Paguc'a U. S. Crop Report.
Harvesting and threshing continue.
The weather has been favorable for this
work, as well as for plowing for fall-sown
grain. Plowing is being pushed with
vigor, and more than usual will be done.
The threshing returns show the lull ef
fects of the untavorable year. Farms
that have always had from 35 t i AO
bushels of fall-sown wheat per acre,
have, this year, from 20 to 150 bushels.
Early spring sown grain is poorer, yield
ing only from 10 to 18 bushels per acre.
The potato cron was iniureitbv the ilrv
July weather, but it has improved since
me rain. v;orn is unusually good, tjorn
is not grown extensively in Oregon, for
tho cool nights are injurious to lis
growth and development; this year,
however, the heat of July, which was
unusual, proved very beneficial to the
corn, and the rains then following gave
tt unusual arowtli. The fruit crop be
ing a partial failure, and the grain crop
as well, causes some to report the con
dition, really worse than what they are.
The climatic conditions of May and fore
part of June were phenomenal, and llo
result is a phenomena in the grain and
fruit; that is, a shortage, conditions new
to Oregon.

I won.d like lo call the attention of tho
officers of the law, of loth Marion and
Linn Co , to tho following facts, there are
at prent sewn saloons run openly with
out either having the required license to
carry on the faloon busineRt. Following
are the places: One at Lyon, two at
Gates, ode n Mill City, two in Detroit
and one this side of Quartzville. How
seven aloons can be run in both if srion
and Linn Co., without the required state
license and right under the noses of our
otticers of the law is ooai-thing which I
can't comprehend. As I am a friend of
law and order and knowing there is a
Slate law to stop all that kind of busi
ness. 1 think it is a disgrace to our olli
cers to allow that kind if business to tw
carried on without the. required state !i
lense. I state theso facts to lhe neonte
of both Marion and Linn Co. so as to
show theni that saloons can le ran
without license in both Marion and l.inn

CorvaUis for 27 years, purchased a re
volver at Hodes' gungtore Saturday af
ternoon, and deliberately walked out on
the sidewalk and shot himself in tbe
right temple, from the effects of which
he died two hours later. He had been
employed for some as engineer at Fis

about two weeks ago on account of sick
ness. No cause is assigned for his act.
The deceased was a native of Wales, but
came to America early in life, and when
the war broke out, er.liited in the Union

A man in the city this forenoon saw
IV illiams commit the act. He was just
across the street. It was done ouietly
and was very tragic, in its effect, and de
cidedly "not to be" in its result. .
