The Judge thought no such difficulty in the way, when Mr. Elliott again expressed his hearty approval of the order, and his desire to become a member. The Judge, with a sly twinkle in his eye, gravely re marked that the motives of his friend were plainly apparent the fact of. his wife's opposition to the order was probably the cause of Mr-,, Elliott's desire to join au or ganization oi wuicn women must neces sarily necome memhers. - - - - "" ' ' ! A few day3 ago, a Polk : county farmer entered the coopering establishment of John D. Biles, at Portland, and, purchasinga num ber of bucket-;, ordered them forwarded by the steamer Grover. It will, be borne in mind that John D. is "the Agent of the Holladay Line, and suavely suggested that if shipped by the Alice, the goods would reach their destination sooner than by the Grover. The . farmer replied that he was in no hurry,. and " guessed he would have them shipped on the Grover." The polite Agent then reminded the farmer that the freight would be less on the Alice ; but the honest farmer deemed the freight charges on a few.buckets but a trifling matter, and refused to change the'order. John D. then, with a knowing wink, informed his custo mer that his buckets, would be landed at his door, by the Alice, free of cost! but the sturdy friend of the-opposition refused the generous offer, and left the enthusiastic Agent with the parting injunction to ship his freight on the Grover.
