Gentlemen, eome to your senses, says the Salem Statesman. Wonder who is referred to. There are so many gentle men hanging around Salem, who have been out of their senses it is difficult to figure out the proposition. Years hence men will be figuring out who is to blame for the present legisla tive fiasco. It will take an expert to do any figuring in the matter without plac ing J. H. The house was really uurprised, the loud applause broke forth, so unexpscted that the clerk, used oolf to t ie senate's stern solemnity, recoiled, blushing snd confused, to the corridor. "Well," ejaculated Mr aioouy, oi a assachusetts, ''that's the first time I ever beard what '. : aeoat Airs. Slausou's Litter. Washington, D. C. Feb. 11, 1897 (Special). Once every year it has been the custom of Mrs Cleveland, while she hag been the mistress of the White House, to give a iadie reception, invi tations to which are issued only to ladies in the immediate circle of her acquaint ance, and in some esses to a tew cf their friends. Every lady In Washington, who at any time has bad the pleasure of meeting Mrs Cleveland, eagerly hopes for one of these invitations, and the disap pointment is correspondingly great in case it is not received. The reception riven, a few days ago being in the nature of a farewell, was tinged with many regrets- on that ac count, but for the same reason, invita tions to it were more than ever eagerly desired. About five hundred invitations were sent out, and it is safe to say that not a single lady invited failed to come It was strictly a ladies' reception, no gentlemen except Col John M Wilson, the government officer who at that time had charge of all tbe government build ings in this city, but who has tinea been made Chief of Engineers ot the army, and two or three regular White House ushers, being present. The entire lower floor of tbe Executive mansion was open to the visitors, in cluding the magnificent conservatory with its stately palms and costly orchids from the tropical countries of South America. At no other place or time is It possible to see such a gathering ot ladies of cult ure, grace and beauty, from all parts of the United States as at one of tbess pri vate receptions of tbecharin'.og mistress of the White House. Those receptions in which the president participates, four each season, cannot compare with this, for so many invitations must ot necessi ty be issued to those that the parlors of the White House are always over crowd ed, and those who do not come early are not unfrequently left outside tbe doors. At -Mrs Cleveland's reception were all the ladies of the cabinet, of (he court circles, of the diplomatic corns, and many of the wives and daughters of the oet prominent senators and members of congress, and of the officers of the array and navy, as well aa a large num ber prominent in resident social circles MrsCIflve!and was assisted in receiv ing by a score or more of the most beau tiful young ladies of Washington society, among them being Miss Stevenson, tbe vice-presssent's daughter. Miss Sartoris the daughter of Nellie Grant, Miss Ful ler, tbe daughter ot tbe Csief Justice, Miss Wilson, the daughter of the Post master General, Miss Harrison, the daughter of the Attorney General, Miss Nilee, the daughter of the General of the army, and the Misses Irene and Louise Sheridan, daughters of the late General Sheridan. For ita unostentatious magnificence, and yet with all a certain modest sim plicity, this farewell receptioa by Mrs Cleveland to the ladies of Washington, was one long to be remembered. Tbe invitations were out a week or more be fore tbe event, during which time it was tbe principal topic of the social world . When the day arrived, and it was a per fect daj, tbe drive to the White House waa lined with beautifully equipped turnouts, the tine of coaches and car riages extending far along Pennsylvania Avenue- As one carriage waa relieved of ita fair occupants, others were added to ths seemingly continuous line, thus making a conttant stream of visitors to pay their respects to ths Lady of the White House. With hundreds of eyes awaiting her approach, Mrs. Cleveland decended tbe stairway from ber private apartments, and escorted by Colonel Wilson, passed tnroagb the long eo:ndor Into tbe east room, where she welcomed ber guests in her graceful and charming manner. Each was greeted in person by name and for each there were a few words and a most pleasant smile, fcvery lady pres ent could tell you what; Mrs. Cleveland wore upon that occasion, and the rich ness and yet striking simplicity of ber costume was the subject of general com ment. Her gown was of silver gray cloth, and skirt perfectly plain and bang ing in clinging folds, a little bolero jack et, trimmed with silver passementerie, and some rare old lace bands of sable. Fastened in ber girdle was a cluster Of fragrant violets . Her hair was parted ia the middle and caught gracefully back in a low knot. Side combo, un adorned with silver or gold, added to tbe simplicity ot the effect. Mrs. Cleveland's greeting of ber friends is worthy of especial mention . She takes one by tbe hand with abearty whole-souled grasp, and one feels that tbe pleasure of meeting her is cot all one sided. Mrs.' Cleveland's facia! con trol, too, is a matter of wonder. Each guest is greeted with a smile, and each time ber countenance passes into a stale of perfect repose, and tbe next guest Is met with a smile that is one of recog nition and of welcome- , It is a social art te make every lady feel that she bas bad a personal cbat with the hostess, and yet to keep tbe way clear so that five hundred may go away with tbe same feeling in the short spacj of two hours rbis Mrs. Cieveiand dies perfectly. As many as could find standing aoom in the spacious east parlor remained there during the entire time of the reception fascinated by the loveliojss and grace of their hostess. Mrs. Cleveland's fair assistants, many of whom were debatan tes of tbe season, were grouped in the other parlors, and held little levees for their especial friends. Mas. Cleveland's BKCKprion. The floral decorations throughout tbe various parlors of tLe mansion, were exqaisite. The blue room was banked with palms, sUnding as high as the ceil ing. The red room was adorned with pots of magnificant roses. Tbe state dining room was the center of attraction for here' refreshments were served. The long table was artistically arranged, with large vases of pink and Marechal Neil rosea, alternating down the center, with the delicate appoint ments corresponding with the two colors. Salads, ices and ths usual tea dainties were served. Almonds, chocolates and delicate cakes were in small dishes made to represent the American Aug. The silver was of a perfectly plain pattern. Tbe fine cob web like napkins were all marked with a handsome "U. S." In oce ' corner. The salads, creams and ices were served ia delicate China while tea. ballon, and chocolate were tbe only drinks offered to the guests. Mrs. Cleveland does' not believe in serving wines or punch at receptions, and has bad the courage to set this noble exam ple to the leading society people of Washington. The practice, she sal J, was so common that before young men realized it, they had taken too much liquor and were in no condition to be seen by anyone. Tbe conservator) adjoining the dining room was also thrown open to the ladles and proved to be one ot tbe most de lightful rendeevous of tbe afternoon. An entire book would hardly aufnice to describe tbe many beautiful and rare plants which this place contains, main tained by the government for the com fort and enjoyment of the Chief Magis trate and hi family . One thing as not iciabla in the conservatory as the rars plants themselves, was the number of white house employees keeping close watch upon everyone who entered. Van dalism is so common here that everything is carefully guarded, and receptiensin the past have shown where close watch was not maintained, that not only many beautiful blossoms but oftentimes plants themselves had been carried away by those who have been long taught to feel that it is not stealing to take anything from Uncle Sam. From the conservatory, the ladies passed through the gorgeous grand corrWor, where the Marine band dis coursed fine music, nndnr the leadership of Prof. Fanciulli. The corridor, was festooned with evergrerie, which with the electric lights streaming through tbe stained glass partition made a strikingly beautiful effect. At times the sound of gay childish laughter attracted tbe attention of the guests from the grandeur below. In the hallway above carefully guarded bv their attentive nurses, romped in the highest glee tbe pretty children f President and Mrs. Cleveland. Every nov and. then their happv faces could be seen peering over and through tbe banisters above, looking with innocent wnfimuient npon the eailv dressed throng below. Like three fairies, indeed, they looked, all dressed in white, fair haired Kate, so like her mother, little Esther and pretty baby Marion, whore flaxen haired beauty is very striking Once more the east room was reached, and still Mrs Cleveland stood welcoming her apparently never ending stream of visitors. Still she seemed free from fatigue, and ber last welcome was co less hearty than ber first. The wife of tbe new Chinese Minister was present among tbe other guests. She cannot speaa a word of English and is anacqnainted witti tbe ways ot Ameri cans, bbe sat alone with a look ol won de on ber face, as if trying to make oat what it all meant. One li tie incident illustrate better than anything else tbe kindness of bean that baa endeared Mrs Cleveland to all who have met ber. For some time, a little old woman, bent with age and dressed in a style ot a past generation. stood behind Mrs Cleveland, evidently waiting for an opportunity to speak a few words with ber that might not be heard by others. As a character she was well worth describing. Her face was like that wbicb le:l Bargees weart in I be w .dow Uedott. tier hair was combed down over ber ears : ber little flat bonnet fitted closely to ber head, and and was tied ooder ber chin with rib bons. Her dress wa very plain, wbile aronnd ber aboulders waa a thin white st.aa-1 with fringed edges, tier general appearance would have been more in keeping with a reception given by Dolly Madison. There waa a lull for a moment in the pa-sing of tbe guest, and Mrs Cleve land felt a tap on ber shoulder. Upon looking around she beheld Ibis little old woman. Had she been Viieen V ictoria, she could not have been greeted With more royal grace. Grasping ber by tbe hand, tbe lady of tbe White House bowed deferentially aid listened with apparent ly pleased attention, while tbe old lady whispered rapidly in ber ear. Then she answered pleasantly and kindly and In a moment more tbe little old woman trip ped away with a pleased look upon ber face and a general air that told ot ber perfect happiness. Who she was or where she came from bo one seemed to know, but although an unbidden guest, the courtesy with which she was received, will be spoken of in after years as old ladies now tell stories which they beard in their girlhood of tbe famous recep tions at the beginning of the present centurr.
