ity perhaps than any other public
man. When he arose in front of the
Beat where he had so long presided
as speaker of the House, and stood
before that audience most of whom
were his personal acquaintances and
friends, seldom has there existed

sympathy as was wrought fro-l the

dience. That there were a few in
the audience who were not friendly
to the orator, or at least estranged

lion of the most unusual statements
which follow are, first, gratitude tor
the tact that I have been saved from
a most hrtrrible death, and, secondly,
a desire to warn all wno read this
statement against some of the most
deceptive influences by which they
have ever been surrounded. It is a
fuel that to-day thousands of people
are within a foot ot the grave and
i hey do not know it. To tell howl
was caught away from just the po
sition and to warn others against
ncaiing it, are my obji-cts in this
communication.
On the first day of June 1881, I

a fe years previous, any one had
told me that I was to be brought so
low, and by so terrible a disease, I
should have scoffed at the idea. I

conversation lie mentioned a remedy
of which I had heard much but had

The General did not hesitate to ejt

the Pacific coast uoith of San Fian
ciaco. The route to Japan naturally
starts from the coast at a i int
nearly as far north as Paget Sound
and the current takes sailiii"; vessels
in that course, while steamships also

over which it has been organized to
build in Oregon are two in number,
both with Portland for an objective
point. Th" southern route leaves
the Union Pacific's Oregon main line
at Che junction of Malheur river with
the Snake, on tlie eastern boundary
of Oregon. It runs due west to the
center of the State. From this point
to the mouth of the Sanliam river
either one or two ioute. is proposed
tbroagfa the Cascade range, the low
er following the Willamette river
and the upper the Sanliam to Salem,
from which point there is a single
route laid out north to Portland
