A correspondent of the Portland Oregoni­
an, writing from Canyon City under date of
November 12, 1875, says;
“ The Columbia and Umatilla Indian#
have been a soarce o f great annoyance to the
settler# of this valleo during the last Sum ­
mer. W e some time since called attention
o f the authorities to this matter, and intima­
ted that unless these Indians were taken
care of, trouble would likely ensue. A few
weeks since, having become emboldened by
repeated liberties granted them, they enter­
e d a Chinese mining camp at John Day City
;*nd compelled these defenseless people to
.gkve them whiskey. They then entered the
streets o f Canyon City in drunken revelry,
-causing timid people to quake with fear, and
m odest ones to blush at their obscenity,
