CHINA WEDDING Last Fridry evening the spacious parlors of the Occidantal Hotel were filled to their utmost capacity by the many friends of Prof. Jos. Emery and his estimable wife, the occasion being the twentieth anniversary of their marriage. The affair had been kept, so far as possible, secret from the parties, and although not a perfect surprise yet so little of the nature and extent of the party was known to the interested par ties as to make the evening a very pleasant one to all who were present. About 9:30 the guests were invited to the dining room where a splendid lunch with coffee was served. After the guests had assembled in the dining hall the Professor and wife were conducted to a large extension table placed in the center of the room, and loaded with the presents of the evening, conspicuous among which was a magnificent china din ner set, a joint present from a large number of friends. Ihis set was presented to the Professor and wife by Judge Chenoweth with pleasing and appropriate remarks, to which Prof. Emery responded in a few well chosen words, expressing not only his thanks for the munificent gift, hut also his high appreciation of the people of Corvallis, by whom he had been so pleasantly sur rounded for so long a time. After lunch a short time was spent in pleasant conversa tion, and all went home well pleased. May Prof. Emery and wife long remain in our midst, and may they live to celebrate their golden wedding. FARMERS OF BENTON COUNTY. Editor Gazette : In the last issue of your paper an appeal is made to farmers to patronize a foreign real estate and printing monopoly, purporting to have the 41on. F. A. Chenoweth & Johnson as local agents for Benton county. Now, you hr.ve all the fa cilities for selling your lands, if you wish to offer them for sale, by Wrenn & Holgate, at the central real e3tate office, in Corvallis. You are told by the above parties that you can have your lands advertised in the East ern States for the small sum of six dollars, if sold, and you must not think that is all your expenses. You will be charged five per cent, on all sales made, half of which goes to the land monopoly at the head of the agency. Now, we offer your land, or in other words, advertise your land, sale or HO sale, free, and our charge for selling is the same as theirs. None of the money goes to any eastern or western monopoly, either for printing or to land grabbers. We do or pay for all your advertising, and it costs you nothing, and it is done by our own printers. So if you wish to sell, and if there are any buyers, we can sell for you. Wrenn & Holgate. Change of Kesidence. Mrs. L. A. Den !3'k ha? Removed to the residence of Mrs. C. Douglas, northeast of North district schoo house where all orders for brick should be left, since work at the yard is closed for the season. Mrs. D. ha3 taken pains to keep a supply of brick on hand and in doing so has expended the means as received for the same ami now has a large amount of excel lent brick for sale, which will be sold cheap for cash. Those desiring to build this win ter, or in early spring, will do well to pur chase this season since brick is cheaper now and hauling can be done for less than in the spring, when the roads are bad and they will thereby aid one who has no other means of gaining a livelihood for her little helpless family than by the sale of brick. Samples of the brick may be seen at the new cistern on main street, at this time. Corvallis Oct. 13th. City Finances. At the meeting of the common council last Monday evening, Re corder Bry3on returned the City assessment roll for 1879, which foots as follows : Valuation of all property 622,698 Indebtedness 190,826 $431,872 This is an increase in the taxable property over last year of $61,192 quite a handsome increase in our little city. Recorder Bryson has made an efficient officer, and this in crease is perhaps owing in part to his vigi lance in assessing. The levy has not yet beeu fixed by the council, but will perhaps be five mills, which will bring into the treas ury of the city $2,159.36, which, with the revenue derived from the various licenses and other sources, ought not only to run the city very nicely, but pay off a portion of the del t that has been allowed to accumulate for the past few years. Fine Drawings. We spent an hour one evening this week in examining the draw ings, architectural and mechanical designs, of the Corvallis and Willamette Valley En gineering Co., who have opened an office in this city. A portion of these drawings were on exhibition at the State fair lst week, and were awarded the first premium medal. These drawings and designs are not only models of beauty, but they also demonstrate that the gentlemen of this company fully and entirely understand their business. Mr. Hans Dahl, of this company, has been mployed for ten years in one of the largest engineering offices in Norway, While Mr. P'Ul and Mr. Segelcke, though not quite so long in actual business, have had consider able practical experience in the same coun try, and are thoroughly educated in their profession. They have located permanently in Corvallis, and we bespeak for them a prosperous future. Pygall & Irwin started their city express last Monday, and will deliver goods tor sev ral of the business houses. This is an en terprise that has long been needed in this city, and we trust the proprietors will se cure patronage sufficient to make it a perma nent business. Read the new ads. Roll on silvery boom. The citizens of Alsea vallev will hold a meeting shortly to make arrangements in re lation to Jthe construction of a toll road down the Alsea river to Alsea Bay. The Rev. Rob. L. Stevens having returned to Albany requests us to give mtice that there will be service in the Good Samaritan Chapel next Sunday, Oct. I9th, at 7.30 P. M. When a man unaccustomed to shaking car pets is suddenly drafted into that service, he will consult his eternal welfare by taking his Bible along with him to read between shakes. Notice. Superior Brick can now be had, cheap for cash, at R. M. Thompson's, j mile south of Corvallis. Call and sea them before purchasing elsewhere. 16:41tt Mr. Wm. Mc Willis, of Alsea Bay, re turned from the fair last Friday, and pro ceeded to his home on Saturday. His strainers and steamers met with gratifying success at the fair. The mail routes, one down the Alsea river to Tidewater, and one from Gardner City, in Douglas county to Collins, in this county, are now estabusned, ana the contractors making regular trips. The farm belonging to the estate of Jos. Hammon, deceased, situated on Soap Creek, in this county, was sold last Saturday by the Administrator. This farm consisted of 400 acres and sold for $4,000. The proprietor of the Vincent House is en largeing the billiard room and putting new cushions on the billiard table, thus making one of the most comfortable and attractive placesfor innocent amusement in the city. We are pleased to acknowledge a call from our old friend, J. J. Nye, of Yaquina, the first of the week. He started for home Monday evening, in the capacity of captain, pilot ajd first mate of a four in hand ox team. T. J. Buford's bath rooms are splendid, not only refreshing, but possessed of such cleansing properties that he confidently as serts that he can wash the stains from a man's character. The Editor of the Blade has tried them, and Tom. claims with rea sonable success. Don't point your gun at yourself. Don't point your gun at any one else. Lomcrhas leased the interest of A. J. Young in the Occidental Hotel, and in future, that now popular house will be conducted by Mr. Lomer and the former partner, Mr. Polly. Mr. Young is retiring from the business on account of the continued ill health of his wife, and the guests will doubtless find in his successor, Mr. L., a most excellent and genial landlord. Look out for ad. next week. Fashionable Dressmaking. Misses Kel ly & Kennedy have opened a dressmaking shop and are prepared to do all kinds of sew ing in the latest style. Measures taken and patterns of Dolmans, princess, cloaks, pol onaise, and in fact everything pertaining to the dressmaking line cut to order. Leave orders at Mr3. J. H. Kelly's millinery store, Second street. What other preparations fail to do, Hall's Hair Renewer surely accomplishes. It re news the l.air and especially restores its color when gray and faded. As a dressing it is unsurpassed, making the hair moist, soft and glossy. The' most economical pre paration ever offered, its effects remain a long time, and those who have once made a trial of it will never use any ather. Adver tiser and Union, Fredonia, N. Y.
