Conspirators 'Arrested Interesting
Development.
Washington, April 18.To Sanford ! Uncle
is much better ; he sat up a quarter of an hour
this morning. Was bright and cheerful. To
day there is marked improvement upon yester
day. Frederick is slowly but surely recover
ing his consciousners ; he has spoken twice this
forenoon, He sleeps much of the time and
breathes regularly and easily. His pulse and
appetite are good. I think every one feels en
couraered with retard to both. The messen
ger and nurse are both doing well.

Immense meetings have been held all over
the Nation, especially in the great cities, ex-.
pressive of grief at the death of Mr. Lin
coin, and a determination that justice shall
be done hereafter ip crushing out the rebell-.
without much mercy. In some cities,
San Francisco and others, mob violence was
taken on opposition newspaper presses,
in a few cases men who expressed sympathy
with the rebels were shot down or hung
All mob violence is to to deprecated, and
should not be resorted to. Hut men must
not be allowed to express sympathy for a re
bellion, after this dreadful exhibiton of its
workings, much less to signify approbation
of this terrible murder. However, let law
and order prevail in bringing men to justice
who will do so. I
What is the condition of Mobile and the
contending armies in that vicinity is not
known. But it is either in the possession of
the Union forces now, or soon will be. Th
them completely surrounded,

Baltimore, 18th. A highly important arrost
was made here to-day, the name of the party is

fession of being one of tho conspirators against
the life of the President, acknowledging him
self to be tha author of the letter signed Sara,
found in Booth's trunk.
Washington, 18th. Last night a man dis
guised as alaborer, carrying a pick on his shoul
der, approached the house occupied by the fam
ily of Survalt; iu this city, and was about to en
ter when he was arrested- Upon removing t
the dirt from his face he appeared to bo quite a
different looking person from what his appear,
ance indicated. He called himself Payne, and
exhibited not a little embarrassment. He
managed to ask in an agitated manner, why he
was arrested. The colored servant of Secretary
Seward was sent for, when ho exclaimed imme
diately, "that is the man, I know him by gen
eral appearance and by his mouth." The ser
vant said there could be no mistake. There
were others in Mr. Seward's house at the time
who have a recollection of Survalt's appearance
and -will bo afforded an opportunity to recog
nize him. The man arrested is believed to be
Survalt who perpetrated the dreadful acts at
the house of Mr. Seward.

party alluded to as under arrest here, states that

He savshe refused to have anything further p
do with it. and endeavored to indnoo others to
give up their designs upon the life of the Presi
dent.
This is substantially a correct statement of what
the prisoner has divulged. He is a well known
resident of Baltimore.
New York, April 19. Herald's special dispatch
ays : It is reported that the assassin who entered
Mr. Seward's house has been arrested. It is cer
tain that one of the assassins, probably Sur
vtlt, has been Arrested. Samuel Mattoon of
Hoqkstown, Md. and, who wrote the letter found
ia Booth's trunk, signed " Sam," has been arrested

enlisted men as prisoners, and hare taken 5 mor
tars and 25 guns. The Major and part of the gar
rison escaped by water. Blakely is already in

are stronger than I now believe them to be,

Lincoln, and gave expression of there feeK

Andrew Juhaaoa, the Vice President
-was sworn in, and entered upon the duties
of the oflfice as President, at 11 o'clock, on
the same day of Mr. Lincoln's death. The
oath of office was administered by Chief
"Justice Chase, at the Private rooms of Mr
Johnson, in the presence of the Cabinet

were solemn and all the surrounding circum
stances important in the highest degree.
From Sherman's army very little has been
heard the last few days.
Startling transactions at Washington have
occupied public attention to the exclusion of
almost everything else during the week.
Grant and Lee are on the most friendly
terms of intercourse, and all their powers

advanced to afford a very safe conjecture ot
what the harvest will be. The breadth of wheat
sown durine the last Fall and Winter in this
county is not very extensive less than usual
The cold rainy Winter has not been a favorable
one for wheat. The Fall seeding gave better
nromise of a 20od vield than the Winter seed-,

ing does. The spring has now come, however,1
ith the warm sunshine and gentle showers,
which brings much that was thought hardly
worth harvesting, forward with some promise.
Altogether, a medium harvest may be relied on.
Oats are hardly forward enough yet to deter
mine the probabilities of the yield. Not a
great breadth is sown, Farmers are now busy
planting potatoes
Fruits are more promisine. Unless a late
frost should injure the young fruit, which some
times is the case in Oregon, there will be abun-
lance of apples and pears. Plums and cherries
ire also promising; the blooms will soon be, or
are perhaps now, full blown. Peaches arc un-
njured, but orchards of peach trees arc not nuj
merous, as the tanners nave very mucn neglec
ted this valuable, fruit. The smaller fruits,
room berries aiidlcurrant", are said not to be:
