C losing E xercises .—T ho closing exercises o f the Spring Term of the Baker City Acad­ emy, as was advertised, took place on last Friday evening April 17th, at the Academy building. * The large hall of the second story was crowded with ladies and gen demen to its utmost capacity. The exercises were di rected by Prof. Barrett and bis wife, tlie very- competent teachers in the Academy. The entertainemeut was a complete success, and reflected great credit both upou the teachers and pupils. It is a bard matter for us to dis­ criminate where all done well, and wo shall not attempt to do so. The prizes for the best Declamation was awarded by tho Judges, Messrs. L. B. Ison, T- C. Hyde and A. C. McClelland, to Ed. McEachen first prize, and Wesley Wisdom second. To the young ladies, for be3t reading, the Judges, Messrs. J. D . McFarland, A. C. McClelland and T. C. Hyde, gave the first prize to Miss Eva Rogers and the second to Miss Fanny War- low. The Summer Term at the Academy commenced yesterday, .with a very fair at­ tendance of pupils. N ew H otel . —Messrs. Clement & Sicord have purchased the Baker City Hotel prop­ erty, in our city, and will open it to the public, as a first class hotel on next Monday morn­ ing. The above named gentlemen have had long experience in tho hotel business, and are determined that their former reputation shall not sutler in the management o f the Baker City Hotel. H . C. E dwards . —Mr. John Rickard called on us yesterday morning, and informed us *hat Hank Edwards and himself have their headquarters at the Washoe Ferry, on Snake Birer, where they are herding Edward’s large band o f cattle. Mr. Edwards is supplying the butchers o f Placcrville, Idaho, with fine beef at good prices. We are pleased to hear of Hank’s good health, Ac. W a s h in g t o n , April 15.— The F i­ nance bill will be present d to the President to-morrow for his appro­ val. There are no indications that he will withhold his signature. The Senate Territorial Committee have decided to recommend the con­ firmation of Gen. McCook as Gover­ nor of Colorado, in place of Eibert, to be removed. The Honse Territorial Committee have agreed to report a bill for the admission of New Mexico into the Unit n. Much surprise is expressed hero at the apparent prevalence of an im ­ pression in California and Arizona that the Interior Department and Indian Bureau are hostile to Gen. Crook, and that they are collecting data relative to the conduct of affairs by his subordinate officers, with the intention of making a fight on him. There is no truthful foundation whatever for such reports. The situation of affairs in Arkan­ sas is unchanged. L o n d o n , April 15.— Fifty thousand persons were present at the landing of Livingstone’s remains. The hearse was followed by a line of carriages and the body was taken to the Geo­ graphical Society’s Booms to await the funeral, which occurs on Satur­ day. Sir William Ferguson, the Queen’s Surgeon, has identified Abe remains.
