THE BE8ULT
The election is over and we can now only
quietly await the returns to see who are the
fortunate candidates. The state, so far as
heard from, is largely Republican, and al
though no news has been heard from East-
-n Oregon, there can be no doubt but that
the whole of I he Republican state ticket is
elected by a considerable majority.
In this judicial district, Judge Watson
(Rep) is elected by a handsome majority,
but the vote on district attorney is not re
ported, and from the best information we
can get, will be very close.
For joint senator Mr. Bensell (Rep) has
carried Benton county by 15. Polk county
not heard from. Mr. Clow, Democratic can
didate, resides in Polk aud the result is
doubtful, with chances in favor of Clow.
On the county ticket the Democrats have
elected Parker, representative, and the as
sessor, and it will perhaps take the official
count to decide the matter between Wag
goner and Hcrron, representatives. The
.Republicans have elected everything else.
The whole fight in this county was made on
clerk and sheriff", but the people came up
and, by their votes, said they were satisfied
with the men who had faithfully served
them so Ion?.
The Oregon Swamp Land Case Decided.
Secretary Schurx has recently decided the
Oregon swamp land matters arising in the
Oregon City land office, which were appealed
last November by Gov. Thayer and argued
by Capt. Mullau, state land agent for Oregon.
The Secretary reverses the decision of the
several land offices and holds that the Oregon
swamp laud grant was one pretenti, that
there has not oeen any forfeiture, either as
to land surveyed prior or subsequent to
March 12, 1860, or whether selected within
two years from the adjournment of the legis
lature or not, and consequently that all lands
in Oregon actually swamp must he certified
to said state. This and also the Dennis Crow
ley decision terminates in favor of the state
of Oregon all disputes between the United
States and said state, that have been pending
under the swamp land act of March 12, 1860
for 20 years.

Paul Wiley went to Albany and back last
Monday in two hours and twenty minutes,
with two little ponies at that. Pretty good
time.
Jos. Speidel is constantly receiving in
voices of all kinds of farming machinery,
which he sells at bed-rock prices. Joe keeps
none but the best.
New and elegant stock of millinery goods
just received, at Mrs. E. A. Knight's, which
will be sold cheaper than they can be bought
any where else in the city.
Prof. L Royal, who has been spending
his vacation in Portland, returned Monday.
His father, C. W. Royal, also came up on
business, ami returned Tuesday.
Mr. T. H. Follett has purchased R. Hultz's
interest in the City Market, and hereafter
the business will be conducted under the
name of Lewis. Foliett. They expect, by

Tom Cauthorn says that he has found that
he cannot be e'ected County Treasurer but
he can sell the best Threshing Machine that

On Tuesday Miss Hattie Hanna of this
city, and Miss Helen Busbnel of Eugene,

Election day passed off quietly, but we
regret to notice that notwithstanding the
rigid law against the sale of intoxicating li

The friends of A. M. Herbert, who
sent to. the insane asylum some time since.
will be pleased to learn that he is rapidly
improving, and it is thought wul soon be
entirely cured. We have been shown a
letter fiom him, and also one from Dr. J. C
Hawthorne, which speak very favorable.
Mr. J. B. Horner, recently local editor of
the Philomath Crucible, has severed his con
nection with that paper and will, we are in
formed, accept a position, for a abort time,
as typo on the Benton Blade. We are glad
Mr. H. is to be in in our city as he is a very
pleasant gentleman ; and being am excellent
workman the Blade is fortunate in securing
bis services.
Sale or Horses. By reference to our
advertising columns it will be seen that J.
W. Brown will sell at public auction, at the
barn of G. B. Smith, 4 miles south of Cor
vallis, twenty head of excellent horses, con
sisting of work horses and brood m ires.
This will be a rare chance to procure good
horses, cheap, as Mr. B. is determined to
dispose of ibem at some price. In our last
issue we stated in the advertisement refer
red to, that this sale would take place at
Soap Creek. This was an error in the ad
vertisement, which has since been corrected
and the sale will take place as above stated
Elocutionary Extebtainmest. Mrs.
D. F. Smith will give an Elocutionary en
tertainment at Hamilton's Hall this even
ing. Mrs. Smith has given a number of
entertainments of this nature in Portland,
and other towns in the valley, recently,
aud is universally commended by the press
every where It has been our good fortune
to meet Mrs. S. during the week, and from
limited acquaintance and her high recom
mendation- and reputation, we have no hesi
taucy in promising our readers a very pleas
ant evening, if they will be present at the
Hall this eveninir.
No Excess. It is not in order for females
to claim exemption from payment of licenses
in this section on the ground that they s
widows or unprotected. Recently the Coun
cil of Walla Walla declined to remit the
license of a lady in business, who asked re
lief on the score of her widowhood The
considerate fellows decided that a woman
had no business to be a widow in a country
where men were lying around loose. Wes

Fire at Independence. On last Satur
day a fire broke out in the Eagle Hotel, at
Independence which soon consumed the
Hotel, the residence of Dr. Belt, Smith'
drug store, a millinery store and two other
buildings. We are not informed as to the
value of the buildings or the amount of in
if any.
Delegates. At the regular meeting of
Excelsior Lodge. No. 9. L O. G. T., held
last Friday evening, the following delegates
and alternates were elected to attend the
Grand Lodge, to be held in Albany, com
mencing on the 15th inst : Delegates, Dr.
J. R. Bayley and B. PL Allen ; Alternates,
Miss C. M. Tnller and Miss Rebecca Wren.
Man Drowned. On last Friday about 9
o'clock a. be. , Wm R. Gilmore, one of the
hands on the steamer Occident fell overboard
in the Willamette river, near the Boonville
warehouse four miles above this city, and
before assistance could reach him he bad
sunk to rise no more, in life. Efforts were
immediately made to recover the body, but
to no purpose, the water being very deep
and rapid. The father of the deceased, who
lives in Salem, was immediately notified of
the lad accident, and came to this city on
Sunday to join in the search that up to this
time has been fruitless. On Tuesday even
ing all hopes of finding the body Inuring ex
pired ropes were stretched across the river
in hopes of catching the body when it raises.
The deceased leaves a wife and two children
residing in Salem.

Insane Patients. From the returns of
Dr. Hawthorne, superintendent of the Ore
gon Insane Asylum, for the quarter ending
May 31, 1880, we cull the following facts
and furores: Number of patients at last
report, 272; admitted daring quarter,' 3
total, 305 ; discharged or died during the
quarter, 22; leaving 283 patients in the
asvlum at the present time. The cost to
the State for care and treatment of the pa
tients during the quarter was $18,410 43.

first-class brick than ever before.. I keep

slop-made have been condemned, by our
best mechanics, as inferior material. Was
that class considered equal to other varie
ties for building purposes, it would have ex
clusive sale, since the cost of manufacture
ing is considerable less, yet such is not the
case. We can find none for sale, in any
market at the present time.

Mr. Editor : As you are receiving items
from various parts of the c-wnty, perhaps a
few squibs from the mountain top may not
come amiss.
we are just now being blessed with one
of those copious rains, of which we are
rightfully proud ami for which we are justly
famous. The aforesaid rain commenced
sometime since, and from present appear
ances will continue until it stops, if not
longer.
Our broad highway, from Corvallis to
Newport, is being placed in excellent con
dition, and will soon be in readiness for the
throng of travel toward the sea-side. Messrs.
Johnson and Porter have this part of the
road under their supervision and are doing
good work. The new road from the Yaqui
na to the English colony on Rock creek is
completed and the hands discharged. This
road opens a large scope of productive ter
ritory which will soon make itself known
through the channels of trade.
Our election passed off very quietly,
though a full vote as polled every man in
the precinct being on hand. As usual a
handsome majority was given the Green
back ticket except on Clerk and Sheriff on
which there was considerable scratching, as
Mr. Hughes received a majority of 12 and
Mr. Johnson a majority of 6. A little sharp
practice was played upon the Greenbackers
by the committee who had the tickets print
ed, by leaving off three of the candidates
and filling their places with those of the
other parties, viz : the candidates for Con
gressmen, Joint Senator and Surveyor.
However, their names were written on and
the two bitter received good majorities
There was a little good natured skirmish of
justices of tin peace. A. J. Porter, the
present incumbent, retires and P. Bryant

very popular man as well as being eminently
qualified for the position. His son Joseph
will perform the duties of constable, and
be a terror to evil doers.
Crops never looked better in this part of
the " Lord s' vineyard," and as the doctors
would say, the health of the community is
"distressingly good Quits.

A Pioneer newspaper. While at
Scottsburg, Douglas county, recently, Mr,
D. J. Lyons, of that town, showed us the
files of one of the earliest newspapers pub
lished in uregon. i ne name ot the paper
was the Umpqaa Weekly Gazette, edited
by D. J. Lyons, and published at Scotts-
Durg, Oregon .territory, ine first issue
bearing date of April 28th, 1854, and is a
neat, readable paper. Mr. Lyons was at
that time, as now, entirely blind, and
though one of the oldest settlers of Oregon,
has never seen any of its beauties. Mr. L,
though now near 70 years of age, still
tains mat vigor oi mind mac made mm in
early manhood a man of influence, and not
withstanding his misfortune, is the proprie
tor and sole manager of the Scottsburg Hotel
and attends to all the business of the house
