LEARff ABOUT THE FILSE.
Every person should know how to
ascertain the stato of the raise in
liealth; then, by comparing it when he
5s ailing, he may have some idea of
the urgency of his case. Parents
should know'the health pulse of each
child, as now and then a person is
born with a peculiarly slow or fast
pulse, and the very case in hand may
be of that peculiarity. An infant's
pulse is 140; a child of 1 about 80,
and from 20 to 60 years is 70 beats a
minute; declining id 60 at four score.
A healthy grown person's pulse beats
TO times a minute. There may be
good health clown to 60, but if the
pulse always exceeds TO there is a dis
ease, the machine is working itself
out; there is a lever or inflamation
somewhere; and the body is feeding
on itself; as in consumption, when the
pulse is quik, that is over TO, grad.
ually increasing with decreased
chances of cure, until it reaches 110 to
120, when death comes before many
days When the pulse is over 70 for
months, and there is a slight cough,
the lungs are affected. There are,
however, peculiar constitutions in
which the pnlse may be over TO in
health.
The Mountain Road.
Jason Wheeler returned from the
"bunch grass country" last Monday,
coming over the mountains on the
Lebanon road, says the Albany
toemoerat. He says there is yet
aTfcyit thirteen miles of suow on the
roacr; ' commences near Hackle-man'-s
Pass, at the top of the Seven
Mile Hill and runs about five miles
towards the Lakes. It commences
again near the foot of Sand Mountain
and runs over that mountain for a
distance of about eight miles to the
vicinity of Crater Springs: In some
places it is yet nine or ten feet deep,
but is melting away rapidly. Mr.
Gilliland is at work on the road, an'l
is clearing away fallen timber and
patting it in good shape. Mr.
Wheeler met Mr. Batnford near Fish
Lake last Sabbath wiih a small drove
of cattl?, and he was getting through
without much trouble. Mr. Wheeler
eays horseman and stock can get over
now without difficulty, but would
not advise anyone to undertake to
cross with teams until about the
25th of this month.
Alfalfa. S
. A vine grower of Caliiorria offered
within a few days $S00 in gold for a
hundred tons of altalfa hay, to be de
livered during: season. As an
acre of Alfalfa, properly irrigated
and occasionly fertilizod, will yield
an average ot a ton and a half of hay
at a cutting, and five cuttings in a
season, it is no difficult matter to
determine that it is an exceedingly
valuable crop, and that it should be
more extensively planted. At $8
per ton, the price offered above, and
there is no winter but that it is worth
more, an acre of alfalfa will yield an
average of $60 per annum. As the
land in any of the colonies, with
water, can be purchased at 50 per
acre, it will be seen that a farmer can
pay for his land in one season. That
we do not overestimate the yield per
acre of this valuable forage plant,
everyone who has had experience in
its culture can testify. Wc know of
parties who enriched their alfalfa
fields by liberal top-dressing, who
secure 1 over twelve tons of hay per
acre in a single season. Fresno

Sheep.
Last Sabbath morning 24,000 head
of sheep passed through the city on
the Burnt river road, en route for
Cheyenne. They were5 all fine, fat
wethers, had just been shorn, mak
ing them look nearly as bare as the
heads of Geo. Clark and Pat Camp
bell. They belonged to a Mr.
Homer, and were purchased in Uma
tilla county, and yet we are told that
they are scarcely missed in that
county. A stream of water between
three and four yards wide rnns past
the Reveille office. When the van
guard came to this little stream
they halted, obstinately refusing to
cross over. The sheep in the rear
keep, marching up until the road
was full, every space being occupied
by a sheep. It was a pretty sight.
The herders, by riding in amongst
them, finally succeeded in making
those in front jump across; and for
about a half hour the air was full of
sheep almost every sheep in the
jand leaping over the little stream

It is really wonderful how the price

Gen. Torbet, ot cavaly fame, who
was lost at sea last year with the ill

II. B. Nichols on his ranch, a short
distance from Grass Valley, Cal.,
still holds out, nicely. The stringers
from which the rich rock is taken
were found while ground sluicing,
and they are several in number, all
pitching toward each other, so that

of 100 feet or less they will come to
gether and form a ledge. From the 1
first pookct about $500 was taken;
the second-pocket about $140, and
