little balls and fry
them in a wire basket in boiling lard.
Dessert. An inexpensive dessert
is made of one quart ot sweet milk,
two-thirds ot a cup of uncooked
rice, and a little salt. Put this iu
tea or coffee cups, set them in the
steamer over a kettle of boiling water.
Let it cook until the rice is almost
like jelly. When cold turn it out of
the cup. Serve with sugar and
cream or with pudding sauce.
Orange Sauce. For puddings is
made of one quarter of a pound of
white sugar, half a pint of water, the
juice of one large orange; cut the
nue off very thin, so that none of
the thick bitter while skin will be
cut off with it; add this to the other
and boil for five or six minutes; strain,
aud, it you choose, add a cup ot white
or cherry winv. s
Rhubarb Jklly. Take some ihu
barb, wipe it with a clean, wet cloth,
peel it and cut it into pieces an inch
long. To each pound of rhubarb
put three-quarters of a pound of
white sugar. Put it in to boil tor
about ten minutes, or until the juice
is well drawn. Strain the juice into
a preserving pan, let it boil quickly
until it clings to the spoon, skim it
and put into jam pots or moulds.
The quickest way to know if it will
set is to drop a little on a plate to
cool.
Puff Paste. Mix one pound of
flour, one ounce of butter and the
juice of one lemon into a firm paste
with ice-cold water. Let it stand
an hour. Roll it out thin and lay
over it one pound of butter in thin
slices, fold over the paste from each
side, roll it up into a ball, and roll
out quarter of an inch in thickness
Fold in three layers and lengthwise
in three folds. Let it lie half an
hour. Repeat the operation, let it
lie ten minutes and repeat the rolling.
When used for pies and tarts, rub
over the top with a feather dipped
into sweet milk.
Another Wrinkle in Bread.
In the first place the yeast should be
good and tree from lumps. After our
sponge is very light and has been
stirred down two or three times we
make up the bread dough, work it a
pretty long time and knead in as
much flour as it will tike. After it
has risen we knead it over and let it

A party of pleasure seekers, who
were in Summit Prairie, last week
killed two cougars, about a dozen
deer and antelope, and caught near
ly one thousand fish.
Messrs. Nichols and Leonard,
with their families, returned from
Summit Prairie. The Dr. succeeded
in killing two deer, and the rest of
the party caught over 600 trout.
Mr. Breyman started for Dayton
on last Saturday, he having received
word of the sickness of one of his
children at that place. On arriving
at The Dalles he received word that
his child was recovering. Mr. Brey
man in company with Messrs. Ed
and Jjlifl Sommerville returned to
this place on Thursday last.

J. R. Daniel's son, aged about
fifteen years, was kicked in the face
by a vicious horse yesterday morn
ing, breaking the lower jaw.
Major Truax, says the Walla
Walla Union, has 800 acres of grain
on his Dead in an farm that will aver
age 15 bushels to the acre, although
a couple of weeks ago he thought
that the entire tract would not yield
2,000 bushels.
Two large saw logs, one of tbein
scaling 600 feet, ran over a workman
named Louis Hansen, at the Blue
Mountain saw mill on Monday. The
accident occurred by the men at
tempting to roll the logs from the
upper end of the yard to the mill,
and as they were piled up three aud
four logs high and the ground slopes
toward the mill, the top logs came
with more speed than Louis antici
pated, who tried to get out of the
way but was overtaken, caught by
the heel, thrown on his face aud the
two logs passed over him, breaking
the bones in his foot and injuring
liin to a considerable extent, blood
flowing freely from his ears, nose.and
mouth. Ilia recovery is hoped for.

A camp meeting is in progress at
Sodaville and will continue over
next Sunday. Last Sabbath, we are
informed, there were over 2,000 peo'
pie there, and next Sabbath, it is an
ticipated, the crowd will be still
larger.
Last Thursday afternoon at four
o'clock the imposing ceremony of
laying the corner stone of the First
Presbyterian church ot Albany, was
performed, It the cite of the new
church, on the corner of Broadalbin
and Fifth streets. The exercises are
spoken of as being very interesting.
They were conducted by Revs. I. H.
and E. N. Condi t.
The brick work of the lower story
of the Odd Fellows building at Har-
risburg is completed and on Wednes
day and Thursday the iron columns
and heavy iron lintels of the- front
were placed in position, ana- tne

A pretty Well' founded7 rumor
is in circulation that we are to have
a saw mill fa Harrisburg. Arrange
ments have been made for the use of

other day, after a run of about three
weeks.
Lance & Duflield, who are exten
sively engaged in mining operations
on Foots creek, are cleaning up with
excellent results. They brought a
large amount of gold-dust to town
Saturday last.
The copper mines situated in the
vicinity of Waldo, Josephine county
have been bonded to a company ot
Boston capitalists for $50,000. An
expert in their interest has examined
the deposits and is favorably im
pressed with them.
