t h e east .
Col. Chapman passed through this city
last week on his way below. He assures
ua that we will know in about thirty days
whether the English Company w ill finally
accept the contract for building the rail-
road'made by their agents with the P. D.
<fc S. L. R. R. Company. W e understand
from the Col., not very definitely however,
that there must be local aid. Still more
indefinite are the terms upon which that
uid is to be given. W e also gather from
him that the road w ill bo first built be
tween Baker City and the Colum bia River.
We suppose that the transportation from
the point where the road strikes the Co
lumbia to Portland will be done by boat.—
We confess for ourselves (though it is use
less to conjecture what will be done) that
we don’ t like t h a t arrangement, if we are
to furnish, as intimated by Col. Chapman,
£2000 per m ile, without any definite under
standing how we are to get it back. We
are too poor, in this county, to give so
large a sum for that which m ightprobablv
become on ly a change o f masters. We are
ia favor o f a railroad, but we want two
ends to it, one at the East, where the true
market o f Baker County is, and the other
on the seaboard, at Portland or elsewhere,
not especially for our accom m odation,
but for the rest o f Eastern Oregon, and
more especially the grain-growing coun
ties. Our interest here is to have an East
ern connection, to procure machinery,
Eastern merchandise, and a market for
the base ores know n largely to exist in our
county. W hen our m ining interests here
are even partially developed, all the cere
als grown here w ill have a hom e market.
Even now we are largely dependant on
Union County for breadstuff's and vegeta
bles. It is to the Orient we look for sub
stantial aid in developing our mineral re
sources, and the necessary immigration to
give us wealth and population.
H o r r i b l e K a t a s t r o f y . — The
water
ain’ t high between here and Auburn, it is
considerably above that stage, and it is
wet, decidedly wet, and o f the color and
consistency o f the material out o f which
Chinamen are made. Two reckless H e
brews intent on getting their “ pound of
flesh” out o f a Gentile creditor at Auburn,
whose placid indifference to epistolary
dunning was what Mantilini would call a
“ demnition grind” on their unsophisticat
ed natures, undertook to go to Auburn, but
destiny, in the shape o f high water, stood
the Gentile’s friend, and baffled their un-
ehrlstianiike detei-in ¡nation, nnd they
have returned here sadder and wetter, if
not better men. They attempted to cross
the slough above the city in a buggy. In
that slough there is a hole where the road
track crosses it. It is deep enough to swal
low up Jerusalem. We wish our amiable
one-legged Supervisor would get into it,
(the hole, not Jerusalem ', and then maybe
he would fix it, (not Jerusalem, the hole).
They didn’ t know how deep it was, and
they refuse to tell to what depth they mea
sured it. Just as they were going into it
the following conversation took place,
Mose (the names here given being ficti
tious, of course), being the driver:
“ Mose, py got you looks a leedlo oud,
dat vater vas d—m deeb 1”
“ Max, shoost hold on m it your m ouf,
von place slioost as deeb und do udder
von !”
Just then they got into the hole, and the
following excited conversation took place:
“ Mo---- Ugh 1 Shee 1 1 W ougb 1 ! 1”
“ Ma---- W hoop ! H ell ! ! Bubble—ub-
ble—pshew 1 1 !”
Then Max flew over the dash board,
Mose rolled out behind, the buggy turned
“ under side u p ,” and the horses got loose
and returned to the stable. Max got home
somehow, and Mose, after swim m ing down
the slough about half a m ile on bis hands
and knees after the bufialo robe, and get
ting close enough several times not to
catch it, returned to town and reported
that they d id n ’ t have any buffalo robe
with them . W e are glad the boys were
not hurt.
A n O p e n L e t t e r .— The following' letter
was picked up on Main Street last week,
