Speed the time Wo never saw a time when . we felt more sure of bur ability to be resigned to " flash times." ' ' " . . men have different woys Sf spcnding"'money A sailor, for instances after' "having arrived home from a long voyage, squanders his earn ings in convivial excess,' centering ha weelt of reckless hilarity the pleasure from which he has been hindered; for so many months. His way of spending money seems absurd and unaccountable to a studentj'whose chief use of money is in buying books, and hearing lectures, or getting costly apparatus for scientific discovery. The use of money ought not to be limited to any selfish measure. No one ought to buy what he honestly believes to be of no use to any person! Eqamplcs might be given ot this way of wasting money, which we would re cognize at once as apt and common. A purchase may be good in itself, yet it may not be in place for you or foe, and it onght not to take 1 our money from things which we really need. One may have more money than he cares to keep or to invest, but it is better to continue it as productive capital than to spend it for the sake of getting rid of money. We may see those who seem to have no other ' motive in their purchases than just to " buy something," they do not care what. Do not spend wholly for self. Spend as much as yon can for that which you can use in common with others, or that which will bring the largest blessings to the largest number. Spending money all on one selfish en joyment is morally worse than hoard ing it, for, in the one case, it is wholly lost, while in the other, it is kept for heirs. Nero. PROGRESSION. It would be nearly impossible for ns to enumerate the wonderful advantages that we possess over former generations, in the way of industry, science and art. We have access to the discoveries that have been made by man, since his cre ation, as they have been given "to us from generation to generation aiding, in a great extent, to raise ns from a state of barbarism to one of more import ance and greater perfection. Men of ancient times were compelled to labor under disadvantages that are now ex tinct, and to stand wholly ujjon -their own foundation looking to no other than their own strong minds to search out the wonders of a mysterious crea tion. Their discoveries, to a great ex tent, are now before us ; we can learn them as they are given to ns by the wise of past ages, and then pass on into the study of the unknown. By this means, we are permitted to approach nearer the great ideal of perfection each successive year. If it were not for the twenty-six characters by which lan guage is revealed to ns in our tongue, or some other means that would answer the same purpose, our knowledge would be comparatively limited, and of little benefit to man. To the various forms of written science may be attributed the universality of our present knowledge ; and, although we may have no New ton's among us, still we are moving for ward at a rate not surpassed by any age since the commencement of civiliz ation. Thus, we see and feel the great responsibility that rests upon the youth of our land, to keep in motion this great work of progression that will finally crush ignorance, and - substitute in its stead wisdom and refinement, r-; C L. ; Appointed. -John A, Payton has been appointed to fill the vacancy in the ' Editorial Committee of the Stu dents' Column, : occasioned . by the re ignation of J.
