Last Wednesday a couple of young men
were arnsied on a charge preferred before
Recorder Sawtelle by some Indians charged
with assault and a general difficulty with
the led skins. On examination they were
discharged by the Recorder for want of
sufficient evidence.
Cows and Gardens.
The people of Corvallis are now com
mencing to make gardens and the marshal
informs us that partial having cows running
at large hail better look after them carefully
during forbidden hours or it will become
his duty to take charge of all such animals
when found at lar.- contrary to the pro
visions of the city ordinance.

Mr. Win. M. Hoa', the general manager

the iarge wharf already put up at the new
town of Ya-juina. and has become convinced
that it will be insufficient to meet the re
quirements of the co.npany and has already
urdere I an aditional one hundred feet to be
built 'making inclusive of approaches about
four hundred feet in length.

The citizens of Albany and vicinity re
ccntly met for the purpose of t iking into
consideration the proposition for her citizens
to raise a sufficient sura to induce the O.
P. R. R. Co. to build a double bridge across
the Willamettee river at that place. A
committee of seven was appointed to confer
with the company to ascertain their terms
which would be required by the company.
A committee of five was al o appointed to
raise $20,000 for that purpose.

Met at 1 o'clock P. M. on last Tuesday
and was called to order by Hon. A. M.
Vitbam. Judae C. E. Moore was then
elected chairman, M. S. Woodcock Secre
tary and 1''. A. Vincent assistant Secretary.
On motions regularly made it was ordered
by the convention that the twelve delegates
'.o the county Convention be balloted for at
the same time. That a hat be placed on
the stand and each voter step forward and
deposit his ballot therein, also that the
twelve persons receiving the highest num
ber of votes be declared the delegates to the
county Conventin. Messrs- 3. R. Baldwin
and M. L. Noftsger were appointed tellers.
The ballot was then taken which resulted
in one hundred and sixteen votes being cast
and the e'ection of tbe following named
delegates to the county Convention '. A

tion, for the nomination of county officers
and the selection of delegates to the State

He has lately been engaged in defending
some parties in some criminal business.
Persons understanding the logging bus
iness might do well to run a lot of good logs
to Corvallis, as the demand for lumber will
no doubt be far in excess of the supply of
logs. Why does not some cnterpising per
son go to the McKeuzie where timber is
plenty and the quality better than most any
other place ? A supply of logs from there
would be well rewarded and appreciated
here.

white men, carpenters, pile drivers, China
men, men potting in cribbing and bulk
heads; to where he can see idles of castings
and other material necessary to build railroad
cirs, ear wheels, sheds piled with seasoned
c ir lumber, sheds piled with all kinds of
railroad supplies including hay, grain, chop
feed and bran, buildings containing all
kinds of tools necessary to the construction
of a railroad, magazines full of powder; we
will show him several saw mills all running,
some full and some double time, ware
houses in course of construction, aiid in our
rambles we will introduce him to Portland
and San Francisco men now here securing
business property.
The schooner "Sea Foam" is up the river
at Boon's Point taking on cargo; she wiil
also stop on her way down to Oysterville
and take on a large quantity of oysters for
the San Francisco market.
Parties having any doubt about there
being a spring run of salmon in the Yaquina
river can solve that doubt now by catching
some. Several iine salmon have been seen
within the last few days.
There has been no rain for some time;
everything is looking fresh. A great many
of the trees up the river are coming out in
full leaf. Men fad teams are now patting
in full tine on the railroad Things are
booming.
Fresh beef is scarce. Butter is worth
seventy five cents per pound, the San Fran
cisco vessel brought in about 500 pounds,

record. The present law, as construed by
the interior department, requires oaths to
be made in person and iu the districts
wherein claims are situated.

London, April 3. The Spanish steamer
Yruac Bat, Capt. Ugarte, from Liverpool
for Porto Rico, eaiae i collision with the
Royal Mail Company's steamer Douro,
from Brazil, off the coast of Finistere,
Spain, on Saturday. Both steamers were
sunk. The steamer Hidalgo, rescued 17
ersons fimn the Douro ami 67 from the
Yruac Bit, and landed them at Corona.
Thirty o.f the crew el the Yriiac Bat, in
cluding the captain ami pilot were drowned,
aiid 33 of the Douro's passengers saved.
The number of drowned '8 unknown.
The Obxfrvc-r says: We are authorized
to state that the request of President Ar
thur to the secretary of state for the home
department has respited Dr. Lamaon until
the 19th inst., pending the arrival of evi
dence from, America.
St. Petersburg. April 3. The two assas
sins of Gen. Streinikoff were not hanged.
The czar did issue an order for their imme-
iate execution, bnt countermanded it.
The murdei-bis received copies of the in
dictment against them yesterday, anil a
council of war met at Odessa last evening
to try them. Sentence of death was pro
nounced at midnight. The body of Geu.
Streinkoff was buried this morning with
full military honors.

Chicago, April 4. Tim-'.i Little Rock:
News has been received here . of the execu
tion of two Indian murderers by the name
of Lillie and Haney at Ocnolgee, in tie Indi
an nation. The condemned men were shot
dead in the presence of 50 to 70 persons, at
sunset. Spectators were nearly all Indians,
mainly friends of prisoners. There was no
disturbance, scarcely a word being spoken
from the time the criminals were led from
jail until the sharp report of rilles announc
ed their doom had been sealed aud the law
vindicated.
Indianapolis, April 4- Last night a mob
of eight hundred at Kokomo broke down
the jail doors and took Long alias Johnson,
who raped a little girl, and in the presence
of 1000 people hanged him from a bridge.
A clerayman present offered prayer. Long
confessed stealing but denied the rape.

The Prineville A'ttes gives a Keart-rendin
account of the death by drowning of a man
named William McBiide. Mr. McBiide,
with his wife and two children, left town
iu a two-horse wagon, fur Sam Newborn's
ranch, having arranged to take charge
there. In attempting ti cross the river at
the ford just above the mouth of Bade
creek, it seeras the horses became unruJy,
aud McBriile cot into the river to unhitch
them, the water at the ford being not
more than three feet de'-p, but deepening
below. Whether McBiide was injured-by-one
of the horses, or Was taken with cramps,
is not known, but he wa3 carried under in
sight and almost within reach of hU terror
stricken wife and children, whose cries for
help was heard by a 3heep-her ler about a
mile distant. He, with others, repaired to
the spot and without much difficulty res
cued the team and family, who are being
kindly cared for at the home of Riley
Hhodes. Mr. Havener pocured a boat aud
hooks, and every efj&'rt will be made to
recover the body of the unfortunate man.
Deceased came here last fall, from the Wil
lamette, hi3 father being a farmer near
Shedd's station, Linn county. He was 2S
years of age and a man of integrity and
worth.

derstand their profession. The "Mary
Hall" hails from the new town of Yaqnina.

Ian 1 to-day for Newport After the "Mary
Hall" is inspected she will make daily trips
from Newport to Elk City and return. The
Oueatta mills under the management of
Allen Parker are running at full speed and
turning but Jots of lumber. He finds no
trouble in getting ready sale for all the
lumber he can saw; tile railroad cbmpany
takes most of it. Mr. Stratford is improv
ing as rapidly as could be expected and we
hope will soon be able to attend to business

been hanging about the station for the past
two weeks, was the nerson who shot aud
killed James. Ford left for the city about
a week ago aud joined James in the vicinity
of St. Louis, remainipg with him until an
opportunity to kill htm was found. The
police learned that Ford, who is said to be
a memW of tlie gag. was under control
of Craig, and was being used as an instru
ment for James' destruction. Ford is
about 22 yean old and looked like a ver
dant youth from the country. In appear
ance he is a mere boy. and is the last person
in the world t j be taken as the slayer of
an outlaw.
Seward. Neb.. April 3. A. C. Patrick
shot his wife through the heart last night, j
then fired at each ot ins two sons, sngntiy
wounding one of them. Patrick had
trouble with his wife in the east, and she
came here with her sons and engaged in
fanning. He followed, and for some time
has been loafing around town and drinking
whisky. The murder was evidently pre
meditated. Patrick escaped.
Portland, Me., April 3. The land league

Lowell, and demand his recall. The presi
dent was also requested to demand immedi
ate trial or release of all Americans now
eonfined in British dungeons.

a result Secretary Hunt telegraphed Lieut.
H irbet authorizing expenditure of 10,000
ronhlea in getting the most desirable vessel
for the search.
