"THE BLIND MAN ELOQUENT."
The thousands of people in this country
who have been thrilled with the burning
eloquence of Rev. W. H. Milburn, known
wherever the English language is spoken as
"The Blind Man Eloquent," will be pleased
to know that he has oonsenterl to remain in
the lecture field one more season, and that
he will soon visit our own city and afford
onr people an opportunity of hearing the
man of whom the London Christian World
remarked: "As an orator, both in the pul
pit and on the platform as a preacher and
lecturer he is superior to any we ever
heard."
Dr. Milburn has jnst given a series of
lectures to large and delighted audiences in
San FranciBco, and sailed yesterday, August
26th, for Portland, where ho has been se
cured by the Young Men's Christian Asso
ciation to deliver a course of lectures, after
which he will lecture at the principal cities
in the Valley and in W. T.
Few men have established a reputation
equal to Dr. Milbum's as an instructive, en
tertaining and finished speaker. "The voice
of this man," says the Occident of San Fran
cisco, is a marvel of richness and fullness.
His last lecture, on the Life and Character
of Aaron Burr, produced a profound impres
sion upon the deeply interested auditors on
the occasion of its delivery one week ago.
It is a master-piece." The London Times
says of him : "As an orator of the foremost
rank he may well challenge comparison
with and stand by the side of the first that
have appeared in this country within this
generation." The Manchester Guardian
speaks as follows : "In listening to him we
felt that the foremost men in Parliament, at
the bar and in the pulpit, might well sit as
charmed learners at his feet in the school of
eloquence." The New York World pays
him the following glowing tribute : ''From
London to San Francisoo, from Canada to
the Gulf of Mexico, Mr. Milburn is known
,as a genuine and genial orator, who speaks
none the less charmingly that, like Homer
and Milton, his physical calamity shuts him
more closely than other men are shut within
the circle of his own memories, fancies, feel
ings and thoughts. He has traveled wisely
as well as widely, and brings to the platform
the ripe fruits of a real and varied culture."
He may be expected here about Thursday
evening of the coming week. Farther no
tice of this, however, will be given.
For the Bay. Hon M. C. George, M.
C, was in CorvaUis on Tuesday on his way
to the Yaquina Bay. He started from Cor
vaUis Wednesday morning accompanied
from this city by Jas. A. Yantis of the
Gazette and Dr. H. W. Vincent. They
will be absent about a week, during which
time Mr. George will visit the Silets Reser
vation and all other parts of the Yaquina
country in order to thoroughly familiarize
himself with the wants of that part of the
State in view of future legislation in Con

Settled. A contemporary says : "The
long disputed Wheeler claim to a large por
tion of the real state of East Portlund, in
which Mrs. Wheeler claimed a Ufe dower,
js at last settled by the death of Mrs.
Wheeler, which happened at Santa Rosa,
Cal., on August 3d, death resulting from
hemorrhage of the lungs."
It will be remembered that Mrs. Wheelfir
was the mother of W. A. Wheeler, who was
for several years editor of the Benton Dem
ocrat of this city.
The Price of Wheat. The bountiful
harvest in both this country and Europe
will no doubt cause wheat to rule very low
this season, but this will not lessen die de

New .Cistern. Workmen are now busy
in constructing a new cistern at southwest
corner of the Court House block. This is a
much needed improvement, as heretofore
the Court House and the buildings of the
State Agricultural Society were entirely un
protected in case of fire, there being no
other cistern anywhere in reach of .either
building.
Glass Ball Shooting. The following is
the score of the CorvaUis Sporting Club
tor the week : On Monday, out of 30 balls
shot at, Baker broke 12 Kiger 13; Buford
16; Albrecht 11; Gerhard 4. Tuesday, Bu
ford broke 14 ; Baker 10; Gerhard 3.

A Candidate. Miss Nora Simpson,
daughter of Hon. Ben. Simpson, will be a
candidate for a clerkship in the Honse at
fchp coming session of the Legislature.
Miss Clara Stock is visiting friends in

Geo. L. Crane, of the Summit, was te the

Forest Grove has the honor of shipping
the first wheat bv the W. O. R. R. this
year. Three car loads were shipped from
that place last Friday.
C. U. Barlow, of Walla Walla, W. T.,
has been in the city for several days past.
Casius looks as though change of climate
had agreed with him.
The feelings of the small boy can be
better imagined than described after he has
spent half an hour crawling under a gospel
tent to find it is not a circus.
S. G. McCann, a graduate of the Agricul
tural College, left CorvaUis Wednesday to
attend Vanilerbilt University, Nashville,
Tenn. , and will be absent two years.
The fourth quarterly mef-tin? of the M.
E. Church South wiU be held at the College
Chapel, commencing next Saturday evening
at 7:30 o'clock. The public are invited.

Bio Yield. Onr farmers are in good
spirits over the outcome of grain in this
section, so far as harvest has progressed.
Without exception the report comes that
the yield is exceeding by far aU calculations
hswetofore made. Harvest is well under
vy, with the prospect of exceUeut weather
to the end, and though we see no reason to
predict tap top prices for the crop of trus
season, we notice that the market ia open
ing at a very reasonable figure.
Newspaper Dibbctoby. A very hand
somely printed and bound copy of the
"American Newspaper Directory" for 1880,
issued by Geo. P. Rowell A Co. , has been
received at this office. The directory con
tains 1044 Dacres. and the contents are ob
tained from the most reliable sources and
carefuUy compiled.
None to Farmers. "Didn't I told you
so!" The low water has caused the boats to
stop running to CorvaUis, thereupon the
railroad has put freights up to three or four
dollars per ton. Freights on the river wiU
be one dollar per ton next winter.

will start on their trip for she Pacific Coast.
It is almost certain that they will visit
Oregon.
Name Change. The name of the Port
land Bee has been changed to that of the
Portland Bulletin. The paper of late pre
sents a better appearance than formerly.

ED. Gazette: The "Kate and Anna,"
Capt. Charles Lntjens, arrived on the 16th,
with freight for Siletz Agency and a large
stock of goods for Sam. Case. There, was
also as passengers U. S. Engineer J. S.
Polhernas, and assistant, J. Bald, and party,
detailed to survey Yaquina bar and determ
ine the kind of improvement required. The
"Kate and Anna" was used several days
this week, and was relieved by the steamer
"Quickstep," Capts. Woods & Gray. This
vessel ;s a trim; craft, with good propeUing
power, and will be just the thing for work
on the bar. The "Quickstep" arrived on
the 21st, 10 hours from Astoria. Engineer
Polhernus goes to work like a man thorough
in his profession, and determined to push
the survey to an early completion. Of
course the season is well advanced, and the
time for heavy seas and. fogs is here, and
this may retard the work.
Hon. M. C. George is expected to deliver
a political speech at Newport on the 28th,
aud we predict for him a large audience.
The Garfield and Arthur club will organ
ize on the 24th.
The "Kate and Anna" sailed for Portland
on the 23d.
