BODY FOUND.
Several weeks ago the Gazette made
mention of a man by the name of Gilmore
being drowned in the Boonville slough, some
five miles above this city. The father and
brother of the deceased searched for two
weeks unavailingly, and were compelled to
gjge up the search.
On last Saturday afternoon two men, en
gaged in choppiong wood for Chas. Alexan
der, on what is known as Alexander's island,
were attracted by something floating in the
river, which, on investigation, proved to be
the body of the missing man. They imme
diately sent word to this city aud a party
of citizens went up and brought the body
to Corvallis. Sunday morning the the re
mains were taken to August Knight's on
dertaking establishment and enclosed in I
coffin. The father of the deceased was tel
egraphed and on Monday a brother of the
deceased came up and took charge of the
body. Tuesday morning the wife and a
ter of the deceased came up, and the re
mains were placed aboard the steamer Occi
dent and sent to Salem, where his folks
reside.
From a conversation with the brother of
the deceased, we learn that his name n
Vm. Gilmore, and was about 30 years old
at the time ot his death. He leaves a wife
and two children, and a large circle of rela
tives and friends in Salem, to mourn their
loss. He was well spoken of, and his i
timely death will be regretted by all who
knew him.
Excursion to Astoria. The best thing
we have yet he ird of, in the way of excur
sions, is that projected by the pastor of the
M. E. Church of this city. Arrangements
have been made to go by rail to Portland,
then by special boat to Astoria and to re
turn by the regular boats and cars any time
within three weeks. Cost of ticket for the
round trip, from Corvallis or Albany, only
$6 75, and proportionate rates from all rail
road stations as far south as Eugene. The
fort, the ocean beach, and other points of
interest, are easily reached from Astoria any
day, at trilling cost ; but here, too, a reduc
tion of one-half the re gular rates has been
secured for persons holding tickets for this
excursion. The time for starting will be
about July 20th.
Ladies' Brass Ban d. The Ladies' Band,
Albany, gave their promised entertainment
at the opera house last Wednesday evening.
The vocal and instrumental pieces were ex
cellent, as also were the recitations. The
band rendered some very fine music, which
showed that the ' ' fair ones " had paid strict
attention to their work, and were deter
mined to be second to none. Miss Nettie
riper is leader of the band. Ihere was a
large turn-out and everybody seemed well
pleased. Shooting Club. Some of the boys who
belong to the shooting club, and think they
are good shots, had better look a little out,
as on last Friday Mrs. R. Kiger, of this
city, who had never as much as seen a glass
ball thrown from a trap, took her husband's
shot gun and. broke f"ur out of five balls,
thrown from a Card's patent rotary trap.
This is pretty good as some of the best shots
in the club when they shot at their first five
balls from the same trap missed them all.
Fourth of July Ball. There will be
a grand ball given at Wright's Hall, Ne jv-
port, Oregon, on the evening of the 5th of
July, by A. Rosebrooks. Tickets, includ
ing supper, not over two dollars. Every
arrangement possible has been made to add
to the pleasure of the evening, the best of
music secured, and there will undoubtedly
be a large turn out.
Campmeeting. A campmeetine will be
held on Yaquina bay, commencing Thurs
day, July 15th, and will continue over the
following Sabbath. Everybody invited, but
come prepared to take care of yourselves.

affairs.
J. R. Lomer is now engaged in drawing
the plans for the new two-story brick soon
to be erected by Jacobs & Neugass and W.
B. Hamil'on & Co.
Preaching at the College Chapel Sunday
at 11 and 7 o'clock, by Rev. Mr. Davidson,
a Baptist Minister.
Dr. Wm. Biddle and wife, who went to
Oakland, Cal., about two weeks ago, return
ed last Friday evenine. They could not
stay away from Corvallis.
Messrs. Titus and Marple started for Ya
quina last Monday. Mr. Titus is returning
home, and Mr. Marp'e goes on account of
his hea th, which is very poor.
New and elegant stock of millinery goods
just received, at Mrs. E. A. Knight's, which
will be sold cheaper than they can be bought
any where else in the city.
Just we were going to press, yesterday,
fie telegraph announced that Gen. Hancock
bad received the Democratic nomination for
president. Garfield will walk over him.
Jas. A. Canthorn, our genial warehouse
man, returned from a short trip into the
Yakima country last Monday. He looks as
if there had been some sunshine up there.
The friends of "Stormy" Jordan will be
glad to learn that he has succeeded in get
ting his pension claim allowed by the gov
ment. He got $300 00 back penson and
$6 00 per month.
Jack Allphin, the chief house mover of
Oregon has all the business he can tend to
at present. Those wishing their houses
moved should leave their orders with him
for they come in turn.
Lost On the evening of the Ladies' con
cert, between or in the opera house and the
Vincent House, a heavy gold ring with a
yellow stone setting. The finder will suita
bly rewarded by leaving the same at this
office.

On last Monday afternoon Mrs. James A.
Cauthorn, of this city, and Miss Fanny
Odeneal. of Albany, gave us a pleasant call.
Miss canny had been spending a weeK witn
her relations and friends in this city, ajid
returned home last Tuesday morning.
Mrs. Vincent, of the Vincent House,
with her characteristic energy, went to work
last week and raised money to pay for a
month's house rent for the Sickles family,
who hid been turned out of house and home,
and both the old man and his wife being
sick, moved and "camping out" on the flat
above town. Mrs. Vincent hearing of their
condition, left her business affairs at home
and went to their rescue. Mrs. V. deserves
great credit for the manner in which she
has acted toward this f mily.
Campmeetig. The campmeeting at Rob
erts Bridge, in Linn county, under the di
rection of the M. E. church, was largely at
ienaea last Sunday ; it baa been in session
ever since, and will continue over the co
ing Sabbath. If the weather continues good
an immense crowd will be in attendence
next Sunday.
Change or Time. On last Monday morn
ing the new time table of the W. O. R. K.
went into effect, and since that time the
train has left Corvallis at 8:30 A. m., and ar
rived at 3 p.m. This is far more conveni
ent than the former arrangements, and wi
are glad to know that it will continue in the
future.
The State Fair. In another column ap
pears the advertisement of the Oregon State
Fair which commences on Tuesday, July
1st and closes July 8th, 1880. Ihe season
ef the year renders good weather almost
certainty, and a goed time may be epected
by all who attend.

Crops are late but look very well through
Umatilla county.
Curry county circuit court has a larger
spring docket than ever before.
Fonr hundred persons saw a baptism in
the Umatilla river above the agncy.
The Port Orford cedar mill will soon start
up again lumber demand increasing.
Umatilla county furnishes a Chinawoman,
gone crazy, an inmate for our asylum.
The campmeeting, at Milton, Umatilla
county, of the Adventists, is a success.
Through Yamhill there is greater acreage
in grain than usual and crops promise abun
dantly. Grain in Lake county is said to be better
than for many years past, the snow fall
helped it.
The Occident lately took up to Salem 100
tons Walla Walla wheat for Salem Flouring
Mills Co.
Colfax has raised $350 of the $500 re
quired of that place f-r the purchase of poles
to use in constructing the military telegraph
line.
Mr. Villard says Walla Walla will have
fifteen thousand inhabitants within the next
five years, aud he speaks from large exper
ience. Mr. Moody, of Eagle Creek, Union coun
ty, had his smoke house burned and lost
farm machinery, flour, meat, etc. Estimat
ed at $200.
Peter Swartz, trumpter of Company A.,
1st cavalry, was married -to Miss Lavina
Preston, of Walla Walia, -at the garrison
near that city, on Tuesday of last week.
Bernard, who was tried at Oregon City
for the murder of Mrs. Hager, is now un
der arrest at The Dalles, charged with steal
ing sundry articles from a hotel in that place'.
The Statesman says : Last Monday morn
ing at 0 o'clock, Judge Harding sentenced
Charley Piercy, George Cook and Frank
Cook to the penitentiary for three years
each. Steele was fined $50 aud costs for
stabbing Ferrell at Aumsville.
An uncle of Hager, the young man lately
murdered near Waitsburg, has written that
he will visit that locality shortly, take
charge of the financial affairs of deceased,
and make vigorous search for the perpetra
tor of the atrocious deed.
A handsome monument has been erected
over the grave of the late Dr. Marsh, presi
dent of faciiic University. It is of Italian
marble, both base and shaft, the whole be
ing eight fet high aud suitably inscribed.
It was fashioned under the direction of the
widow of the lamented founder of Pacific
University, and is a fitting testimonial to
his great and good deeds.
A. J. Thomas and wife, alleged murderers
of Bromfield and Amanda Shanks, have
been remanded to jail until the December
term of court. A territorial statue provid
ing that no person shall be put on trial on
indictment for murder until thirty days
after his arrest without his consent in open
court left Judge Wingard no alternative
but to postpone the trial. The prisoners
were returned to Walla Walla and placed
in jail, and will hereafter be confined in
separate cells.
