Senator Carter will probably 'ct.lt-i3 again . Jonathan Bourne's eastern biography is an interesting one. Mr Cleveland's lorin policy as a whole has been somewhat' weak. One senator wants a tU biologist. Ue is as badly needed as 67 clerks ate. Mr Mitchell's bump of hope is a big far one, and yet though near he seems from election. The new senator from Illinois has al ways been called Billy Mason ; bnt now he has dropped the 'Billy." A capital city paper boasts of thriving. Certainly a Salem paper ought to thrive now in these days of golden senatorial eggs. The prospect of no meeting of the leg islature increases and it seems as if nothing will be done, all because of the senatorial election. President Cleveland endorses the ap pointment of Gage. He certainly oaght to for Gage voted for him three times, and his financial policy is ditto. Every day the statement is made that the forty six is positively to be made up, but each time it fail to materalise. No wonder Mr Carter declares that there are some liars around. The Statesman keeps saying the Bourne-Simon house i going to pieces, and the Oregonlaa that the Benson bouse is. They have to becking about something. The senate is just about at the end of its rope, and as it refuses to consider 3ills on their th'rd reading until the nonse is legally organised there is little left to do. it is in order tor some one to introduce a bill giving Senator Milch a right of way for a railroad to Mare. All of the member of Mr Harrison's cabinet will wear some kind of a beard. Mr Banna has side burns ody, Mr Long only a' mustache, Mr McKenney has no mustarbe but plenty of whiekeis, Mr Alger has whiskers at the chin, a ad Sherman, Uage and Wilson have fall beards. The maa at the head is as everybody knows, smooth shaven. If there isaoythiug io signs, tbe ruffled surface of the sea of politics last night could indicate ttiat'a United Stasee sen ator is to be elected at today's joint con vention. Tbe houre of Simon and Bourne is going to pieces very rapidly oow and total collapse is imminent at any moment. Statesman - On the whole, the prospect of Mitch ell's election tomorrow is noi a particle better than it has been at any time in the past. Oregonisn. The famine in Indi is of a terrible character. A correspondent visited tbe poorhouses at BiLupur and Katani. The inmates were found to be tn a de plorable condition. T e buildings were overcrowded and medical attendance was lacking. A man outside of one of Cfcem was deed and another was dying. A girl of 5 years of age weighed only 10 pound, and sereral adults were under SO pounds in weight. The skin in sll esses was drawn over the faces, abowing the outlines of tbe skulls and tbe limbs ini joints had the appearance of those of articulated skeletons. This place is the worst of any part of India. It is es ti mated that the present famine is the trreatest of the century, and will greatly surpass that of 1S7C, both in area and seventy. Tbe famine belt extends to Rawalpindi and Ballary, and is 1300 miles long and 400 miles wide. This is apart from trie scattered districts. Senator CarterV Sreech. "Mr President : I came to tbis legit lature an unpledged man I bad never by written or spoken word involved my self In a promise to vote for any man for senator. "I was met with a carriage at lbs depot when I came to attend this ses sion and they escorted me to Mr Mitch ell's headquarters. There I was pre sented with a paper to sign and I told them I never signed any political pa-1 pert. I was shown a paper with 37 name on, agreeing to go into caucus. I said: Yon have enough witbont me. Senator Mitchell said he especially wanted me and I learned, afterwards he told tbem ail tbe same story. 1 declined although 1 bad a very pleasant interview with tbe gentleman. In fact I bad several very pleasant in terview. He was the only candidate tor senator. Toe opposition brought es no man to vote for- I voluntarily went to Mr Mitchell tbe Thursday ot the cau cus and told him I would go into caucus and vote for him and I did so.. But I bad never told a living soul I wocld do so until I went and told him. I also toid him I would never again sup port a man as long as I supported Dolph two years sgo. I stayed with Mr Mitch ell twenty days and then I told him he had better withdraw and iet us form a combination on tome new man. Senator Mitchell and O N Denny csme to my room last night and told me that 45 members of this legislature would come here today and vote for bim for United Htat.es senator if I would come and make tbe 4Ubli man and sustain him in this trying hour of bis life. He told me all now depended on me. If I re fused to be the 41th man I would be the csuse of continuing this deadlock and would disappoint all tha peop'e of this state who wanted this legis'ature or ganized and this thing to go ahead. I turned to Judge Denny and asked him as my old lifelong friend to tell me if this was the truth of the matter. He raised his band and said before God it was the truth nnd now lam here as the 40th man and your roll call shows only 33 and somebody has lied to me. E ther Senator Mitchell has lied or tbe senators have lied to him because he named over the men who were to be here and where are they 7 He misrepresented to me or senators misrepresented to him. There is a lie out somewhere and I want to know where it is. Some of tbe men he told me last night would stand up here today and vote for htm, tell me they never told bim any such thing. Now who I. as lied in this matter? Where are these men they said were to be here and elect him senator today 7 I am here as 1 agreed to be but I have passed through an awful ordeal in try ing to find out the truth of this matter There la a lie out somewhere, but I have come here and redeemed my promise and cleared my conscience and my head will rest on a soft pillow when 1 return Tbenew Pennsylvania TJ S senator, Ttn'iRA I'onrnaA. is a Harvard man. liar yard cr Ilege has yelled Itself tioaree. If Corbett and r'ltxsimmous had to pay for the free advertising they get they wouldn't have anything left alter the fight. It is a crime to intentionally pas" bad bills. The present legislature will pro bably not have an opportunity tj com mit such a crime. The stockholders of the defunct Ellens burg bank have been assessed $100 a share.which they will have to pay.bring the full value of the stock. $15,000,000 of Cuban republic bonds have been sold in the U. 6. secretly. That indicates a confidence in the suc cess of the Cuban insurgent that is very emphatic. A colli -se in a rail trust reduced the price of rails to $17, a clean cut of $8 in a week. Now let the oil, sugar and a few other big trusts collapse and we will get things for what they are worth . Wm. J. Btyan's book ends with these lines written by Ella Wheeler Wilcox: Still Truth proclaims this motto, In letters of living light. No qnestion is ever settled, Until It is settled right. Don't belittle your competitor in your advertisements. This looks very like a p'.ain case of "sour grapes" to outsiders. Just go ahead and state in plain En glish what yoa have, and leave the rest to the public, whose eve is not bait as easily blinded a is imagined, even though some da follow the wether bell sheep. Leave competitors alone except where yoa can profit by suggestions pot forth by them Shoe and Leather Facta- II r Bayard has become considerably of an Eoghshman himself on tbe other side of the big paddle, and it is intimated even wears one glass- The Dsmocsat is in favor of a minister who will always be a red hot American from the jumpoff, and not cavil to every English custom and whim. Mr Bayard's reputation would have been better had he remained at home. A Nebraska editor, whose paper was lata one week, explains tbe delay in this lucid manner: "Oar paper is two dsys late this week owing to an accident to oar press. We started to ran off tbe edition on Wednesday night as usual, one of tbe gay rope, gave way, allowing the forward gUderfiau tt fall and break as it struck the flanker dropper. This of coarse, as anyone that knows anything about a press will readily understand, left tbe gang plank with only tbe flip flap to support it, which also dropped and broke off tbe wrapper coke. This loosened the fluking betweeo tbe ramrod and the nbber-enatcher, which 'o canted trouble- The report tbat th trouble was caoeed by over tndalgeoc in intoxicating stimstaat by ouree.f is a tissue of falsehoods, the poeled appear arce of oar right eye bcuig caused by oar (oiog into th haich war of the pre in oar anxiety to start it, and palling the coupling pin after the slapbang was broken, which caused tbe dingus to riee up and welt as in the optic. Fourth Estate. Advertising Suggestions Hopeful results rarely corns from hope less advertising. There should be point (o the ad tbat sells lead pencils. The ad offering silverware should pos sess sterling qualities. There should be no falling off in a bi cycle firm's advertising. Ths ad of the piano dealer should be written in tbs right asy. Readers will bank on the well written ad of a savings institution. When tbe advertiser is sure of his ground, hs should build upon it. The ad offering cosmetics cm be set up with smooth-faced type. It is not necessary to fill an ad with wind, but the subject should be well aired. Too many sweeping assertions in the ad will drive away tbe "duet" of readers. Clothing advertisements should fit the clas of people for whom they are In tended.
