was in town. Wo were raised in the belief

men. We always trembled before great
men. We wanted to see John Clark and
tremble. We put on our robert-tail dress
goods to And him. We went to the hotel
and he stood before us. He had an iron-
gray smile, three demijohns on his nose,
and smelt like the perfume of a thousand
bottles. We trembled 1 We saw at a
glance why he had been appointed. He
belonged to the society for the extirpation
o f whiskey, and Grant had sent him to
p u t i t d o w n in Idaho.
Slowly and sadly
we mourned over the fate of the vast pop­
ulation who would have to go dry. We
saw him no more. But we heard o f him.—
“ Tho’ lost to sight Ac.,” (we forget the
rest,) we heard of him, a tale that stirred
up all our gushing fountains of emotion.—
It ran thisly: In the “ Bank Exchange”
dwelt a Tiger. It was an animal of huge
and monstrous proportions. It was hard­
hearted. Itou'ght to have been—it fed _on
chips, suckers, coin , greenbacks and oth­
er delicacies. It wasn’ t afraid of John
Clark, it did not quail beneath his judicial
glance. It growled at him and he went in
—in—in. The combat was furious. Every
time it clawed it got a twenty dollar green­
back on its nail, until at last he gave it a
check, not a push-back, but a check on a
banker at Lewiston for $336,20. Four hun­
dred dollars besides did he throw into the
eyes of the angry beast to appease its rage
—but it only smoled a wicked .smile, and
swallowed them. Luring the whole of
this terrific fight—tho Judge behaved man­
fully—gazing joyfully about every ten min-,
utes into the bottom of a glass. Finding
tho Tiger too strong for him, he undertook
to penetrate the Eleusinian mysteries of
Poker. About five o ’clock In the morning

three eights which the fortunate holder
had gathered indiscriminately from all the
discards on the table. Then he got mad
and butted the floor with his seat of hon­
or, and tried to climb up the window
panes and sit down on the stove. Failing
in this he ploughed through the snow to
the hotel on his nose, and went to bed on
his ear. JThe excitement made him so
drunk they couldn't wake him up to go on
the stage, and lie hired a cutter in the
morning to overtake it—and that’s all we
know about John Clark, Ass. Just. &c., of
Idaho Territory, a n d------- elsewhere.
C a u g h t .— For
the last two or three
weeks a number of letters, from Portland,
have been received here, in all cases by
married m en, enclosing a circular signed
“ R. Stanley,” containing an offer, on the
receipt of ten dollars to-give information
as to the means of preventing an increase
o f the families o f the aforesaid married
men. Considerable speculation was in­
dulged in as to how the individual above
named should know who were the married
men in this community. It now turns
out that it was one Wesley Parker, who
li vs resided here until recently. He was
arrested for it, on the 30th ult.Jn Portland
and on the 31st waived an examination,
and gave bail to appear at the next term
of the Circuit Court for Multnomah Coun­
ty. His residence here should have taught
him that he couldn’ t get any money out
o f this community on that “ lay out” —it’s
the other kind of information they want
here.
S tray C attle .—Tho following stray cattle
are at Dah Shaw’s ranch, eight miles from
Baker city; the owners may have the same

Hox. W. C. W hitson , Associate Justice of
Idaho, called on us last Monday coming on
his return home from attending the Su­
preme Court of the Territory. Wo were
sorry to hear of the indisposition of his aim-

of the Judge hurrying homo so soon. We
hope to hear of her complete recovery toiler

W riting S chool .—Prof. E. J. Heins, will
open a Writing School in the academy on to­
morrow evening. Prof. Heins comes to us
well recommended from Boise city, where
he taught two terms. From letters we have
received from friends there, we have no hes­
itancy in recommending him to our citizens
as a first class toaciier.

- R evival .—A protracted meeting is now in
progress in this city. The Northern and
Southern Methodists and Babtists have join­
ed in it. We hope they will do good. There
is certainly much room for great effort.
