An examination of classes will take place.
In the afternoon, classes in Algebra, Phys
iology, and Book-Keeping will be exam
ined, recititions and essays will be deliv
ered, and vocal and Instrumental music
given by the school. At the

The exercises will consist of recitations,
essays and vocal music. Everybody is in
vited. These schools Jiave been ably con
ducted, and deserve every encouragement
from our citizens.

signed a request to the Dramatic Society,
that it repeat the play of " Ten Nights in
a Bar Room," tiie proceeds of the enter
tainment to be devoted to the purchase of
a Are bell.- Whether or not the Society
will comply with the request lias not yet
transpired. , The object is a worthy one,
and the numerous signers to the request
eviuce a full appreciation of former efforts
of' the Dramatic Society. v ' ' J-
The Minstrels. Ow ing to the lateness
of" the hour at which the performance by
the Corvallis Minstrels closed last night,
we cannot notice it as we otherwise would.
Suffice it to say, that each one did his part
well, and the whole entertainment was a
.complete success. -The dance alter the
performance was a very pleasant afiair,
and was highly enjoyed by a large number
of happy votaries of Terpsichore.

North School, yesterday afternoon, ,was
very interesting. The Doctor treated the
composition and working of the brain: in
an able manner. Miss Briggs furnished
instrumental, and the pupils vocal, music
for the occasion. ' A large number of visi

might have been retained in Corvallis. In
this city there are two or three gentle
men who are operators, and it seems quite
strange that one of them, at least, could
not have been induced to take charge
the office, in connection with his other
pursuits. " It is by no means complimen
tary, to the business - enterprise of her citi
zens that Corvallis should be entirely cut
off from telegraphic communication. A
city of 1,000 inhabitants unable to main
tain a telegraph line ten miles in length !
But, for the credit of our citizens, be it
said that the telegraph office was cut out,
and the instruments packed up before any
one was aware of the order having arrived
The business interests of this place demand
that a telegraph office be maintained here,
and we hope Superintendent Plummer
will allow the line to remain until our
.business men shall have had an opportun
ity of taking some steps toward the re-establishment
of the office. .

The Stock Tkade. FromWR. Bakerf
who recently returned from Willow Creek,
Wasco county, we learu that, Rowing to
large importations last season from Texas,
beef cattle will be quite low in .'Eastern
Oregon next summer, Good stock sheep
are in good demand, at $4 per head. Mut
ton sheep are selling in that vicinity for
$3 00. Mr. B. thinks sheep raisers will
continue to realize good prices for. the next
year, large numbers of persons now em
barking in that business having a tendency
to keep prices up. "
Sheriff's SALE.-On Tuesday last Sheriff
Palmer sold lots three and four, of section
twenty-seven, with all the appurtenances
(property of Ben. Simpson, on Yaquina
Bay), under execution. --Messrs.' James
Chambers "and W. C. Clark were the pur
chasers, paying therefor the sum of $1260,
and assuming ( the payment of several
judgments, i mounting to $2,500. We are
informed that the property is worth about
$8,000.
Caitohed. Levi Levingstone, charged
with 'passing counterfeit money, at the
Albany Fair, last September, was brought
to Albany, by sheriff Parker, last Wednes
day, who we learn, captured the accused
iu Olympia, W. T. This is the same in
dividual who eluded the vigilance of Dep
uty Sheriff Humphreys, at Elk City, some
mouths since.
"The Beatjtifci. Snow." The Wil
lamette Valley, from, Oakland to Aurora,
was visited, last Saturday night, by a fall
of snow, varying from two, to eight iuches
in depth. No snow fell at Portland, and
the depth gradually increased towards the
head of the valley, the deepest being on
Rice's Hill. At Roseburg none fell.
Lighthouse Freight. On Monday last,
the Fannie Patton brought up- thirty -eight
cases of oil, and some other stores for.
Foul weather Lighthouse. ": Messrs. Ham-1
lin & Stanford left for Elk city, last Thurs- i
day, with a portion of this freight.
Messrs. Brown & Emrick, will tike the
remainder to-day

Accident. We are informed that Rev.
J. M. Lovell, of Dallas, formerly of this
city, met with a painful accident, last
week, by the bursting of a gun in his
hands. One of his eyes was injured, but
to what extent we are unable to learn.
A New Teacher. Miss. Clara Watt, of
Astoria, has been engaged as an assistant
teacher in Corvallis College. Miss W. is
a graduate of Willamette University, and
bas eight years' experience as teacher
She is expecte4 to 'arrive to-day.
Early Gardening. Mr. A. Fuller, of
this city, planted potatoes in his garden
last Thursday, February 19th. Thiuk of

Farm Purchased. Mr. W. A. Wells
purchased, this week, the farm of Monroe
Hodges, on Soap Creek, nine miles north
of this city, containing six hundred and
fifty acres. The price paid was $8,000.
Returned. Messrs. A. H. Blakesley,
James Foster and Geo. PWrenn have re
turned from an extended trip down the
Columbia river. They report business as
very brisk at all points below Portland.
New Post of G. A. R. Major John
son, of East Portland, is expected m tms
citv. shortly, to organize a new Post of
the Grand Army of the Republic. The
necessary papers have already arrived.
