SCHOOL MEETING Notice is hereby given that the annual mee. fng of School District No. 9, Benton county, Oregon, will be held in the school house, in aid district, in the city of Corvallis, on Mon day, the 1st day of march, 1880, at 1 o'clock, p. M. for the purpose of electing one director to serve three years, also one director to serve one year, (to fill a vacancy,) and one clerk to serve one year ; also for the pur pose of levying a tax of three and one-half mills on a dollar upon all the the real and personal property in said district, to defray the expenses of a free school for the current year, and to transact any other business that may come lawfully before the meeting. S. L. Shedd, Clerk Dist. No. 9. The above is a move in the right direction, and should meet with the hearty approval of jrll who feel an interest in 2r"noting the welfare of our public schools. Corvallis, we believe, is the only town in the valley that has not abandoned the tuition system, and adopted the plan of maintaining thej, schools by a direct tax upon the property of the dis trict. The latter method is the only one by which the schools can be made what they are designed to be free. Ail property own ers in the district, including widows, are en titled to vote at the school meeting. We trust the directors of the south district will follow the exmrmle of District No. 9. Stearns, an old time Nebraska friend, and now editor and )ublisher of the Daily, Semi-Weekly and Weekly Bee, made us a pleasant call last Friday. D. H is a genial gcutleman and a gooo" judge of what constitutes a live news paper, and spares neither time nor energy to make his publication! not only readable, but highly entertaining and newsy.supplying a place in every household where they are read unoccupied by other publications of a similar character. Our Republican friends in this county, and, in fact, all over the state, would do well to patronize the Bee. They will gei the siinon pure doctrine of the party therefrom, and all the - current news of the day carefnlly selected and ar ranged under appropriate heads. Mr. Stearns has overcome obstacles in the news paper line on this coast that many, in fact most, would have shrank from, but he, with a firm faith, and wholly undaunted by oppo sition and trials, has steadily gone forward with a light heart and an open hand, and has rose aliove all the influences that have operated against him, and to-day is proudly looking down from the eminence he has reachel, and views with quiet satisfaction the broad field of usefulness that is opening out before him. As a live, energetic, far sighted Business man, he bas few equals. See ad. of note lost. Fireman's ball Monday evening. Good Judge Strahan of Albany is in the city on legal business. W. llayburn, of this city, went to Dal las a day or two since on legal business. He came back with a smiling phis. We conclude, therefore, that he either pocketed a good fee, or has planted the seed that will yield a handsome return in the near future. O. E. Carter, onlv son of the editor of this paper left very suddenly Tuesday morn hiir. The cause of this sudden departure is unknown to the ad interim editors or the employees of the Gazette office. In fact no one knew he was going. He left a letter on the table bidding Mrs. Vincent good bye, saying that he should be gone some time. Rev. Mr. Chapman, pastor of the M. E. chourch in this city, called a few moments this week. Mr. Chapman is one of the most earnest, consistent christian workers in our midst and is deserving a liberal sal ary. Why do not his church people wake up and attend to the pastor's temporal wants, a little more? The laborer is worthy of his hire. The Plummer Fruit. In speaking of ene of the many enterprises, of which our city boasts, the Albany Democrat has the following : Geo. W. Sill, superintendent of the packing establishment of the Corvallis Fruit Company, in this city, is now pack ing immense- quantities of the Plummer dried fruit for the English market. They are now at work on two and four pound pa per boxes, which will be put up m fancy shape. We have tried the Plummer fruit and know that the difference between it and sun-dried is very great. It is a great pity that all of our surplus fruit is ot worked up in that slape and thrown on the markets ef the world. At this season of the year es pecially, a cold is such a common thing that in the hurry of every day life we are apt to overlook the dancers attending it and often find too late, that a Fever or Lung trouble has already set in. Thousands lose their lives in this way every winter, while had aosch.ee sUencan Syrup been taken, a cure would have resulted, and a large bill from a Doctor been avoided. For all diseases of the Throat and Lunors, Boschee's German Syrup has proven itself to- be the greatest discovery of its kind in medicine. A disordered liver is frequently caused by worry and trouble, overwork, the nse of to bacco, intense stildy, bard drinking, immod erate eating, indolence, fast living, late hoitrs, licentiousness, etc. , etc., and undoubt edly the best remedy is that standard medi cine, Emil Frese's Hamburg Tea taken as occasion requires either with or without medical advice. But unless you discontinue the evil that brought about your diseased liver, you have no right to look for more than tempoary relief from your troubles.
