A Wayward Young Man. We were
not at the Blue Ribbon C'nb last Saturday
evening, but have been informed that' the
indiscreet youth who attempted to lecture
on that occasion made tome unkind remarks
about the conduct of the Gazette, since
the absence of the Chief. This circumstance
reminds us of one of quite a similar nature,
that occurred in this city several years ago:
A friend of ours had some unpleasant words
with a gentleman, the result of which was,
our friend was assaulted with a very small
pistol. Observing this minature weapon in
the han. Is of his" adversary, he remaaked,
"put that up, for if you were to shoot me
with it, and L ever found it out, it would
provoke me more than any thing you have
said."

our versatile detective, H. S. Maynard,
Esq., has detected one of Linn county's fair
daughters in the act of listening to the woo
ings of the blind God, and he immediately
took her into his possession, and rumor says

of himself, as Pluto did I'orsepine. We
have heard for sme time that the said de
tective hart been neglecting his official du
ties, but we never for once supposed that
this stern and vigilant official would e-er
become so derelict of duty as to get caught
in the wiles of any of Eve's fair daughters.

affair had been kept very quiet, but the
Gazette reporter, ever watchful for news,

According to the AVic NorIncest, the fac
ulty of Pacific University (Forest Grove)
have refused to receive into their preparato
ry school a Portland boy of illegitimate
birth, on the ground that the child of such a
mother as hi3 could not be admitted into
their rank ! If Forest Grove cannot do
better than this, it is evident there are prob
lems in the moral regeneration of the world
which its Christian culture and principles
ore not yet prepared to grapple with, and
some tougher fibre is necessary.
Election of Officers. Last Friday
evening, at the regular meeting of the Adel-
phia Literar3' Society, the following officers
were elected for the ensuing term : Presi

A daughter of I '. L. Buchanan, has been
very ill for a few days, in this city, but we
learu is now improving.
James A. Yantis, Esq., has been quite sick
for two weeks past, but is again out; howev
er, he looks like the last end of a hard win
ter. Henry Simon says, in his hurry to get to
the lire tin. other night, his eye suddenly
come in contact with the bed post, and hence
that bandage.
Jess2 Honak and wife have returned from
their wedding tour, and are making prepar
ations for house keeping on their farm 10 or
12 mi.es south of this city.
Mr. Belknap is now engaged in putting in
repair the buildings leased for his" machine
shop and expects to have everything ready
to commence business next month.
Dave Irvinand Al. Ig met the evening
of tha fire; they met unexpectedly, also ab
ruptly, neither saw the other but both saw
stars, and each have an eye in mourning.
The Celestials of our city have been cele
brating in a becoming manner for a few days
past ti e Chinese New year. They "set
'em up" for the boys in a festive manner.

ued at the Evngelicai church, in this city,
of evenings, and at 4 o'clock in the after

ing young business men, invaded our sanc
tum one day this week, brinxin'j a face full
of sunshine. Mose is a.i genial as a "Don
Quixote," and as energetic and refreshing as

Ralston Cox. our enterprising news dealer,
has sold out to Mr. Bishop, one of our En
glish cons-ins. If the new proprietor of the

We notice a very neat si;n erected in
front of the Vincent House, the work of R.
H. Forsvthe, which indicates fine artistic
skill. We believe that our people will do
well to patronize this young gentleman,
who has recently located among us.

The little mice do not aspire to the bights
of literature attained by the author of the
above lines, for we fear to tread the bights
sublime, that the pedantic pedagogue assumes
he has reached, but are content to earn our
daily bread, be., and at the same time keep
onr optics an inch ami a half the widest
open up and down, that we may avoid being
crushed by his majestic tread.
Alsea Valley. J. R. Gault and David
Ruble, of Lower Alsea, were in town on
Saturday and report in addition to the dam
age in that section given in last week's
Gazette, considerable damage done to build
ings and stock during the late storm. The
road for a long distance, is only passable for
footmen. Although several bouses were un
roofed, fortunately no person were injured
in Alsea Bay bar formed.
In Town. Geo. Woodard, of the firm of
Woodard At Cornell, Portland, and adjuster
of the Phoenix Insurance Co. in this State,
is in the city settling the loss on Mrs. But
terfield's residence, which occurred on the
6th of this month, and covered by a Phoenix
policy. This promptness in adjusting losses
indicates that the old reliable Phoenix is as
readv to pay a loss as to accept a risk and
receivt the premium.

out of my boat on Thursday last will save
cost by calling at the Gazette office and

Teeth Extracted Without Pain. Dr.
Emmet Taylor has introduced into his den
tal practice, Nitrous Oxide Gas, which he
administers to his patients previous to com
mencing the pleasing operation of removing
incisors, bicuspids and molars of his victims ;
as soon as the ashing members are. extract
ed the patient recovers from the effects of the
harmless anisthctic and to their surprise
find immense holes in their jaws in place of
the aching'dentals.
Narrow Gauge. There are rumors of a
narjow gauge railroad enterprise being in
augurated to exend the Dayton and Dallas
road to King's valley, and thence ultimately
to Yaquina Bay. Go right ahead, gentle
men, with all such projects, we can stand
any amount of such good luck.
Yaquina Memorial. Below we give the
ber of signatures obtained in the differ
ent counties, as far as returned up to the
time of going to press : Benton, 1134; Linn,
747; Douglas, 88; Multnomah, 31 ; Marion,
394 ; Yamhill, 119 ; Lane, 212 ; Polk, 192 ;

PACIFIC COAST.
Oregon.
Masonic Lodges are being organized among
the celestials of Oregon.
Roscburg numbers in its.popnlation twelve
doctors and twel ve lawyers. We have about
twice that numbei of that kind of profes
sionals, and yet our city is di3tressedly
healthy, and alarmingly peaceable.
The Baptists of Oregon hold a Sunday
school convention at Oregon City, on-Feb-18th
and 19th. To be conducted by Rev. J.
C. Baker of Salem.
Capt. Cleveland Rockwell, of the U. S.
Coast Survey, was in Portland last week.
He and his family are spending the winter
at Kalama, and the survey barge Kincheloa
is in winter quarters near that place. Tiie
work of triangulation, in which good pro
gress was made last season, will not begin
until April or lates.
Three brothers named Fowler, and a man
named Gay. had a fight a few days ago, in
which the former were vanquished and the
latter came out as Gay as when he entered
the combat. List Sunday one of the Fowler
boys again met Gay and concluded to try
him single-handed. It is now a conundrum
with three doctors to tell whether or not
Fowler will be able to weather it through,
as Gay, after knocking' him down, kicked
several of his ribs in. - Ex.
Bogus $5 gold pieces are being quite ex
tensively circulated.
A Mr. Northcut, of Marion county, liv
ing near Wheatland, was persuaded at the
muzzle of a double-barreled shot gun, in
the hands of a masked man, to part with
33,800 recently.
Judge Gilbert Reynolds, of Canyon City,
was taken to the insane "asylum last week.
Mr. Crosby, of Salem, and Mr. Axthelm,
of Portland, have been holding a series of
meetings in the town of Milwankie during
the last twoweeks, which were well attended.
The new M. E. church at Mount Taher,
that was so badly wrecked by the late storm,
has been repaired at a cost of $325, and is
now in as end, it not better coudition,
than before the storm.
The meeting in East Portland church is
progressing with much encouragement. Sev
eral have found the Lord and other are ear
nestly seeking, while the church is greatly
revive I and quickened. The prospect for a
real awakening is good.
The meeting in Stephens' addition, East
Portland, is still in progress. It is under
the management of Exon and Bui-lingame,
who are doing nearly all the work. Thirty
eight persons have joined the church already
and there will probably be many more.
The Eugene brass band have received nob
by new uniforms.
Rev. Mr. Anderson, late of San Jose, has
been engaged as pastor of the Episcopal
church at Eugene.
Father Veatch died at Cottage Grove on
the 3d inst. He was 93 years of age, had
been married seven times, and was the father
of 23 children.
Mr. W. Kellow, of Washington county,
lost a valuable jackass one night last week
by poison. Si tine one entered the the barn
and administered the dose.
Much building is in progress throughout
the Willamette valley, and almost all local
sawmills are running on extra time. Many
old rail fences thrown down by the storm
will be rebuilt with lumber.
Cattle have fared well this winter in the
vicinity of Prineville, Waso county.
Burglars held high carnival at The Dalles
on the night of the 2d inst. The first place
visited was Charley Cooper's store. The
thieves effected an entrance through the rear
of the building and carried off all manner of
cutlery, tobacco, cigars and other goods, to
the amount o nearly $5200. On the same
night the Ark saloon, comer of third and
Washington streets, was entered by the
light-fingered gentry and robbed of cigars
and liquors, as well as a small amount of
money which was in the drawer.
The Oretfonian says: The Blalock Flume
and Lumber Company yesterday filed arti
cles of incorporation in the office of the sec-,
retary of state, its occupation and purpose
being to construct and operate a canal or
flume from Blalock mountain in Umatilla
county to the Blue mountain extension of
the Walla Walla and Columbia river rail
road at or near Milton, for the piirpqge of
transporting lumber, etc. Capital stock
550,000. N. G. Blalock, C. W. Colby and
D. S. Colby, incorporators.
The Orefnnian says : Kadeshan, one of
the Alaska chiefs who is now visiting this
city, was victimized on Friday night last by
some white man, who drugged him and stole
his money, $57. Kadeshan refused to touch
whisky, but was beguiled into tastiug some
thing which he was assured was not liquor.
The vj!e mixture confused his brain and
made him somewhat violent. The severe
penalty of the law should be meted out to a
wretch who would thus betray and rob an
unsuspectins stranger.
The State Journal has commenced its
seventeeth volume.
Mrs. T. Howard is lying dangerously ill
at her residence in Salem.
The people of Frnnklin want an increased
mail service from that place to Eugene City.
