It is with pleasure that we state that the above extract contains and expresses tbe sentiments of nearly all tbe best and truest men of the Republican party, in Eastern Ore gon. The indorsement of Hippie— Mitchell by the Holliday Republican Convention, at Albany, is more than they can or will stand, and to Bhow their disapprobation, of tbe action of that Convention, they will go to the polls on Monday October 13th, aud cast their votes for Col. Nesmith, (the Democratic Candidate, and tbe friend of the people. Eastern Ore gon will give Col. Nesmith from twelve hundred to fifteen hundred majority. The people know and re spect him, aud are willing to give their interests into liis bauds as their Congressman, knowing and believ ing that they will be faithfully at tended to, and that monopolies can not control him. K T IR IT O F T H E 1*11 LAS. In addition to extracts that we have already given in the D e m o c r a t we below give a few more extracts from other papers, showing how the nomination of Col. Nesmith is re ceived as the candidate for Con gress: From the Mercury. We are thoroughly satisfied that the Republicans can put no caudi- date in tbe field who can come with in a thousand votes of Nesmith.— Believing this, we lire, of course, more than gratified at this nomina tion. The truth is, James W. Nes mith is one of the very ablest men of Oregon, of any party. He has a mind of unusual strength and vigor, to which he has added a most hand some culture, all of which is aided by a wide and varied experience in public life, both as a civilian and a military man. Who is there, at this juncture, we ask, who is better qual ified to serve tbe interests of Oregon as a State than James W. Nesmith? Certainly the Republicans can put in nomination no man who, in this respect, is the equal of Nesmith.— They have uo such man; he does not live in Oregon. The people of alj parties in the !8tate know this; and they will show that they appreciate so important a fact at the polls on the 13tli of October next. We think the Convention acted wisely in mak ing this choice, and we congratulate that body on the result. The people will ratify their work. N. B.— All debts due tbis office are'payabte in Coin, unless otherwise expressly agreed. in our judgment, just its certain as that the election comes off on that day. From the Plaindealer. Southern Oregon may ho depend* ed upon as sure to give him a heavy vote, as the Democrucy of this sec tion are fully satisfied with the nom ination, and if the balance of the State will only do as well, and there is every indication it will, Hou. J. W. Nesmith’s election is assured, and by the largest majority ever given any candidate in the State. From the W alla W alla Statesman. The people of Eastern Oregon have reason to be gratified with the ao- tion of the Democratic Convention in nominating J. IK Nesmith to rep resent the State in Congress. In early days it was the constant prac tice to ignore tiie country east of the mountains, and it was not until Mr. Nesmith took his seat in the Senate that we were able to obtain a recog nition of our just claims. The early pioneers will recollect that lor years we were left w ithout any mad facili ties whatever, uud the w riter remem bers on one occasion when this fact was brought to the attention of the then representative in Congress, the reply came back quick and sharp, that “ the country was inhabited principally by horse thieves and gamblers, aud they were a class wbo had little occasion to use the mails." As late ns 1 8 5 9 and 1 8 0 0 , the mails for the Dalles were brought through by the O. S. N. Compuuy free of charge, and from that point wore distributed by special messengers, the whole country being destitute of a single mail carrier. Thus matters remained down to the time Mr. N ch - mith took his seat in »the Senutc, when he at once exerted himself to have the country provided with suit able mail facilities. In this, as in many other matters, he was an early and constunt friend of Eastern Ore gon, and it will uow bo for the peo ple to show that they appreciate these favors. HON. J . W . N E S M IT H . By reference to notices in other columns, of this weekls paper, it will bo seen that the Hon. J. W. N e s m i t h will address the citizens of Baser County, at Baker City, on next Fri day, at 2 o’clock, P. M., on tbe p o litical issues of the day. Let oor citizens give one day and go and hear this talented old Pioneer dia- cuss the political questions which are now agitating the public miud.— He is a clear, lncid and pleasant speaker, and we are well satisfied that our citizens, of all parties, will be well pleased with the roan aud bis speech. He is a plain, candid man, aud will tell our people what From the Albany Democrat. he will try to do to advance their Col. Nesmith is unquestionably one of tho ablest men in Oregon, as interests. J.
