IN MEMORIAM-
Last Sabbath evening a telegram was re
ceived in this city, announcing the death of
James Drake, in Portland. Mr. TVake was
born in the town of Ayr, in Ayrshire, Scot
land, on the 12th day of August. 1S12, in
which town he grew to miuhood. in his
22d year he came to Canada where he resid
ed for a numlier of years, and then com
menced a westward course, stopping for a
time in Michigan and Missouri, and finally
made a jiermaneiit abiding place in Oregon.
For the last twelve years he Jims resided in
this city, and is well known to us a'.l, and
his many generous and noble traits of char
acter will not be forgotten, and espscially
was he a fri -nl to the sijk or rue ly of the
neighborhood in which he lived.
Several months ago a cancer m-ide its ap
pearance in his throat an J growing rapidly
worse, he hail gone to Portland for medical
aid, but to no purpose. On last Sabbath
morning it 3 o'clock, surrounded by family
and friends, he breathed his last, a,id on
Monday evening at 5 oVdock he was laid to
rest, with the ceremonies of the Masonic
fraternity, to which be ha 1 been attached
from early manhood.
Comments on the life of Mr. Dr.ike from
onr pen would be useless, we :dl know him.
and we all mourn his death. He leaves a
widow who h-is shared his joys and sorrow
through the j mruey of life, from youth up
to a ripe old .je. she with a daughter and
on who have both been in illiiWI for a num
ber of years, constituted his family.

in Salem, August 25th, 18SO, and to con
tinue in session three days. Teachers and

the deliberations and discussions of the As
sociation, as matters of vital importance to
oar educational interests will lie submitted
for consideration. A programme of exer
cises will be prepared and published in due
time.

A New Deal. lu the absence of H. W.
Vincent and wife from the Vincent House.
Dr. Frank Vincent is occupying the posi
tion of " mine hoste," in the most pprov
etyle, while the culinary department under
the efficient management of Miss Buckie
Wrenn and Mrs. Campbell, has lost uone of
its former popularity. The guests are un
animous in their wishes that the Dr. and
wife may have a nice, long visit.
Runaway. Iist Wednesday evening,
Mr. John Smith started for a drive, accom
panied by his wife and Mrs. Jas. Taylor,
when just as they were turning to leave the
iiouse, the horses became f rightened, and in
their attempt to run, up set the buggy,
throwing its occupants to the ground. The
ladies escape 1 without injury, but Mr. S.
received several very painful bruses and
cuts about the face and head. The horses
then took a lively spin around town, and
wheu caught, the bugy was literally brok
en to pieces.

ing of Corvallis H. & L. Co., hell last Mou

cert given by Prof. John Kel ey an 1 wife,

Prof, is a good violinist a id singer, and on
that occasion every one present, seemed to
be well pleased with the ente.tain tent. We
hope Prof. Kelley will favor us with anoth
er concert before leaving town.

GRANGE RESOLUTIONS.
Whereas, Death has entered the portals
of our Grange and taken from our midst,
Sister Ann Murray, from the labor of the
faithful to the reward of the pure in heart;
and
Whereas, We, the brothers and sisters
of said Grange, deeply sensible of our great
loss, yet fully confiding in the mercy and
wisdom of the Divine Master above, bow
in bumble submission to the decree that none
can escape death.
Resolred, That in the death of Sister Ann
Murray, our Grange and the Order has lost
a valuable member and co-worker; the
Church a zealous and consistent Christian;
the community and society one of their
brightest ornaments; the family a devoted
wife and loving mother.
Resolved, That the members of this Grange
deeply sympathize with onr brother, R, N.
Murray, anil the family of the deceased,
and pray the Divine Master aluive, to sus
tain him and them in their sad bereavement.
Remleed, That a copy of these resolutions

Hayes and wite will visit the Pacific Coast
