STATE AGRICULTURAL COLLEGE
Upon its educati advantaies, to
greater or less decree, depends the strength,
prosperity and perpetuity of every county,
State and Nation. It therefore liecnmes
and is the duty of every p.-.son who has the
good of his country at heart to look after
the educational systems rnd institutions of
his own immediate neighborhood first, anil
then, as oppor'nnily offers, those in tire
more remote disiriuts of his St.it e. By an
act of the I.e islafive Assembly, a Red in
18S8. the Agricultural College of the State
of Oregon was permanently located at Cor
valiis, and what was then Corvallis College,
under the care of the conference of the M.
E. Church South, was designated as the
Agricultural College of the State, upon the
said Corvallis College accepting certain con
ditions contained in said act of the legisla
ture, which conditions were dnly accepted.
At the time of the location of the Agricul
tural College, Corvallis College owned a
school building about equil to an ordinary
district school house and a patronage that
scarcely afforded a support for two profes
sors. The State Agricultural College now
owns a college building that is a credit to
the county in which it is situated, having
been built hy the people of Benton County,
a farm of 35 acres adjoining the city limits
of Corvallis, purchased by the ciiizens of
th ; same county, and supports four compe
tent professors, and still has several hun
dred dollars in the tre-isiiry. Of cmirse the
present prosperous condition of this institu
tion is owing to State aid in the past, but
the College to-day is a self-supporting insti
tution. The last Legislalnre made a nominal ap
propriation for the Agricultural College, but
the amount appropri itjd was less (lwu the
amount now in the ireasurv, so that for two
years the Col ege has actually accumu'ated ! conre into the warehouses.

Thus, one by one the companions of our
school days are passing away. We know
not what a day may bring forth; we meet in
the morn full of life ami happiness, but the
tolling bell in the evening tells of another
spirit that has flown to its Maker. Death
is a monarch, and marks whom he will for
his own.
A. idie, during hen life, has suffered a great
deal, having leen a victim to a spinal dis
ease from infancy. She knew not what it
was to be able to rim and play with others
of her acquaintance, but she bore all afilc
tions cheerfully. Beloved by ail who knew
her, her early death will be mourned by a
host of friends and relatives. She has
passed the portals of death, and entered
