A Very High ConipliuiCK
Dr. J. L. Hill, of this city, hu just re
ceived notice that ho has been honored
by having the degree of Doctor of Phil-j
oaophy conferred npon him by a college
in uuicago mis is me rcsuu 01 a series
of articles written by the doctor which
enlisted the tavorable attention ot the
professora of the college and thev deciiled
the author merited the honor of the
high title which they voluntarily con
ferred. The doctor was taken by sur
prise when a letter came announcing
what had been done by the college.
Without previous notice, about a year
ago the Medico-Legal Aosociution of New
"iork sent Doctor Hill a certificate of
membership with the announcement
that he had been unanimously elected
as a member of t hat seien titic association.
A membership in that association is on
ly obtained by previous merit which has
been espresied by ihe pen or before a
jury, for it is, as the name indicates, the
point in science where medicice and law
blend, and the greatest complications
arise. During Judge S'rahan's life time
he waa the legal representative froaj Or
fgon and since his death the honor has
passed to Gov. Lord. The Dkmockat
mentioned a lew weeks ago that Dr. Hill
had received cotice of hia election U a
professorship in the medical department
of the Willamette University with the
request that he deiivei one lecture each
week during the term. The late honor
of Ph. D. (Doctor of Philosophy) ia a
title not acquired by nianv. "These
laurels are the legitimate result of a stu
dious life and great enemy, and our citi
zens appreciate the knowledge that it ia
one of their own who has so generously
received what he fairlv merited.

OUR MILL A NO WOOL.
The e liter of the Salem Journal in an
account of hi trip to the Bay j:
I met Mr. J. C. Ashe, manairer of the
Aittany Woolen Mills, lie aauk the -VI-btny
mill would probably run riht
alone. There waa some distress and fin
ancial disturbance, as there wa iu every
presidential year. The Albany mills are
in the hands of a very competent factory
saperintendent, Mr. Patrick Mciiee. In
lsj9 Mr. Ashe went to work aa a carder
It is a two set mill. The Albany mill
was not a great success prior to it pres
ent management, but Mr. Ashe seems to
be a man ot business ability and very
much of a gentleman. He is a practical
man and a gcod buyer of stock. While
in St. Louis a large jobber told me that
Western Oregon wool waa acquiring a
reputation in the eastern market that
would prove a gold mine. It was super
ior to other Pacific coast wool because
the herds had so much more nearly con
tinuous feediug than anywhere r!e in
our coontry. As the country became set
tled up our pasture would improve. Our
sheep did nut go from good pasture to
starvation, as in Nevada. Idaho. Mon
tana, and New Mexico. The result was.
Wesurn Cregon wool had a contmuou
even fibre without any "kink, in iu
There was no weak fpit in the fibre, it
was straight and strong. The rain in
winter were no detriment, as evry time
the slit-ep trot wet it shook itself and
shook lh dirt all out of tha iieere. The
wool of Western Oregon that goe to the
'Frisco market had almost the appear
ance ot clean whed wool. The dork
here do not trail ail day in clouds of dust
and then liedown inadosty filthy corral.

A Cougar Story.
The Corrallis Tunes tell it :
"Pole" and Georpe Avery itft Corral
lis three weeks ago for a rousing old time
in the mountains. Well, they had it.
They returned yeerdav noon and were
beavilv laden with dried meat and stories
of adventure that rival Kippling'a
"Jongie Stories." Tbey banted in the
YacbAlt. Five-mile Creek, and Ten
mile creek coaatries, and at Five-mile
creek they were joined by Jim Wilkin
son, a nephew of oor Beever Creek Jim.
Jim is a good boater, a well as "Pole"
and George, aad tbey had famous (ac
cess. When Georg was asked "what
lack?" he replied "thirteen deer, a bear,
a cougar, and cot a bee-tree." Jim
Wilkinson bad a dog with him to nee in
hunl.n? and he also had a pop alocg that
he was teaching to host. Some one of
the party bad killed a deer and Lai. en it
to camp. Arriving there, the carcass wa
thrown down in Iron to! thejlent near the
place where the pop was chained. Not
one of the parte waa far from camp, and
either George or " Pole." or both of them,
were snooting with a abort distance of
camp, and Jim was bat a few rods away,
when there was a terrible screaming,
howling, snarling and ki-yi- ing to be
heard at tbe spot where tbe pop was
chained. Jim Wilkinson rubed np and
beheld the pop in tbe clutches of the
cougar. As often happens in case of an
emergency, hi gun was empty, and what
was worse, tbe cougar was inside ot the
tent lying on his cartridges and ere long
the r-iip was literally tors to pieces. He
shouted for George to come quickly, and
when the latter reaached tbe scene.
Wilkinson seized his gna and shot the
animal, kitlimr it right in the tent. Jim
was so enraged at the destroyer of his
pup that be erabbe 1 a knife and cat it
into strips, the cougar was a female
and it must have been very hungry for it
never clinched at tbe approacn ol tbe
men. Tbe scalp was saved and will
bring a bounty of two or three dollars.
