Spicidk. From a letter from J. M. Laf
ferty at Junction City, we learn the follow
ing particulars of the suicide of Nate Gris
wold, a saloon keeper of that city: The de
ceased had been addicted to the too frequent
use of strong drink, and for two or three
days before his death had shown signs of
insauity, and on the morning of the 16th,
about 2 o'clock, he committed the fatal deed
by cutting his throat with a razor, almost
severing the head from the body. A coro
ners inquest was held and a verdict rendered
in accordance with the facts above stated.
The remains were taken chnrce of by the
X, O. O. F. and burried that afternoon atthe
cemetery below Harrisburg. The deceased
leaves a wife and one child and two sisters
to mourn his untimely death.
School Exebcises. Miss Viola Bagley,
teacher of the school at Stanton school
house, gave an exhibition, and the district
prepared a pic nic dinner on the 13th. The
writer was expected to assist in making the
affair pleasant, and regrets very much his
inability to meet the people of that enter
prising district. Those who attended say
the exhibition was a succes ; every scholar
displayed excellent training, and the whole
programme reflected much credit on the
teacher. The directors have made applica
tion for Miss Bagley's services for another
term; this is a proper recognition of merit.
The dinner was thoroughly enjoyed, and
just such a dinner and good time as the
people of Ollala understand getting up, and
spirit of genuine good reeling prevailed.
Takes a Chair. Rev. Ladru Royal,
well known among educators of the State,
lias recently been appointed to one of the
chairs in the Ashland college, Jackson
county. Mr. Royal will fill the position uf
professor of ancient languages in that insti
tution. Studies will be resumed at Ashland
College on September 1st. Oregonian.
The people of Corvallis will not soon
forget Mr. Royal, as the able and efficient
principal of the north district public school
in this city last year, and regret to loose his
valuable services,
The Courts. - The case of the State of
Oregon vs. W. A. Fuller, charged with
forgery of a wheat receipt, was examined
before Justice Wrenn on l.ast Tuesday. The
State appearing by T. C Alexander and H.
VV. Keesee, and the defendant in person, as
well as by his counsel, Messrs. Kelsay and
Burnett. After examination of the wit
nesses and argument of counsel, the defend
ant was held to answer the charge before
the grand jury of the next Circuit Ccnrt,
with bail fixed at 9300. In default of which
the defendant was committed to the county
jail.
Satan in Societt. This wonderful book,
which is being so much talked of throughout
California and in Portland, will be offered
to the people of Corvallis and vicinity, by
Mr. Jos. L. Clark, agent, iu a few days. It
is sold only by subscription, price The
Portland Uregoniau says it ought to be in
the bauds of every man and woman in
America. Thousands of copies have been
sold in the East, and hundreds have been
sold in Portland during the past four weeks.
Heaves Help Us ! Dr. Tanner says he
has been offered $2,700 to deliver ten lec
tures in California, and that he thinks
favorably of the offer, as he has long been
anxious to visit the Pacific Coast. For
.gracious sake let some manager offer him at
least aomple of bits more and keep him in
the East we can get along so well without
him or his lectures. Albany Register.
Fire at Portland. A fire occurred at
Portland last Tuesday morning that was the
most disastrous that has visited that city
daring the present year. It destroyed all
the buildings on the block bounded by
Front, Water, Market and Mill streets,
except three ; the loss is estimated at $32,
000; insurance, $12,500.
Glass Ball Shooting. The members of
the Benton County Sporting Club are prac
ticing glass ball shooting, and on last Mon
day they shot with the following result: Gut
of 20 baHs Albrecht broke 17, Baker 8, Col
mer 13 and Buford 9; on Wednesday, out
of 20, Baker broke 16, Job 13 and Buford
15.
Fink Plums. Mr. C. L. Bennett placed
cat our table some very fine specin.ens of
plums raised on the farm of Mr. E. Allen,
in this county. They are the peach plum
variety and certainly very fine in appear
ance and variety, two measuring 7 inches
each in circumference.

Wednesday.
Charlie Kohn, of San Francisco, was in
town this week.
Dr. H. W. Vincent started for the Bay
yesterday morning.
Miss Mary Goldson, of Albany, is visiting
friends in this city.
Jacob Conser, of Jefferson, was in the
city the first of the week.
Prof. A. L. Johnson, of Forest Grove, is
registered at the Vincent House.
Mr. W. F. Dixon has gone to Elk City
where he will reside in the future.
Mr. M. Jacobs and wife and daughter Eda
started for San Francisco this morning.
Hon. F. M. Wadsworth was in the city
the first of the week, and paid us a friendly
call.
Dick Warren, shot by Geo. Goodman at
Brownsville, is still living and likely to re
cover.
Mr. H. De Laconnt and wife, of England,
are visiting in Corvallis, and stopping at the
V incent House.
L. G. Kline, of the firm of L. Kline kCo.,
started to San Francisco this morning on
business for the firm.
A number of new residences that have
been building this summer are now almost
ready for occupancy.
Hon F. M. Wadsworth has the thanks of
the Gazette office for a bountiful supply of
excellent black berries.
Col. T. H. Cann, for many years a resi
dent of Salem, contemplates moving perma
nently to Seattle, W. T.
R. L. Barns, of the Albany Herald, cast
the shadow of his handsome form into our
sanctum on last Wednesday.
Senator Slater has our thanks for valua
ble public documents, including a report of
the entrance of Yaquina Bay.
Mr. E. E. Cooper and wife, nee Miss Fan
nie Hamilton, of Ainsworth, W. T., are
visiting friends in this city.
Kit Abbey is out from the Bay. He re
ports every thing in a flourishing condition
in that part of the county.
J. H. Boyd and family, A. H. Morgan, of
internal revenue service, of Portland, are
stopping at the Ocean House.
Rev. W. C. Chapman started to Eugene
City Wednesday to attend Honfereuce. He
went by way of Monroe, horseback.
The quarterly conference of the United
Brethren church will convene at Philomath
to-morrow, Bishop Castle, presiding.
Thomas Graham and wife went to Elk
City last week on a pleasure excursion.
Tom pronounces the fishing "tiptop."
Mr. H. E. Harris, who has been danger
ously sick for the past week, is better,
though not yet able to be out of his room.
Hon. D. G. Clark, Mayor of Albany, ac
companied by his family, passed through
Corvallis yesterday en route for the Yaquina
Bay.
Mr. Allen, the contractor has almost com
pleted the walling and cementing of the
cistern at the intersection of Madison and
Second streets. "
Geo. W. Sill, of Albany, has been in
town several times during the week. He is
looking after business for the Corvallis
Fruit Company.
Mr. Becker, editor of the Philomath Cru
cible, accompanied by his wife, started for
an exteided visit to Washington Territory
last Wednesday.

Miss Ella Beck and Henrietta Waldman
of Portlaud, and Misses Amelia and Esther

A large number of our citizens went to
Albany last Sunday to attend the pic nic
given by the Port'and excursionists. They
report the excursion a grand success.
Rev. H. K. Hiues, one of the old pioneer
ministers at Uregon. has been tendered the
position of editor of the Pacific Christian
Advocate, and we understand has signified
his acceptance.
Mr. M. H. Parker has accepted the prin
ci pal ship of the public school at Philomath"
for the coming year. The people of Philo
math are fortunate in securing his valuable
services.
Work is now rapidly progressing on the
brick buildings of Jacobs &. Neugass and W.
B. Hamilton & Co., on Second street. These
buildings, when completed, will be the
finest in the city,
Bishop J. W. Wiley, of the Methodist
Episcopal Church, has arrived in Oregon,
and will preside over the annual conference
of that church at Eugene City. He resides
in Cincinnatti, Ohio.
Mr. J. G. Knoltner, an old resident of
this county, but latterly of Eastern Oregon,
paid our office a visit on Wednesday. Mr.
K. is 84 years old and still in good health,
having just returned from a visit to the
Eastern States. ,

The entertainment given at Hamiltons
Opera House last Friday evening bv Ver-

Miss Eva Burbank, daughter of Hon. A.
R. Burbank. of Lafayette, was drowned at
Ilwaco beach on the 15th inst., while out
bathing. The Oregonian of the 17th pays
this beautiful tribute to her memory:
''Amiable, she won all; intelligent, she
charmed all ; fervent, she loved all ; and,
alas, dead, she saddened all."

Rev. Mr. Smith preached at the Episcopal
Church in this city last Sunday morning and
evening, and will hold service at the same
place next Sunday at the same hours. Mr.
S- is a former member of the press, having
been editor of the "American Churchman,"
Tiublished in Chicago, and earlier in life on
the editorial staff of the "Chicago Tribune."
Air. smith is a very pleasing gentleman, and
we are told an able and forcible speaker,
and we hope will decide to remain with us.
Bob Barnes, of the Albany Herald, is an
excellent horseman, but also has a most
Kind and generous heart He knew we
wanted an item, so yesterday, after bidding
all an affectionate forewell, he "dashed the
rowels in his steed," cast a last long linger
ing look over his left shoulder at the Vin
cent Hotel, where he had been feeding for a
few days past, and fell off. He was not
hurt, the horse stopped when he found him
self riderless, the stirrup strap was soon
mended, and Barns continued his journey
ifl safety. We are glad his life was spared,
but the local would have been more exciting
if the accident had been more serious.
