Sterns & H yde A tty ’s for A d m ’ r. W h y D o n ’ t Y ou R e s p o n d ?— Old Judge W .,i n the Old Dom inion, is a character. H e was a lawyer, leg is lator, judge, and a leading politician among old time W h ig s of blessed m em ory; but, alas, like many of his confreres, where the woodbine twin- eth, he has gone. Notwithstanding the loss of property and the too free use of apple jack, he maintained the dignity of ex-judge, dressed neatly, carried a gold headed cane, and when he had taken more than his usual a l lowance of his favorite beverage he was very pious. A t such times he always attended church, and stand- ing near the stand as erectly as cir cumstances would admit and respon ding fervently, On one occasion a Baptist brother was holding forth with energy and unction on the evils of the times, and in one of h isV ig h ts, exclaim ed: “ Show me a drunkard!” The Judge rose to his feet, and un steadily balacing him self on his cane, said solem nly: “ Here I am sir; here I a m !” The elder, though a good deal nonplussed by the unexpected response, managed to go on with liis discourse* and warming up to his work, again called out: “ Show me a hypocrite! Show me a hypocrite!” Judge W . rose and reached forward aci’oss a seat which intervened, touch ed Deacon D . on the shoulder with his cane, said: “ Deacon D . why don’t you respond, sir; why don’t you re spond? I did when he called m e !” A y e r ’s 1873 . DR. W- Iv.
