. A Surprise Party.
". On Tuesday evening last, a large num
ber of our young people . got up a very
pleasant surprise party in honor of the
steamer Grpver. At nine o'clock some
' ten or fifteen couples," accompanied by
music, stepped aboard the magnificent
steamer, taking Captain Hoi man and the
officers by' the most complete '. surprise.
The visitors were cordially welcomed by
the Captain, and in a twinkling the main
deck was cleared for dancing. Several
hours were spent in devotion to the happy
gods Terpsichore, Bacchus, Orpheus and
the divine Cecilia, when the" party gave
the Captain a parting serenade, and retir
ed. The officers extended the hospitalities
of the vessel in the most lavish manner,
and joined in the season of merriment
"with a ,-hearty will. The officers of the
Grover are gentleman of the first water,
and the occasion of Tuesday evening will
long be remembered with pleasure by these
who participated in the enjoyment.
' "The License Question. An effort is
being made to raise the license of saloons
to $600. Against this movement we have
nothing to lay - yet we can but consider
that it is unjust,unless its objects extend to
the merchandising establishments, which
sell as much liquor as the' saloons. ' We
are opposed to compelling the saloons to
pay ait exorbitant license, while' the dry
goods merchant and the druggist are per
mitted to sell whisky by the pint," quart
aud gallon, and pay no license. "Equal
and exact justice to all men" is our motto.
: No New Hotel. E. C Holden, Esq.,
who came up on Monday's boat, tempora
rily leased the old Railroad House, and
moved his turniture into it on Tuesday.
On Wednesday morning, through some
disagreement in regard . to the house,
Mr. Holden failed to get the hotel, and
had his goods put aboard the Grover, for
Portland. We exceedingly regret that
Mr. H, could not meet with sufficient in
ducement to warrant' him in -remaining
among us. - '
Closed. The first half term of the
North Public School closed yesterday.
The second half term opens on Monday.
This is an excellent time for pupils to en
ter. ' Those entering now will be charged
for only the remainder of the term. The
primary department of that school is In
charge of one of the most efficient teachers
.In the county. -' ' : .
New Grocery Store. Read the adver

umn. This gentleman has just commenced
business in our city, and ha3 taken the first

State Board of Education. At the
recent meeting of this body, in Salem, a
State Board of Examination was organiz
ed. The obect of the meeting was to dis
cuss and arrange the preliminary for the
coming examination in July. After care
ful deliberation a list of studies was select
ed in which the candidates for the different
classes of certificates will be examined.
The percentage of correct answers requir
ed was also fixed and a number of rules
were adopted for the government of the
examination. The Board of Education
also submitted to the Board of Examina
tion the, question of a list of text-books to
be recommended to the County - Superin
tendents for adoption as a uniform State
series under the law. A full series Was
agreed upon. "
The Grover. This steamer, arrived
here on Tuesday afternoon, with, a very,
heavy freight, and a large number of pas
sengers. V She lef t'Portland with forty pas-
sengeis, and more freight than the train
and old line of steamers combined. In
order to accommodate delegates to the
Farmers' Convention, at Salem, she laid
here until Wednesday- afternoon,' when
she dropped down to" Albany, leaving there'
at an early hour on Thursday morning, 1
and returning on Friday". She will be here
again on Tuesday. . .
Mystic Banquet. The members of Rose
Croix Lodge; A: F. & A. M.; " held their
annual mystic banquent on Holy Thurs
day (last Thursday) evening; ! The supper
was served by Jack Alphin, and those who
partook of it inform us that it was the best
hotel supper ever served in Corvallis.- Al
phin knows how to do these things.
Hard Up. Holladay's boats are getting
in a tight way," as will appear" from the
fact that the Alice - brought' up, Ton last
Monday evening, several . packages, from
San Francisco, marked "Lorenzo Gerhard,
care steamer Gov. Grover ." . When a line
descends to stealing the opposition's freight
it must be in a tight strait.
Ready fob Business. Henry Dohse an
nounces that he. is now prepared to take
pictures in every conceivable style, at the
old gailery, on Third street. , He has thor
oughly overhauled the establishment, and
invites visitors to Inspect his rooms. .
New Butcher Shop. Mr, Niok,Bae-
sen .will .. shortly open the market foif
meriy occupied by Jese Walker, and "be"
prepared to furnish . meat .of all kinds.
We welcome this gentlemen to .Corvallis,
and wish him abundant success. -
The Benton House. This house Is
daily growing in popular favor. The ac
commodating landlord, Jack Alphin, Esq.,
spares no pains to render his many guests
comfortable.- . Go there for a, square meal.
New Bartender. We notice our elon
gated friend, Jack Bercaw, doing the hand
some behind the bar of the Grover . He
keeps the finest " comforts." ; ;? . ;

Dr. T. V. B. Embree. We inadvert
ently omitted,' last week, to notice the
new "ad." of Dr. T. V. B. Embree. This
gentleman had announced that he would
locate in Corvallis, but his many friends

think of parting: with him, and offered
him sufficient inducement to remain among
them. The Doctor is a successful physi
cian, and an accomplished gentleman.

has been for two years employed on the
Eastside road, passed through town with

A Petition. A couple of ladies have
been perambulating this city during the
week, soliciting the names of our female
population to a petition for an increase of
the license for the sale Nff liquors in less
quantities than one quart. Dr. Boswell
has been calling on the masculine portion.
Schoou Election. At the school elec
tion, held last Monday, Sol. j King was
elected Director, and Wm. Groves, Clerk,
in the South District. In the North Dis
trict, Wm. McLagan was chosen Director,
andS. L. Shedd, re-elected Clerk. '
Liquor Sale.-t-JoIui Steers, of Port-
land, sold, last Monday, the entire stock
of liquors, together with, the building of
the late Exchange Saloon. Dr. Bayley
was the purchaser, who yesterday removed
the liquors to his drug store.
Old Century. By the next trip of the
Grover, Henry Bird will receiveanother
cask of this fine whisky, which has become
such a favorite among his patrons. " He

are just haying completed a new and hand

Fob Portland, The little steamer
Oneatta, formerly plying on the Yaquina
river, is to be taken to Portland. Her
place will be supplied bya new boat.

is rapidly approaching completion, under
the skillful hands of Messrs; Russell, Bar
ber, Pixley, and Rayburn.
Opened. The croquet season has open

;.; Fearful Leap. 7A gentleman from the
country informs us that, one day last
week, aS two men were driving a team at
tached-to a wood wagon, along a precipice
on the south side of Oliver's Butte, the
horses took fright, and plunged over an
almost perpendicular wall some thirty-five
feet in highfc. : The team escaped unhurt,
but the wagon was shivered to, atoms.

& Globe Fire Insurance Company, came
up last Saturday, and paid Dr. J. R. Bay-
ley $1,500, the amount of insurance on the
City Hotel, destroyed on the morning of
