y Administrator’s Notice. LEGAL ADVERTISEMENTS. P O B T tlN D , DALLES «& SALT LAKE R A IL R O A D . Estate „of Christopher. Sunders, Deceased. The Oregon Granger says: “ There is a bill pending in Congress, propo sing aid to the contemplated railroad from Salt Lake City, Utah, overland through Idaho and Eastern Oregon, to the Columbia river, and thence down said river to the city of Port land. on the Willamette. That this road is of vast importance to every interest in our State, few citizens of Oregon will dispute. Oregon, and Hie region of county thro igh which this road will run, if ever built, has a population to-day of little more than a hundred thousand souls. Yet the territory is' so large, and the natural wealth so great, that there is ample room for three million. The wheat lands of Oregon, Idaho and eastern Washington are justly cele brated as the best in the world, but from a want of proper transportation facilities, four-fifths of them are to day unproductive. The region named is capable of, and will in time produce, twenty million bushels of wheat for export, rather than four million, as now. We honestly be lieve that time will prove our esti mate too small bv twenty million bushels. But in order that we, or our children, may reap the benefits to accrue from this increased pro duction, we must have some means of outlet, and the construction of this railroad seems to be the one thing needful. Lock navigation of the Cascades and Dalles of the Co lumbia is a foregone conclusion, but that enterprise will require years for its completion. It will come, but years must intervene. The railroad is a work of but a short time, and we must have it, and have it at once.— The difficulties in the way are moun tain high, but they can be overcome, if the people so will. The Granger movement may be laughed at by pol iticians and speculators, but that does not change the fact that the or der has become a power in the land. The successful swindling of the peo ple and the Government by so many railroad corporations of late, has aroused a spirit of antagonism in the east, toward all schemes looking to the securing of Government aid to railroads, and members of Congress are beginning to fear the power be hind the throne. Hence it will be a difficult matter to secure the passage of a bill aiding our enterprise. We suggest that every Grange in Ore gon, and each one in Idaho and Washington Territory, circulate a petition in their lodge, calling upon Congress to make the necessary leg islation, and forward the same at once to the Clerk of the House.— With sq^h a petition, generously signed, the work can be accomplish ed—without this lever, the matter is in doubt.- Every Granger is inter ested in opening out to immigration this large territory. W o m a n ’ s M ission. The La Grande Sentinel says: “ We commend the following sensible words to women everywhere—partic ularly.those women who love to pray in and about whiskey shops. “ The crusade against liquor deal ers which has been inaugurated in the West, and is making suck rapid strides through the country, engi neered by females, is undoubtedly a very good thiDg in its way, and m a y , possibly, be productive cfsom e ben efit to society; but there is another crime that presents itself to woman, and which appeals more strongly to her sympathies and prayers than all the beer swilling and liquor guzzling in the world. We allude to what is known as the “ social evil,” an evil that has damned more souls than there are drops to be found in the oceans of alcoholic stimulants which have been manufactured since the days when our Savior turned water to wine. Here lies woman’s mission among her own sex; among those scorned and despised, while at the same time men as guilty, or guiltier their very paramours—are receiv ed in society, courted and caressed, and admitted even into our family circles, where they are honored as it they were pure and undeiiled. If He who, in the purity of His heart, said “ Go and sin no more,” could find words of forgiveness, how much more should we vile creatures for give and forget a fallen woman’s shame. Now then if women desire to engage in a truly noble work let them, throughout the length and breadth of the land, take up the cause of their fallen sisters and be gin the reformation by ostracising every young man, or even old one, who is known to frequent the house of the scarlet woman. Let them also seek out the fallen sisters, pray with them; encourage them with good ad vice; seek out for them employment whereby they may obtain an honest livelihood, and then indeed will our female reforms shine out lovelier far, as true women should, than they do while congregated in praying and psaxtn singing bands around the doors of low groggeries, kneeling in filth and slush, .and accomplish noth- ing, but adding fuel to the fires of fa naticism. Let these praying bands, therefore, begin their"work of mod ern reform in this way and they will have the earnest sympathy and sup port of society throughout the land.” Summons.
