Mr. HaDna was annoyed. Mr. Benson's job ia not ore. an enviable Mr. Davis doesn't seem to be the shot out kind. - Poor Havanna, war and small pox at the same time. . The Nicaraugua bill will probibly not pass, we regret to say. A Chicago man was arrested for epit tin on the floor of a street car. Set the red tape midline go ing. An liiinois colony has decided to come to Oregon instead of going to Guatamala, ami right into this beautiful Willamette vaiiev. Let them come. New York City is somewhat degraded. Of course it always has been, but now the newspapers are also degraded, and make the degradation so conspicuous that the color ia heightened. Senator Driver wants to do something so badly for tbe people toe chances are he won't do anything. According to tbe present panorama he is one of tbe mos impracticable men in the senate. The present coagress, notwithstanding the cry for economy promises to be the most extravagant on record. It is doing everything it can to increase the deficit in order to create a demand for a higher .tariff in the interest of trusts and monop olize. The total appropriation will be at least 5530.000.000, or $15,003,000 more than the last extravagant session. 1 correspondent in the New York World says : Ten weeks ago all republi cans were consumed with anxiety lest, - if free silver won, the poor workmgman might have to pay a little more for his butter and eggs in consequence of ex pected higher prices for farmer's pro ducts. Now do yon learn of any of . these same generous hearted republicans walking the floor nights in distress lest tbe proposed increased tariff upon wool should cause every dear workingman in 'the land to pay a deal more for each woolen garment which be purchases? "0, consistency, thon art a jewel." Here are eome big facts in big figures, worth cogitating over: Thn.jixty five clearing house banks of New York alone now have on deposit the enormous earn of $54S,03S,2tiO. Their surplus reserve- over and above the 25 per cent of liabil ities which they are required to keep in their vaults is no less than $43,997,430. They are ready and anxious to lend all this money at 1?X per cent per annum, on good security. There is about $45, uuyuoo in tneir bands wnich they con not lead at even this low rate, while about $500,000,000 or about twice tbe total outstanding greenback currency of the conntrr is lent at less than 2 per cent . At the tame time delinquent tax payers in Kansas are tiring to borrow money m ew lork at 12 per cent in terest. John D. Rockefeller. He saved money from the time be first began to earn it. In two yeara he bad pnt away 1300. Then be and M B Clark went into tbe commission business in St Ionis, and in eight years had saved $5,000. With this capital he started a little oii refinery, out of whbh grew tbe btand ard Oil Company and bis vast wealth. . In a short time the Rockefellers were n-ar unto failure, and were rescued by Henry M F.'aglir'a father-in-law, M V Harkness. Once eafely established, the Rocke fellers staited out to acquire the plants of their rirale. Some were acquired by purchase, othei s by ether means. Snow suits the boys, but makes the old men fidgety. There will be no complaint if this cold snap is held up. A man has to Lump himself to keep up with tbe procession nowadavg. We cannot have to good schools. Tuey are to be the salvation of our country. That letter of Senator Mitchell to Sec retary Kincaid makes interesting read ing v Senator Vest ia a whole suit in Mis soon, tie was re-elected with a sweep. If Sylvester Pennoyer were Governor there would be some fun at Salem these days. Prof MoElroy is in Salem looking after the interests of the State University That's very timely. India ia being infested by a death deal ing plague. It may be oar gain financi ally, but it is to be sincerely regretted. ' Now an exchange says only the bu preme court has any right to pass upon the legality of the house orgtmxjition. A Californian who heard that be had come into poseesion of $30,000 went in sane. A great many people would be glad to try the experiment. The Statesman has a picture of Joe Simon working the wires. Sure enough, bat not exactly as pictured. ' He is doing the work effectively riaht in the senate. Men who follow the Eog'.ish style should consider the fact that a dog's pants are never tamed up at the bottom. This brilliant idea is secured plagians- tically. There is nothing like being celebrated, the following is the whole of a three line item in the Jacksonville, Florida, Times "Mayor Pennover gives half bis salary to the poor. Unfortunately his example will not be generally followed." The only satisfaction to the Dm oca at man in tbe election of Tom Piatt aa U S Senator for New York atate ia the fact that when a boy be heard him orate once. It was on a "platform in the open air, and Piatt was coosiderabls of a talk er even in thoee days- With the Senate and Joe Simon, Sec retary Kincaid and tbe opinion of Gov eraor Lord against it tbe ramp boose presided over by Mr Benson might a well adjourn. Tbe matter has resolved itself into a Mitchell fight and the Indi cations are that there will be no legal vote for TJ S Senator at thia session. Mr Mitchell baa his match in men like Joe Simon and Jonathan Bourne. - The greatest danger to the U S is gov ernment by aristocracy. The greed and avarice of the Roman senate resulted in the overthrow of Rome, and it the Doited States doesn't look ont onr own aristocratic body of millionaire senators will jeopardise the interest of oar gov ernment. Tbey are working only for thoee things that go to build np their own interests, in tracts and monopolies, and it is time to call a halt. As there is no hope of bavins the election of senator taken from atate legislatures, because the measure would have to pass that selfish body, something else should be done to protect tbe masses from I be rapidly increasing centralization of wealth .in the bands of a few. Failure to bold a seeaion of the legisla ture and to pass the customary appro priation bill wonld nut, after a'l, be an irremediable calamity. Tbe state of Or egon once met and overcame the same emergency. It was in 1868, when a number of members of tbe boose resign ed, breaking a quorum, and tbe legisla ture waa obliged to adjourn without passing tbe appropriation bill. Tbe atate government went on just tbe same, collecting tbe customary taxes, and in directly meeting its obligations. Hops have been contracted for as high aa 11 cents, and the price of wheat prom iaes to be good. These things offer some encouragement to the farmer. The Benson men don't know where they stand very well. One moment they art declaring that there are only 31 members and another that there are 60. A mass of unnecessary printing is done during the session of the legislature, at a big expense. For iutance the print ing of long winded charter bills. Too ranch red tape. It a man gets trusted nowadays it is because he has a pretty good name. No merchant should or can afford to trust a man with a reputation for act paying his debts. The nearer business gets to a cash basis the belter it will be tor tbe people. It transpires that almost none of the alleged local holdups in Salem were true, that the reports were circulated simply to secure the anpoiutment of several specials in the interest ot the Benson house. For wars that are dark and tricka that are vain just go to Balem. Mr Mitchell may depend upon the fact that be will never get a certificate of election from Secretary of State Kincaid unless he is actnallv elected in a legal way. There are rumors of jobs and a senatorial election by a few men claim- ne to be a iotnt session ; but it will not work. There is no question that the Benson house is an illegal one. Tbe prepon derance of opinion ia convincing Tbe Democrat would l:ke to teethe matter "fixed np" in sjjine manner and the house get to work with a legal quo rum, but the present proceeding ot tbe Benson faction ia certainly every puerile one. Some people wonld bardly give' tbe farmer a chance. We want better roads and a better system, bnt it should be done so aa to be of the least hardship to the farmer. If an effective system can be provided nnder which the farmer can pay in labor it will be so much the bet ter. There ia though certainly some thing lacking in tbe present mode. The Legislature. In the house. Though tbe proceedings of tbe Benson house are undoubtedly illegal and will not stand, we give the substance of Tues day's proceedings. Miiner of Crook, nne of tbe democrat who have helped to make the thirty one arose in his seat this afternoon and said : "Mr Speaker: I bare no been here a week to represent my people and I want to g? to work. I do not consider that this house is organized legally. It seems too much like baby work. I want to know if yon can tell ne bow we are going to organize. If we cannot I do not intend to stay in my seat and fool away any mora time. 1 am getting tired of this.' Mr Misener's remarks were received with perfect silence and 'Mr Benson in tbe chair had not a word to say in reply. In the senate. Tbe day was devoted moetly to second reading and reference of billa. Holt, providing for tbe relocation of county seats Johnson, to amend law providing for certain fees to county officers. Holt, to facilitate collwHon of taxes in certain cases, making iaxca a lien up on property. Johnson, to amend laar relating to sal aries of county judges. Wheat Prospectd. The prospect that the price of Ameri can wheat will continue high ia increas ed by the latest news from Australia and India. According to the report of Uoiled States Consul B. H at Sydney, the Australian crop ie eo short as to reduce the colonies from their position as the sixth wheat-exportir-g country to the eleventh. The total experts will run down this year Irom 12.000,000 bushels to 5,000,000. Tn India, a-ording to the last reports, the rain bti'l holds off and tbe chance that a fair percentage ot home consumption will hi mwi by the yield is thought to be at an wd, - It is an ill wind tiiat blows nobody any good, and the farmera of the United Slates will be called upon to supply a large share, not only of Ue Australian and India deficiencies, 0 :t ot the ahort age of Europe caused h those deficien cies. Thia would serve to put the prlo , for 1897 aa high as it w . in ibe October flurry, and perhnna h,, ,er. At any rate, American whata growing, unless very much overdone or uiAde subject to bad conditions, ot which there is no likelihood, .promises to oe the most profitable feature of our staple husband ry daring tbe present year. Tradesman MISFITS. The rumD house did not even dare in- vite the Governor to read his message to them, and it ia liable to become yejlow. Pendleton must have a dniev lot of councilman. The city recorder embex- wed about $3000 in licence money in a little over a year before they found it out. A Salem paper complains of a boycott in Portland. That's nothing. The Dkmocbat is boycotted in London, and there isn't a single copy taken there. The contest got bo warm in Polk coun ty that the West Side offered to print 10,000 letter heads tor the county for 1 ut, out me itemixer cave iu lor the privilege and not the iob. Even editors can make fools of themselves. The ten special nolicnmm nwnrn in In do work at the canitol in keeninir the Davis men back will have a big time getting their pay. As they were Bworn iu s special city policemen Salem ia Iia bie to have a bill to liquidate. Tne opposition received a telecram yesterday afternoon from Senator Mor gan sustaining their position on the highest authorities known at Washine ton, that without a quorum of forty no ousinesb wnatevercan be transacted. The following appears in the funnv column of the Salem Statesman : "Now it is eald the Oregon Central ia to be pushed on over the Cascades and to the Deschutes daring the present year. Then thia road and the one fnirn Goble through Astoria to Seaside will surely meet at Salem before the last if 1898.' It ia asserted in tbe Examiner that Edith Gilliam, a blind girl at Palouse, Wash., reads readily through her finger tips common writing, telle the time, de scribee photographs. She aUo described things for milea around, etc. The whole reads in rather of a sensational way, and being skeptical as to tbe truth of the Ex aminers full page account of the affair, the DxxocaAT has wtitten to a triend at f alouse to learn tbe truth ot tbe matter It is reported thia time with evidence ot good faith that the Oregon Central A iaaiern win be extended in the spring, If so, it will be built to the Deechutea river before the year is oat. It is a well known fact that Mr. Hammond's road will never pay until the line ran some where that somebody want to go. It financial condition cannot be materially improvea nnui tne eastern terminus is built to a more ptosperous eectiou of the country- At present tbe terminus is a! some unknown place in the eastern part ot Linn county. To make it a paying property Messrs. Bonner A Uamtncnd will iave to spend a fortune to set the road through tbe Cascade mountains. Statesman. San Francisco' Chinatown is wild with excitement. Little Pete, bead ot tbe Sam Yap, who wore a $700 diamond ring, carried an $S00 watch and a $600 naff box, baa been foully m ordered by two See Ynp highbinders, and more bloody work is feared. Again tie Man about Town' big cousin. Sergeant Price, ia called out. The Examiner says : "The chief notified Captain tVittman to send six adailional men into Chinatown, and instruct tbem to keep a sharp lookout for highbinder. Tbe C-ptatn did as in structed, and also detailed Sergeant Wil liam Price, whom tbe highbinders fear as much aa the displeasure of the Joes, and Sergeant Jeeee Cook to handle the men," the Chronicle aays,"with orders to make splinters and highbinders fly," which will be done.
