Washington Letter.
From our regular Correspondent.
Washington, Aug. 10th, 1806.
The silver democrats are in some in
stances not claiming as much as some of
their opponents are willing to concede
them. A prominent democratic ex
congressman, who is opposing Bryan,
siya he is certain that more democrats
will vote for Bryan this year than voted
for Cleveland in 1S92, yet he claims to
believe that Bryan will be defeated.
Every student of election figures knows
that it was the falling off in the republi
can votes, and not the increase in the
democratic votes, that elected Cleveland
the last time, but all the same, if Bryan
gets as many democratic votes as Cleve
land sat. in addition to the republican
and pooulist votes he will get, his elec
tion will be certain.
Senator Jones thus disposes of the
early campaign liar's effort to show that
hard feeling existed between himself and
Gov Altgeld, as the result of an exchange
ot communications : "I have not nad a
"word of telegraphic or mail correspond
ence with Uov Altgeld, since the Chicago
convention. I had never met the Gov
until we came together on the silver
committee at Chicago, and I am frank
to say that my relations with him were
not only extremely pleasant, but they
gave me the opportunity of discovering
that he was a man of fine judgment,
humane feelings, and much worth.
. Wnen we parted after the convention, I
' had every teason to thins: that the fa
vorable impression that be made upon
me was reciprocated. The story is simp-1
ly a campaign fabrication." ,
Virginia is said to bs more enthusias
tic for Bryan and Sewall than it has
' been for a national ticket for a long tiioe.
Mr Flood, of Appomattox, who will be
elected to the next house in place of
Representative Turner, says of the situ-
. ation and prospects in the state: "We
' will carry the Old Dominion for Bryan
by 40,000 majority. There never was a
f candidate or platform more to the liking
of the people. In my district the en
thusiasm among democrats grows daily
in intensity, and I thnk that the voters
:ti i l it ) . vr . u Ti .
win ureaa ait icjurui iu i uvemver. u ig
pretty certain that Virginia will send a
solid democratic delegation to the next
congress, and every man of them will be
for free silver." Senator Martin takes
the same view of the Virginia octlook
and said of the country at latge: "1
think it is reasonable to conclude that
the great, papular wave in favor of the
democratic nominees will not eahside.
Tuere are no causes in sight to create a
reaction."
Senator Mai tin ic one of the, democrats
who hopes that the call of the voting
gild democrats for a Vuional Conven
tion to meet at Indianapolis, Sept 2, will
icsuji in me noni-.nai.ion oi a goia demo
cratic ticket, not because he wishes to
support it bnt because he believes that it
would be of great benefit to Bryan by
catching votes that would otherwise be
cast for AlcKinley, woue it. would not
take a single vote away from Bryan.
The average democrat echoes the
words of Senator Faulkner, who, when
' .'- he was told that a minor official in one
of the government departments bad
bolied Bryan and Sewall, quietly said :
"That is right; bat did he resign the
office which be owes to the democratic
-party before bolting the regular demo
cratic ticket?' It does seem a little
queer that some men should be willing
to go on d rasing a democratic salary
after having bolted the nominees of the
democratic party.
Those Mexican Prices.
TbeOregonian for several days has
been publishing a Mexican table of
prices with a comparative table of TJ. S.
prices. The Portland Tribune thus re
fers to it:
The gold people seem to hae lost their
head entirely. In seeking to prove their
side they prove too much, and thus lose
the case. Now, think of those benighted
Mexicans paying $35 for three pieces of
stained pine furniture, which sell in this
country for 83, when they could import
them, pay freight and 100 per ctnt tariff,
and get them for at most $15. See how

A fair minded republican editr tells
the following: The Bryans never went
into society in Washington, and the
never entertained. Mr. Bryan was never
known to appear in evening dregs during
her Washington life, and it is said she
never possessed a low cut gown or a
dress with silk linings while her husband
never owned a dress suit. Mrs. Bryan
is not handsome, but she has a striking
ly intelligent and strong face, with large,
expressive brown eyes and heavy, dark
brown bair, always brushed back from
ber broad forehead. 8he despises shams
of every kind and, above all, ia natural
and unaffected; and it is said that,
should she live in Washington she would
run the affairs of the White bouse ac
cording to ber own ideas, and not ia the
wanner of so called official eoc'ety.
A great deal of confidence is exprefsed
fa the election of both Bryan at.d McKin
ley, and vet one cannot help noticing
that the Bryan tonfidence is one that
comes from the masses, while the Mc
Kinley confidence is one more of the
leaders.

"Wnen is a dollar not a dollar? When

force of the cartoon, if it ever bad any.
The silver men are not proposing to coin
"Mexican dollars," but tboee bearing
the stamp of the United Slates, and fu'd
legal tender ia every part of our broad
domain.
And, incidentally, The national Bi
metallist rises to remark that if those
Mexican dollars, which tbe stupid house
wife is taking to market, were "legal
tender" in tbe United States they would
bay as much as any other dollar, and no
business bouse wocld be going through
tbe ridiculous comedy of selling GO cents'
worth of goods and a Mexican dollar for
an American dollar. The whole per
formance of Chicago business men in
which the Mexican dollar has figured is
an insult to tbe intelligence of the Amer
ican people. A Mexican dollar is not
"money" in the United States. It Is
simtly a piece of bullion. When Will
ongbby & Hill offered a fifty cent necktie
and a Mexican dollar for one American
dollar it was just tbe same as if they had
offered tbe necktie and 53 sent woitb of
copper, or iron, or any other commodity.
The object lesson proves the reverse of
what its promoters intended. It shows
tbe difference between a piece of silver
that is "money" in the United States
and a piece that is not. Bimetallist.
A telegraph operator reasons like this :
"We have the gold standard and have
had it since 1373. Since that year prices
have gone down, and with them wages
of labor, and a general stringency has
been felt by those who are compelled to
woik for tbeir daily bread. If we vote
to uphold the gold standard we vote to
keep the currency contracted aod times
stringent. Now, when we wish to raise
prices by voting for the free and unlim
ited coinage o gold and silver at a ratio
of 16 to 1, and help the debtor classes as
much as we icjiired them in 1873, therf
is a fearful kick. How will wans in
crease in cane we secure free coinage o'
silver? Just in the same way that they
decreased under the gold standard

say now, enhance the value of goli and

there is not one goldbng theorbt extant
who employs labor or deals in gold but

elect Bryan. In studying this question
do not mix tha "trade dollar" with it.
There are so many in Coos county as
well as elaewhere that were cinched with
these dollars at ten per cent dkcouct
that, it makes them tiiu'd, fearful of that
old game of paying workmen 90 Cfo'f for
one dollar bein repeated. Io not be
alarmed, bat investigate and find ont
where those discounters now stand, if
Bryao's success offers them the same
profits on silver, they will be found advo
cating bis election, and vice versa. Per
sonally McKinley is not a gold champion;
but being tbe cut and dried candidate of a
combination of gold bugs on a platform
reeking with tbe stench of a conspiracy
to defeat the will of tbe people.and to gov

of English bankers and their New York
allies, of Wall Street, the best interest in
the proapenty of our whole country will
be promoted by deflating him next No

numbers to the devil, aad it will take

That's constipation. It is such a wonder
fully simple thing that people do not regard
it seriously. They let it run on, let it frrow
worse, become chronic, and show itself all
over the body In fifty ways before they con
sider it important. Constipation causes
nine-tenths of all human ailments. Iu first
symptoms do not seem very serious, but
even they are very disagreeable. A few of
them are sour stomach, flatulence, heart
burn, distress after eating, foul breath,
coated tongue, disiness, palpitation of the
heart, sick and bilious headaches, general
lassitude and debility. When any of these
symptoms show themselves, you should
immediately take Dr. Pierce's Pleasant Pel
